Egypt grants Russian company petroleum concession in strategic area

Saba Yemen11-02-2025

Cairo - Saba:
Egyptian media revealed, on Monday, that Egypt has agreed to grant a Russian company a petroleum concession in a strategic area, after the latter submitted an offer of more than $20 million.
The Egyptian newspaper "Al Mal" quoted unnamed senior sources as saying in statements that the Egyptian government, represented by the Ministry of Petroleum and the South Valley Holding Company, granted the Russian company "Lukoil" the rights to exploit the "South Valley Al-Sahel" petroleum concession, west of the Gulf of Suez, by direct order.
The mechanism of the direct order differs from the traditional bidding system, which allows companies to submit comprehensive offers to obtain specific concession areas, which are evaluated by the competent authorities, for acceptance or rejection.
According to reports, the Russian company "Lukoil" submitted an offer to the Egyptian government that includes pumping investments worth a minimum of $22.5 million, with its commitment to drill 6 exploratory wells distributed over two periods of research and exploration.
The agreement came after a meeting between the Egyptian Minister of Petroleum, Tarek El Molla, and the Vice President of the Russian company "Lukoil", Ivan Romanovsky.
It is noteworthy that the Russian company "Lukoil" concession areas in Egypt include several sites, including the Maliha area in the Western Desert, where it owns a 24% stake in partnership with the Italian company "Eni", as well as the West Esh El Malaha area and its extensions in partnership with the Egyptian company "Tharwa Petroleum" with a percentage of 50% for each party.

Kremlin: Putin told Trump Russia will respond to "Kyiv" over airport attacks

Moscow – Saba: Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson for the Russian presidency (the Kremlin), confirmed on Thursday that Russian President Vladimir Putin informed his U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump, that Russia intends to respond to Kyiv over the "terrorist" attacks carried out by Ukraine on several Russian airports. When asked by journalists whether Putin had indeed told Trump during their conversation that Russia would retaliate for the attacks on its airports, Peskov replied, "Yes, absolutely," according to Russia's Sputnik news agency. Peskov added, when questioned about whether the tone of the Putin-Trump conversation had shifted from previous talks and whether it was less friendly: "Here, you might be asking more about the emotional undertones. The conversation, I repeat, was constructive, and perhaps it's not logical to focus on its duration. Sometimes, important matters can be addressed in a shorter timeframe—which was the case yesterday." He noted that the discussion between Putin and Trump was "constructive and necessary," adding, "The two presidents indeed discussed many fundamental and important issues." Peskov stated that there are no agreements between Presidents Putin and Trump to arrange a meeting. He further emphasized, "During yesterday's phone call, U.S. President Donald Trump said he had no information about the preparation of this terrorist act by the Kyiv regime. But if we speak broadly about the international assessment, we would naturally prefer to hear at least a strong condemnation of this terrorist act." Peskov confirmed that Russia's response to Ukraine's "terrorist strikes" on Russian airports would be determined by the military in whatever manner it deems appropriate. When asked whether the Kremlin would cut off communications with Ukraine if Kyiv repeated attacks on civilian targets, Peskov told reporters: "As you know, during yesterday's meeting, our Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed the view that, despite everything, working-level communications should continue. The president supported this position." U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he had held a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, noting that the conversation lasted one hour and 15 minutes. On his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote: "Just finished a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The call lasted one hour and fifteen minutes." He added, "They discussed the attack on Russian aircraft by Ukraine, as well as various other attacks from both sides." Trump continued: "The conversation was good, but not the kind that would lead to immediate peace. President Putin also strongly emphasized that he would have to respond to the recent attack on the airports." Whatsapp Telegram Email Print more of (International)

French Doctor Aboard 'Freedom Flotilla': We will continue our Journey to Gaza despite Israeli threats

Rome – SABA: French physician Baptiste André, one of the participants in the Freedom Flotilla, affirmed that the Israeli enemy's stance in preventing the ships from reaching the Gaza Strip was not surprising, but rather expected from the start. André stated that participants in the flotilla are determined to continue their journey to break the blockade imposed on Gaza, despite repeated Israeli threats, according to Sanad News Agency. He added, 'We count on the support of the international community to continue this humanitarian mission. We receive daily messages of solidarity and support from around the world, confirming the justice of our cause and the need to end the blockade imposed on the Strip.' The 'Madeleine' ship, part of the international Freedom Flotilla Coalition, set sail last Sunday from the port of Catania on the Italian island of Sicily, carrying humanitarian aid intended for the besieged Gaza Strip. Organizers of the initiative hope that the ship — whose journey is expected to take about seven days — will reach its destination despite the threats, carrying a message of solidarity with Gaza's population and a clear call to end the Israeli blockade that has lasted for over 17 years and to stop the ongoing genocide against civilians. Along the approximately 2,000-kilometer route, international activists continue their journey for the third consecutive day aboard the ship, amid expectations of intervention by the Israeli army. They are calling for international and public protection to ensure their safe arrival on Gaza's shores. With American and European support, the Israeli enemy's army has committed acts of genocide in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, resulting in the martyrdom of 54,607 Palestinians — the majority of whom are women and children — and the injury of 125,341 others, according to incomplete figures, as thousands of victims remain under rubble and in streets, unreachable by rescue teams.
