Barbie launches its first doll with Type 1 diabetes to represent inclusivity: Check its special features

Barbie has launched its first doll with Type 1 diabetes to promote inclusivity. Part of the Fashionistas line, the doll features a small glucose monitor on her arm to track blood sugar, held by heart-shaped medical tape.
She also has a phone showing the tracking app and an insulin pump on her waist for automatic insulin. The doll wears a blue polka dot outfit and carries a pastel blue purse for essentials like snacks or medical supplies.
This new Barbie helps raise awareness and represents children living with Type 1 diabetes. It represents that managing health can be a part of everyday life.
According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, children with Type 1 diabetes should be treated just like other normal children. At the same time, they should wear a medical alert bracelet for constant monitoring.
Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease, is a long-term condition. Children with such conditions need daily insulin shots to stay healthy.
The doll was made in partnership with Breakthrough T1D, a diabetes research group. Barbie will also donate these dolls to the 2025 Children's Congress, where kids with diabetes meet US lawmakers.
Barbie's team worked closely with the group to ensure the doll looked realistic. The team also ensured that the doll included medical tools used by people with Type 1 diabetes.
Krista Berger from Mattel said this step would help children see their own lives and challenges reflected in the toys they play with. It aims to spread awareness and support among young kids.
'Introducing a Barbie doll with type 1 diabetes marks an important step in our commitment to inclusivity and representation," Berger said in a release.
"Barbie helps shape children's early perceptions of the world, and by reflecting medical conditions like T1D, we ensure more kids can see themselves in the stories they imagine and the dolls they love,' she added.
Exactly a year ago in July 2024, Mattel launched its first Barbie doll for visually-impaired children to promote inclusion. The doll comes with a white and red cane, sunglasses and eyes that look slightly upwards and outwards.
Mattel worked with the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) and the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) to make sure the doll is accurate and accessible.
The blind Barbie has clothes made from touch-friendly fabrics, like a smooth blouse and a ruffled skirt. The doll's box also has braille writing.

Is Drinking 100% Pure Coffee Good For You?

A few weeks ago, NDTV visited Timbertales - a hidden resort nestled within a 100 acre coffee plantation in Coorg, Karnataka. While the stay was wholesome, it was what we learned about coffee that lingered. Surrounded by lush greenery and the earthy scent of dew and roasted beans, every moment at Timbertales was like walking in nature's lap. During the stay, Somana, the resort's resident coffee connoisseur, casually asked: "Did you know most coffee in India contains chicory?" What Is Chicory And Why Is It In Your Coffee Chicory is a root from the same family as dandelions. It is generally roasted, ground, and added to coffee to enhance its flavour. Chicory has a woody flavour and nutty aroma, which is widely enjoyed in France and India. "The more chicory in your coffee, the cheaper it is," Somana shared with a smile. Is Chicory Root In Your Coffee Acidic While chicory enhances the flavour and aroma of coffee, it may affect your gut. Somana noted that excessive chicory could trigger acidity. Science supports this claim. While chicory is slightly less acidic than coffee itself, overconsumption can lead to gastrointestinal discomfort, including bloating and flatulence. A study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that chicory inulin products, though high in fibre, may increase digestive symptoms mildly. Interestingly, some people who blame coffee for their acidity might actually be reacting to the chicory mixed in it. Some studies have also found that chicory root is good for digestion, when taken in moderation. "Chicory is generally added to reduce the bitterness of coffee," Pavithra N Raj, Chief Dietician at Manipal Hospital, Yeshwantpur, Bangaluru, Karnataka, told NDTV. "However, filter coffee without chicory tends to be less acidic. Adding chicory may make the coffee more acidic, and might lead to more digestive issues. The percentage of chicory in your coffee powder should not exceed 20-30%," adds the expert. Is Drinking 100% Pure Coffee Good For You This leads to an obvious question: If additives like chicory can complicate digestion, is pure coffee a better choice? For the uninitiated, 100% pure coffee is just natural coffee and water - no blends, no filter. Turns out, pure coffee, particularly black coffee, offers several health benefits when consumed in moderation. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, coffee contains antioxidants that offer these nine health benefits Boosts energy Enhances focus Keeps your blood sugar levels in check Good for your heart health May even help you live longer Reduces the risk of Alzheimer's disease Lower chances of getting colon cancer Promotes liver health Decreases Parkinson's Disease risk Dietitian Pavithra N Raj says, "Pure coffee is also believed to help you lose weight. Many people prefer to drink it before they hit the gym. So, it is okay to drink pure coffee as long as you are drinking it in moderation." "There is no harm in drinking chicory coffee or plain black coffee. These instant coffee powders usually contain less chicory content and more coffee, which again is not harmful to a person. So, you can drink both types but in moderation," concludes the expert. While chicory root can lead to acidity, it is not all bad. You can have it but in moderation, as the expert recommends. Also, make sure to check with a healthcare provider before adding anything to your diet.

Serena Williams warns young women: Trust your body, speak up early

In a candid conversation with PEOPLE, 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams opened up about the importance of listening to your body—a message she wants every young woman to hear. 'Your body is always talking to you. Listen to it. Trust it,' Serena urged, as she stepped into her new role as women's health advisor for Ritual, a health and wellness company. She shared her passion for helping women—particularly from marginalised communities—gain access to better healthcare. Williams also opened up about her personal health struggles, including a life-threatening pulmonary embolism and a recent branchial cyst. She pushed back against the social expectation that women should 'feel tired or uncomfortable and just push through.' 'I've been there. Even with everything I know about my body, I've had moments where I didn't feel right and couldn't get answers. We deserve better,' she said. A near-fatal experience after childbirth Williams' advice stems from personal experience. After giving birth to her daughter Olympia in 2017 via emergency C-section, she faced a serious health scare—pulmonary embolism, a condition where blood clots block arteries in the lungs. Despite voicing her concerns about shortness of breath and a history of blood clots, medical staff initially dismissed her symptoms. 'After giving birth, I knew something was wrong, but I had to fight to be believed,' she said. 'Not everyone gets that chance.' What is pulmonary embolism? Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a serious condition caused by a blockage in one or more arteries in the lungs, usually due to blood clots that travel from the legs (deep vein thrombosis). According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, when a clot travels and blocks blood supply to an organ, it is called an embolism. If untreated, PE can be fatal. Common symptoms include: Shortness of breath Chest pain Rapid or irregular heartbeat Light-headedness or fainting Coughing or coughing up blood Sweating Low blood pressure A feeling of anxiety Risk factors include recent surgery, pregnancy, immobility, and history of clots. What is a branchial cyst? Branchial cleft cysts are small, fluid-filled lumps that form under the skin on one or both sides of the neck. Often present from birth, they may remain unnoticed until infected. According to the Cleveland Clinic, they are usually benign but may become painful or require surgical removal to avoid complications. Symptoms include: Neck lumps that may grow Swelling after respiratory infections Painful swallowing Neck pain or noisy breathing Itchy or irritated skin Small neck openings that may drain fluid Serena's message: Speak up and stay informed Williams' story is a reminder of the gaps in women's healthcare and the importance of self-advocacy. 'I've spent my whole life learning about my body—on the court, through pregnancy, through recovery. I've had to fight to be heard, even when I knew something was wrong,' she said. Now a mother of two, Serena says she wants her daughters, Olympia and Adira, to grow up with confidence in their bodies and self-awareness. 'We talk about movement, rest, and how our bodies feel, not how they look. Health isn't one-size-fits-all, and I want them to feel empowered to listen to themselves,' she said. Her final message to women: 'You're not alone.'
