Egypt to see brief respite from heatwave before temperatures climb again - Society

Al-Ahram Weekly19-07-2025
A slight dip in temperatures is forecast across much of Egypt from Saturday through Monday, offering a temporary reprieve from the ongoing heatwave, according to the Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA).
In its weekly bulletin, the EMA indicated that while a marginal decline in daytime temperatures is expected, hot and humid conditions are expected to continue dominating most areas. Nighttime and early morning hours will bring relatively milder, yet still humid, conditions.
Humidity levels are projected to remain high, resulting in apparent (feels-like) temperatures two to four degrees Celsius higher than the actual air temperature.
During this brief cooldown, daytime highs in Greater Cairo will range between 36 and 37°C, while the North Coast—including Alexandria and Marsa Matrouh—will experience more moderate conditions with highs between 31 and 32°C.
Northern Upper Egypt will experience slightly higher values, with daytime temperatures ranging from 37 to 38°C.
From Tuesday onward, temperatures are expected to climb once again. Highs in Greater Cairo and the Nile Delta are projected to reach around 38°C, with feels-like temperatures approaching 40°C. Along the North Coast, highs will rise to 32–33°C, with perceived temperatures ranging from 35 to 36°C.
Northern Upper Egypt is expected to experience highs of 39–40°C, with feels-like temperatures possibly reaching 42°C. Southern Upper Egypt will bear the brunt of the heat, with maximum temperatures forecasted between 41 and 43°C, and may feel closer to 44°C.
Intermittent active winds are expected in parts of Greater Cairo, Lower Egypt, the northwestern coast, and South Sinai. Blowing sand and dust are possible in southern regions, particularly around Halayeb and Shalateen.
The EMA also warned of morning fog, which may reduce visibility on agricultural roads, highways, and routes near water bodies. Fog could be particularly dense in areas along the northwestern coast and parts of Lower Egypt.

Intense heat alert: 72-hour heatwave begins Saturday

The Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) has issued a severe warning regarding the upcoming weather across Cairo and the governorates, as the heatwave is set to intensify, with temperatures reaching their highest levels. The EMA announced that the peak of the heatwave will begin tomorrow, Saturday, and last for a full 72 in South Upper Egypt are forecast to hit 47 degrees Celsius next Monday during daylight hours. The EMA attributes this intense heatwave to the extension of the seasonal Indian Monsoon low-pressure system at the surface, coinciding with an upper-level atmospheric high-pressure system. This combination will push temperatures 4 to 6 degrees Celsius above the normal rates for this time of year. Greater Cairo's maximum temperature is expected to reach 43 degrees Celsius. Humidity levels will also peak, reaching 95 percent in coastal areas overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and 80-85 percent in Greater Cairo and the Nile Delta, significantly increasing the perceived heat during the day.
