Software engineer detained in Faridabad over e-mails threatening to blow up Golden Temple

AMRITSAR: A software engineer was rounded up from Faridabad in connection with the five e-mails sent to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) threatening to blow up the Golden Temple, officials said on Friday.
Police said that Shubam Dubey (24) has been rounded up and is being questioned regarding the first threatening e-mail sent to the SGPC on July 14.
Additionally, Dubey's laptop and phone have also been seized, Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said in a press conference here, noting that he holds a BTech degree and has worked at several companies.
The commissioner also clarified that the engineer has no previous criminal record.
The police nabbed Dubey with the help of the Punjab Police's cybercrime wing and the central intelligence agencies, the officer said, adding that he has not been arrested yet.
Bhullar described the detention as a partial success in the ongoing investigation, stating that the probe continues to progress and more breakthroughs are expected in the coming days.

Chennai, Jul 28 (PTI) In a crackdown against drugs, Tambaram police on Monday said they have seized over 5,000 'ganja chocolates', and arrested 11 including 7 college students, following extensive searches. Nearly 100 police personnel, led by an assistant commissioner, simultaneously searched 12 locations, including 5 apartments. It led to seizure of 166 grams of ganja, and 5,250 ganja chocolates, Hookah-related items from unauthorized hookah centres, illicit tobacco products and 10 mobile phones used for selling ganja, a Tambaram city police release said, adding 11 were arrested. The searches were conducted on July 26, 2025 by police at Potheri, Marimalai Nagar and Kattankulatur, all suburbs of Chennai under the Tambaram city police commissionerate's jurisdiction. Of the 11 arrested, 7 were students studying B Tech, police said, adding 7 cases were registered against the accused (under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 and the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003) in Maraimalai Nagar Police Station. The special police team continues to probe the source of procurement, distribution networks, and drug peddling syndicates involved. 'Strong and sustained efforts are underway to completely dismantle the network and eliminate the drug menace in the region." The police, providing a background, said: 'In the year 2025, so far 318 cases were registered under NDPS Act, in Tambaram police jurisdiction." A total of 1,516 kg of ganja was seized during raids and follow-up investigations and 341 accused persons were arrested in connection with the possession, distribution, and trafficking of narcotic substances. Also, 1,208 kg of seized contraband was destroyed in accordance with established legal protocols. Eleven habitual and notorious drug offenders were detained under the Goondas Act, which demonstrates the firm stand against repeat and organised offenders. Tambaram, on the southern outskirts of Chennai, is the gateway to south Tamil Nadu. In a significant crackdown, the Punjab Police on Sunday busted a trans-border arms and drugs smuggling module, backed by Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency, in Amritsar and arrested five key accused. The operation was conducted by the Amritsar Rural Police in coordination with central agencies. The authorities have seized an assault rifle, 90 live cartridges of AK Rifle, ten live cartridges (9 mm), ₹ 7.50 lakh drug money, a car and three mobile phones. In a post on social media platform X, Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav said: 'In a significant breakthrough, Amritsar Rural Police, in close coordination with central agencies, dismantles a major trans-border smuggling network of sophisticated arms and drug money, operated by Pakistan-ISI backed handlers.' 'The crackdown led to the arrest of five key accused. The seizure includes one AK Saiga 308 assault rifle with 2 magazines, two Glock pistols, 9mm, with 4 magazines, 90 live cartridges of AK Rifle, 10 live cartridges (9mm), ₹ 7.50 lakh drug money, a car and 3 mobile phones,' he added. The seized consignment was intended to be delivered to an associate of gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, said the police. 'Preliminary investigation reveals the accused had direct links to Pakistan-based ISI operatives. The intercepted consignment was intended to be delivered to Nav @ Nav Pandori, a known associate of gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, indicating a broader terror-gangster nexus,' the DGP said. The accused have been identified as Jobanjit Singh alias Joban, resident of village Rangharh, Gora Singh, resident of village Rangharh, Shenshan alias Shalu, resident of Rasulpur Kallar, Amritsar, Sunny Singh alias Ganna, resident of Rasulpur Kallar, and Jaspreet Singh alias Motu, resident of Mugal Mangri, Rupnagar. Meanwhile, on Saturday, the Amritsar Police nabbed four drug smugglers and recovered 6.106 kg of heroin from them. 'We have arrested four major smugglers and recovered 6.106 kg of heroin from them. Sarabjeet Joban has emerged as the kingpin. He was dropping consignments on the Indian side by identifying various locations for a long time,' said Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar.

The Border Security Force (BSF) and Punjab Police thwarted multiple cross-border smuggling attempts along the India-Pakistan border in the past 24 hours, recovering arms, ammunition and heroin. (HT Photo) In Tarn Taran district, BSF troops recovered a plastic bottle near Dal village, apparently dropped by a drone drop, containing pistol parts and four live rounds of ammunition. The operation was launched after specific intelligence from BSF's internal wing. On Saturday, BSF personnel observed drone activity and apprehended a smuggler hiding in a brick kiln near Bachiwind village in Amritsar. 'One pistol, two magazines and 10 live rounds of ammunition were seized. The smuggler, a resident of Gandhiwind village, was believed to be collecting a drone-dropped consignment,' a BSF spokesperson said. In a separate operation in Ferozepur district, BSF troops, acting on reliable input, apprehended three drug peddlers from a field near Naubheram village. Their interrogation led to the recovery of a packet of heroin, weighing 500 grams. A BSF spokesperson said these operations expose the nefarious activities of Pakistani terror syndicates.
