Sitiawan KFC crash: 73-year-old woman killed, police detain driver for investigation (VIDEO)
KUALA LUMPUR, May 9 — A 73-year-old woman died and seven others were injured after a Volvo XC90 rammed into a KFC outlet in Sitiawan, Perak, last night.
Manjung district police chief ACP Hasbullah Abd Rahman said the crash occurred at around 9.05pm at the traffic light junction in front of the restaurant along Jalan Sitiawan-Lumut.
The XC90 was driven by a 29-year-old man travelling from Kampung Koh towards Sungai Wangi.
'Upon reaching the traffic light intersection in front of the KFC Sitiawan restaurant, the driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle, veered to the right and crashed into the KFC building.
'The vehicle also struck eight restaurant patrons — comprising seven adults and one child — who were inside the premises at the time,' he said in a statement.
The elderly victim died while receiving treatment at the emergency ward of Hospital Seri Manjung.
The driver suffered minor injuries and has been detained under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

SINGAPORE, June 2 — A man who extorted a 16-year-old girl by falsely claiming he was taking legal action against her after she backed out of a 'sugar daddy' arrangement was sentenced to jail and caning on Monday. Marc Justine Landrio Chandramohan, 27, was handed a jail term of two years, 11 months and 10 weeks, and three strokes of the cane, according to a report published in Channel News Asia today. He will begin serving his sentence on Friday after being granted a few days to settle his debts. The Singaporean had earlier pleaded guilty to seven charges, including communicating with a minor to obtain commercial sex, abetting the distribution of obscene images and videos, extortion, cheating, making obscene films, and abetting unauthorised access to a computer function. Another nine charges — mostly linked to making obscene films — were taken into consideration for sentencing by Principal District Judge Victor Yeo Khee Eng. Three victims were involved in the case, including the girl who was extorted. Two others were filmed by Chandramohan during sex acts. Their identities are protected by a gag order. Judge Yeo noted Chandramohan's 'premeditated and predatory behaviour', saying he preyed on a young and naive victim and continued to pressure her for sex and money even though she owed him 'absolutely nothing'. The victim's relationship with her family was affected, and she reported feeling that her body was 'dirty', becoming sensitive to physical touch and panicking when she saw someone who resembled Chandramohan. Yeo said deterrence was the predominant sentencing consideration, both for the accused and for would-be offenders. He acknowledged Chandramohan's remorse and readiness to face punishment. The court previously heard that Chandramohan began chatting with the victim on Instagram in July 2021, proposing to pay her S$900 (RM2,980) for sexual favours. She initially agreed and sent him four nude or semi-nude photos and a video of herself removing her school uniform at his instruction. Chandramohan transferred S$100 to her on July 24, 2021. The victim later regretted the arrangement, told him she wanted to back out, and blocked him on social media. He then began harassing her over the money, using new Instagram accounts to contact her and threatening legal action. Despite a friend repaying the S$100 on her behalf, Chandramohan continued demanding sexual favours. In early 2022, the girl gave in and performed a sex act. Chandramohan then pretended legal proceedings were still ongoing and demanded S$1,350 — allegedly half of his lawyer's fee. He also suggested resuming the original sexual arrangement. The victim later confided in friends, who warned her he was likely lying. She lodged a police report. In a separate offence in 2023, Chandramohan opened a Standard Chartered bank account and handed control of it to a friend in exchange for S$330. Over S$304,000 flowed through the account. He was fined S$330 over this offence. Extortion carries a sentence of two to seven years in jail and caning. Communicating with a minor to obtain sexual services carries a maximum jail term of two years, a fine, or both.

Singapore man, 27, arrested for breaking into flat in Jurong West to steal CDC vouchers, cash
SINGAPORE, June 2 — A 27-year-old man previously convicted of housebreaking in 2016 has been charged with committing a similar offence at a Jurong West flat on May 31. Muhammad Hizwan Hashim was charged in court on June 2 with housebreaking after allegedly entering a home at Block 966 Jurong West Street 93 around 3.15am, according to a report published in The Straits Times. According to court documents, he is accused of unlocking the living room window grilles to gain access to the unit. He is said to have stolen printed CDC vouchers worth S$193 (RM640), S$65 in cash, and RM168 (about S$50). The police said in a June 1 statement that they were alerted to the case at around 8am on May 31 and arrested Hizwan soon after. A police spokesperson confirmed that the stolen items were recovered from him. Hizwan was previously ordered to undergo reformative training after his 2016 conviction, a programme involving strict discipline, drills, and counselling. His case has been fixed for mention again on June 30. If convicted of housebreaking to commit an offence, he faces up to 10 years in jail, along with possible fines and caning.

Perlis cops intercept 365kg of syabu in RM13m bust, suspect linked to drug network
KANGAR, June 2 — Perlis police seized over 365 kilogrammes (kg) of syabu (methamphetamine) estimated to be worth RM13.14 million and detained a 40-year-old man at Kampung Belat Batu, Beseri near Padang Besar yesterday. Its police chief, Datuk Muhammad Abdul Halim said the drug seizure and arrest, based on information received, were carried out by a police team from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (JSJN), of the Perlis contingent police headquarters (IPK) at 3.30am. He said before the arrest, the suspect was seen alighting from a Proton Waja car and heading towards another car, a Toyota Vios. 'The results of an inspection on the Toyota Vios car found 17 stitched bags containing drugs suspected to be methamphetamine, believed to have originated from Thailand,' he said at a press conference at the Perlis IPK here today. Muhammad said initial investigations found that the suspect is believed to have used a forest area in the Padang Besar district as a transit point before the drugs were sent to the southern part of the country, with the amount of the illicit substance being enough for 3.6 million addicts. He said the initial urine screening of the man found him positive for methamphetamine and he possessed past criminal records related to drug cases. 'The suspect has been remanded for seven days starting June 1 (yesterday) and the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Police are tracking down another suspect who fled to assist in the investigation,' he said. Meanwhile, Muhammad also said that a 30-year-old Thai man was arrested by the police along with the seizure of two packages of compressed ganja (cannabis), weighing two kilogrammes, hidden in a garbage bin in the Taman Singgah Sana area, Padang Besar at 2.15am yesterday. 'The drugs are estimated to be worth RM6,200 and can be used by around 20,000 addicts The suspect was also found to be positive for methamphetamine.
