Saudi investors target $4 billion Syria reconstruction deals
Saudi Investment Minister Khalid Al-Falih is leading the group, state broadcaster Al-Ekhbariya reported. The ministry stated the forum seeks to 'explore cooperation opportunities and sign agreements that enhance sustainable development and serve the interests of the two brotherly peoples.'
The oil-rich kingdom has emerged as a key supporter of Syria's post-Assad government, formed after Islamist-led rebels ousted longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December. Saudi Arabia and Qatar previously committed to settling Syria's $15 million World Bank debt.
The investment push follows the US lifting most Syria sanctions in May, with President Donald Trump fully dismantling remaining restrictions this month. Trump's move aligns with Gulf states' strategy to reintegrate Syria into global markets.
However, Damascus faces ongoing instability. Recent clashes between Druze fighters and Sunni tribes in Sweida province escalated into Israeli airstrikes, killing over 1,300 people according to monitors. - AFP

The High Election Committee met Saturday with President Ahmad al-Sharaa to brief him on key amendments to the temporary electoral law, following rounds of consultations with various sectors of Syrian society, the committee's head, Mohammad Taha al-Ahmad, said in comments carried by the state news agency SANA. Sharaa stressed the importance of conducting the elections across all Syrian provinces and rejected any notion of territorial division, which all Syrians oppose. bootstrap slideshow The Syrian president also emphasised the need to exclude individuals who supported or collaborated with war criminals, as well as those who promote sectarianism or partition, Ahmad added. The number of seats in the People's Assembly (parliament) will increase from 150 to 210 under the revised system. Based on the 2011 population census, seat allocations across provinces will expand accordingly. The president will appoint 70 of the 210 members, Ahmad said. He explained that after a presidential decree on the temporary electoral system is signed, the election committee will need about a week to form subcommittees, which will then have 15 days to select the electoral bodies. Candidate registration will follow, giving nominees a week to prepare their campaigns, which will include debates with electoral bodies and committee members. The polls are expected to take place between Sept 15 and 20, he confirmed, adding that women will make up at least 20 per cent of the electoral bodies. He also stated that the electoral process will be open to observation by civil society and international organisations, under the supervision of the High Election Committee, which will also ensure the right to challenge candidate lists and final results.

KOTA KINABALU: PKR secretary-general Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh has confirmed the Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) alliance in Sabah for the upcoming state election. "PKR always welcomes cooperation with any party in facing the Sabah state election," she said. "PKR believes it is a win-win combination. It is a win for the people of Sabah, and also a win for all component parties in the cooperation," she told the New Straits Times. Yesterday, the Chief Minister and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor reiterated his commitment to work with Sabah PH for the upcoming state election. He attributed this willingness to work with PH to their leaders' support during the attempt to topple the GRS-led state government in 2023. However, Hajiji said that the people of Sabah should vote wisely to ensure GRS, a local-based coalition, dominates the political scene in the state. Sabah Parti Keadilan Rakyat chief Datuk Mustapha Sakmud had said that despite PH eyeing over 20 seats, both coalitions would still have to sit down to negotiate on which seats to contest.
