Prabowo's Bastille Day parade debut in France boosts Indonesia's global influence

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto's visit to France brought not only greater visibility for his country but also a chance for Jakarta to portray itself as an active player globally, according to observers.
During the three-day state visit at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron and which ended on Tuesday,
Prabowo attended the Bastille Day Military Parade.
Jakarta sent a joint contingent of 509 personnel from the military and national police to march alongside the French Armed Forces along the Champs-Élysées on Monday. 'Indonesia's presence in the parade symbolises the deepening strategic defence cooperation between Indonesia and France,' Jakarta's Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
In a speech to the French military,
Macron called on his army to join hands with countries that are 'like-minded', including Indonesia. 'Let's defend this freedom alongside other great nations, our European partners, our allies, but also the nations that are far away from us like Indonesia,' he said.
Describing the trip as underscoring the growing strategic partnership between the two countries, Indonesia's Antara news agency said that the two leaders discussed bilateral cooperation and the two-state solution for the
Palestine-Israel conflict

Prabowo's visit comes just over a month after a state visit by Macron to Indonesia, where the two countries signed 21 strategic agreements across various sectors and adopted four joint declarations on global peace and cultural cooperation.

Pakistan jails 8 from former PM Imran Khan's party over 2023 riots

A Pakistani anti-terrorism court sentenced eight senior members of former Prime Minister Imran Khan's party to 10 years in prison late on Tuesday over riots that targeted military sites following Khan's 2023 arrest, their lawyer said. Khan is on trial on similar charges, being tried separately. The government accuses him and other leaders of inciting the May 9, 2023, protests, during which demonstrators attacked military and government buildings, including the army headquarters in Rawalpindi and the residence of a senior commander in Lahore. The prosecution is still presenting witnesses in Khan's proceedings, and Tuesday's verdict does not directly affect his case. The sentences, issued in a prison trial in Lahore, are among a series of prosecutions involving Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. Defence lawyer Burhan Moazzam said they would appeal. 'It is surprising that six people were acquitted while eight were convicted, even though they were all charged under the same allegations,' he said. The case relates to one of several incidents stemming from the May 9 unrest, involving alleged incitement during attacks near a major intersection in Lahore. Moazzam said separate trials were continuing in connection with other incidents that day.

Sanctioned German China expert visits Beijing in sign of easing restrictions

The head of a German think tank sanctioned by Beijing four years ago has returned from a trip to China, suggesting that travel restrictions on the organisation may be easing. Mikko Huotari, the executive director of the Mercator Institute for China Studies (Merics) was in Beijing from July 14 to 17, after being invited by a leading Chinese think tank. Merics was among the European institutions hit with travel bans and asset freezes in March 2021, in retaliation for EU sanctions on Chinese officials accused of perpetrating human rights violations in Xinjiang, charges it denies. The news comes on the eve of a high-stakes EU-China summit . It also comes the week after Beijing further loosened its restrictions on members of the European Parliament, suggesting the Chinese government may be trying to improve the mood music ahead of an event that has been mired in negativity. 'We welcome the easing of travel restrictions and hope that more engagement between researchers and think tankers will be possible in the future. We look forward to future opportunities to engage with our Chinese counterparts whether in China, at MERICS or elsewhere in Europe,' Merics said in a statement. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas hold the 13th round of China-EU High-level Strategic Dialogue in Brussels, Belgium, on July 2. Can China get the US out of the way of better ties with Europe?

This year marks half a century of formal diplomatic relations between China and the European Union as well as the 25th anniversary of the founding of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China. In this, the first of a series of reports examining ties between the two powers, Shi Jiangtao looks at the influence the United States has on the relationship. China has ramped up efforts to mend ties with the European Union ahead of a planned bilateral summit later this month, seeking to capitalise on transatlantic disaffection to promote EU cooperation and counter Washington's unilateralism. But while Beijing's conciliatory overtures to Brussels are distinct from its adversarial stance towards Washington, a long-awaited reset in China-EU ties remains largely out of reach. Brussels has taken a cautious de-risking approach towards Beijing, shaped by its complex alignment with Washington and persistent concerns over China's global rise. Progress is also constrained by structural mistrust, diverging global priorities and Beijing's strategic tilt towards Moscow amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine In the absence of substantive shifts in strategic posture from either side, observers warn of missed opportunities to recalibrate the partnership for this year's landmark 50th anniversary of China-EU diplomatic relations. 01:02 J.D. Vance says 'threat vis-a-vis Europe is not Russia, it's not China' J.D. Vance says 'threat vis-a-vis Europe is not Russia, it's not China' Hopes were initially high for this year's China-EU summit, scheduled for Beijing on Thursday, particularly as surging trade and geopolitical tensions forced the event's cancellation last year.
