Baseball: Maki, Sano spark BayStars to 14-1 battering of Swallows
The Japan Series champions recorded season highs in both runs and hits, with 21, as they snapped a four-game skid since the All-Star break against the Central League's bottom side.
Maki's 16th home run of the season, an ice-breaking big fly over left field off top rookie prospect Yuto Nakamura (1-2), was part of a four-run first inning for a BayStars lineup that had been struggling to score early in games.
"I'm glad I could convert the chance when it came my way," said the Samurai Japan slugger, who finished 3-for-4. "We've been giving up the early runs lately, so all I was thinking about was scoring first."
Sano made it 5-0 with his opposite field blast in the second and extended the margin to 11-0 when he led off the eighth with a long shot to right. Tatsuo Ebina followed with a two-run homer as part of his three-RBI outing.
Kentaro Taira (2-2) got the win after striking out seven and scattering four hits over six shutout innings.

Baseball: Munetaka Murakami hits 1st homer of season, Yakult wins 7th straight
YOKOHAMA (Kyodo) -- Munetaka Murakami hit his first home run of the season in his return from a long injury absence Tuesday, helping the Yakult Swallows extend their season-best winning streak to seven games. Murakami's opposite-field blast to left off Katsuki Azuma (10-5) started a three-run second inning in the Swallows' 5-1 victory over the DeNA BayStars at Yokohama Stadium. The 25-year-old slugger was playing in his only second game of the season after an upper body injury kept him sidelined for about three and a half months. Jose Osuna added a solo home run for Yakult in the sixth while Peter Lambert (3-7) threw six innings of one-run ball for the win. Among the day's other games, Hotaka Yamakawa hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the fourth as the SoftBank Hawks rose to the top of the Pacific League standings with a 5-2 win over the Nippon Ham Fighters. The Hawks have won nine and tied one of their last 10 games.

Crochet Shakes off Ohtani's Leadoff Homer and Outpitches Kershaw as Red Sox Top Dodgers 4-2
BOSTON (AP) — Garrett Crochet struck out 10 in six innings, Jarren Duran hit a two-run triple and the Boston Red Sox beat Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-2 on Saturday night. Boston rookie Roman Anthony added an RBI double off Kershaw as the Red Sox won for the third time in eight games since the All-Star break. Boston won 10 in a row heading into the break. Crochet gave up two solo homers in the first. Shohei Ohtani went deep on the third pitch of the game for his 38th of the season, a day after his streak of five straight games with a home run was stopped. One batter later, Teoscar Hernández launched one over the Green Monster. Crochet (12-4) quickly recovered, however, and allowed two runs or fewer for the 18th time in 22 starts this season. Aroldis Chapman got three outs for his 18th save, striking out pinch-hitter and former Red Sox star Mookie Betts to end it. Making his first regular-season start at Fenway Park, Kershaw (4-2) gave up four runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings with two strikeouts. The three-time Cy Young Award winner's only previous start in Boston came when the Red Sox beat the Dodgers in Game 1 of the 2018 World Series on the way to winning the title.
