SRS employees volunteer in United Way of Aiken's annual Day of Caring
AIKEN, S.C. (WJBF) – Nearly 300 Savannah River Site (SRS) employees volunteered in the United Way of Aiken's 29th annual Day of Caring from Project VISION (Volunteers in Service in Our Neighborhoods) last week.
Volunteers from Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, Savannah River Mission Completion, Battelle Savannah River Alliance and Savannah River National Laboratory employees assisted in yard work, demolition, building wheelchair ramps and repairing gutters throughout several parts in Aiken County on March 21.
The groups partnered with several community agencies, including:
Girl Scouts of South Carolina: Mountains to the Midlands
ACTS of Aiken and Graniteville
North Augusta YMCA
Child Advocacy Center of Aiken County
Tri-Development Center
Helping Hands
The Salvation Army
'Project VISION is such a great program to participate in, because not only do volunteers get the benefit of helping others and their community, they get a chance to bond with their teams,' said Mike Swain, executive vice president and EM CEO. 'There is plenty of laughter, teamwork and community building on display at these sites.'
'It's important to give back to the community,' said Tim Arnold, an IT professional who volunteered. 'We're very blessed at the Site and we should help our community out.'
Project VISION has assisted partners of the Aiken County United Way since 1996.

AUGUSTA, Ga (WJBF) – A day for good luck charms, what do you like? 'My little girl, she loves horses, I prefer the horseshoes,' said Heather Lanier. 'Yes, if it lands on you,' Heather said. At Ladybugs Flowers and Gifts, there's no concerns about things going bad on this day. 'Absolutely, I feel lucky. I'm not afraid of Friday the 13th, I'm a ladybug,' said Shannon Pollard. Yes, lots have been written about ladybugs being a good luck symbol. Richmond County's Extension Agent understands and says they're good for the garden. 'Just really good on pests, especially aphids, because aphids will eat succulents on plants and stuff. You really like them in your garden your home gardens.' At Ladybugs they like them in the store…at least in gift versions, and the store is famous for placing one on the flowers they send out. 'The ladybug where we put the flower arrangements, it's very important to our customers. They will call back and ask for their little ladybug,' said Shannon. Ladybugs mean good luck. What would happen if you found a ladybug on a four-leaf clover under a horseshoe? 'That's super lucky. I would say that's double lucky,' said Shannon. Carthage marks 25 years of volunteering with Day of Caring
CARTHAGE, Mo. — A Silver Jubilee in Carthage is celebrated with volunteerism. Afterall, that's what the United Way's Day of Caring entails. Nationally, it began in 1992 as a way to connect employees of local businesses with the many agencies the United Way supports. The Carthage Area United Way has now been a part of it for 25 years. The volunteers we caught up with today were doing some garden work outside the 'Fair Acres Family YMCA.' Director. 'As a nonprofit, we only have a part-time employee who has to take care of this, over 5,000 square foot garden. All of the vegetables that we raise in this garden go towards our feeding program, where we fed 50-thousand meals last year. And, so we get to add fresh vegetables to that service, and it's just amazing of getting to do that and see those kids get fed that might not be otherwise,' said Tericia Mixon, Fair Acres Family YMCA Exec. Vandalism at Langley Pond Park causes limited availability for bathroom facilities
AIKEN, S.C. (WJBF) – Aiken County Parks and Recreation announced the Langley Pond Park bathroom facilities will now operate under limited hours due to 'continued vandalism.' In a statement posted to the county government Facebook page on Friday, officials state the bathrooms will only be open when park staff are on site. According to the department, staff are typically on site Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and seven days a week from the Memorial Day to Labor Day season.
