New Blood Group 'CRIB' Found In Bengaluru Woman During Surgery, Identified After 10 Months

A groundbreaking discovery has been made in Bengaluru where a woman's unique blood group has been identified for the first time. The woman required surgery, but doctors were unable to match her blood group despite testing samples from about 20 individuals, including her family members.
Remarkably, the surgery proceeded without the need for a blood transfusion. However, determining her blood group became a significant challenge.
According to a BBC report, extensive tests in India failed to identify her blood group, prompting the sample to be sent to the UK's International Blood Group Reference Laboratory (IBGRL). After 10 months of in-depth study at the Bristol lab, scientists identified it as a new blood group, naming it CRIB. This name, Cromer India Bengaluru, was chosen due to its association with the Cromer blood group system and its first identification in a patient from Bengaluru.
The discovery of CRIB was formally announced in June 2025 at the 35th International Society of Blood Transfusion Conference in Milan, Italy. This milestone is a source of pride for India, showcasing the country's scientific prowess in the medical field and enhancing the global blood donation and transfusion system.
Identifying rare blood groups like CRIB is a significant breakthrough, aiding in understanding why blood matching can be difficult for some patients. With this information now in the international database, safe blood transfusions will be possible for any future patients with this rare blood group.

Himachal govt seeks separate e-way bill to track narcotic substances under GST
Shimla, Aug 9 (PTI) In a move to curb the growing menace of drug abuse and prevent the diversion of narcotic substances from pharma companies, the Himachal Pradesh government has formally approached the GST Council, seeking the introduction of a dedicated e-way bill mechanism specifically for narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. With this step, the government aims to enable real-time monitoring of their movement across the supply chain, thereby tightening control at every stage. A state government spokesperson on Saturday said a committee was being constituted under the chairmanship of the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) to oversee operations of licensed pharmaceutical companies dealing in narcotic formulations. 'This committee will include officers from the excise department, Police and Drug Control Authority and would be tasked with ensuring compliance with regulatory norms and preventing misuse of narcotic substances" he said. 'In addition, the Department of State Taxes and Excise has imposed quantity restrictions on the handling of narcotic drugs by license holders. This measure is intended to minimise the risk of excess stock being diverted for illegal use" he said. The spokesperson further added that the government was currently revising the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Rules, 1989 and updating the Integrated Drug Prevention Policy, aiming to strengthen the overall legal and administrative framework for drug control in the state. 'In line with its commitment to grassroots-level enforcement and public awareness, the government has also constituted district-level committees under the chairmanship of the respective deputy commissioners. These committees will ensure effective implementation of laws, facilitate inter-departmental coordination, and organize awareness campaigns, particularly targeting the youth" he said. The exhibition delves into humanity's complex relationship with food, examining its biological, social, and political dimensions. At the inaugural event, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, executive chairperson of Biocon Ltd and board member of SGB, said the exhibition highlights critical links between food systems, ecosystems, farming, and climate change. 'It urges us to rethink how we use resources, grow crops, and adapt to climate change. It provides a space for young minds and experts to question, experiment, and shape ideas that can influence policy. With the upcoming food lab, we aim to spark curiosity, inspire innovation, and drive a healthier, more sustainable future," Mazumdar-Shaw added. Jahnavi Phalkey, founding director of SGB, described the exhibition as an invitation to look beyond what's on our plates and critically examine the systems, values, and choices that feed us. 'It aims to foster a deeper public understanding of how food connects us biologically, socially, and politically," she said. Supported by the Gates Foundation, the exhibition was inaugurated by Ekroop Caur, Secretary of the Department of Electronics, IT, Biotechnology, and Science & Technology, Government of Karnataka. Participants will also receive postgraduate certification in science communication and museum education from the University of Glasgow after one year. Hours Before Heading Home For Raksha Bandhan, Nurse Found Dead In Odisha Hospital

A nurse was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the bathroom of a private hospital in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, just hours before she was scheduled to return home to celebrate Raksha Bandhan. The woman, while on duty, was found dead with a needle inserted in the back of her hand. Her brother told NDTV that police suspect she may have injected herself with a substance, leading to her death. However, the family has alleged the involvement of the hospital authorities, questioning why they were informed about her death only two hours after her body was discovered. 'We were initially told that she was found unconscious in the bathroom. Now, police are saying they found a syringe in her hand, which indicates suicide. I am unaware of any disturbance in her personal or professional life that could have led her to take such a drastic step," he said. According to the nurse's brother, they had recently spoken over the phone, and she was excited to go home in the Ganjam district to celebrate Raksha Bandhan after her duty hours. Police are probing the death from multiple angles, including accidental causes, health issues, personal relationships, workplace harassment, and family disputes. They are reviewing the hospital's CCTV footage and questioning staff members as part of the investigation, NDTV reported. Police have been deployed at the hospital.
