Meanwhile, India and Brazil strengthened their bilateral ties at the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue 2025, reaffirming their commitment to a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific.Both nations emphasised cooperation on regional security, maritime freedom and sustainable development.General Anil Chauhan and Admiral Aguiar Freire, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Brazil, discussed shared values and interests, underscoring the importance of a rules-based international order and a growing convergence of views between India and Brazil on regional and global issues. At the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, CDS Chauhan noted that both countries gained independence at the same time, and Pakistan was ahead of India in various metrics, including social, economic, and GDP per capita, but today, New Delhi is ahead of them."Now, on the India-Pakistan relationship, we are not operating without a strategy. When we gained independence, Pakistan was ahead of us on every metric: social, economic, and GDP per capita. Today, India is ahead on all fronts: economic performance, human development, and social harmony, despite our greater diversity. That didn't happen by accident; it's a result of long-term strategy," he said."Diplomatically, we've reached out like in 2014 when the PM invited Nawaz Sharif. But it takes two hands to clap. If all we get in return is hostility, then disengagement may itself be a sound strategy for now," CDS Chauhan added.

India has to contend with political challenges from ‘China, America, Pakistan' now: Congress

After US President Donald Trump announced 25 per cent tariff on India, Congress on Thursday took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that he once spoke of the TOP (Tomato, Onion, Potato) challenges in prices, but the country now has to contend with the political challenges arising out of CAP (China, America, Pakistan). Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh said that President Trump is 'piling it on India'. In an X post, Ramesh wrote, 'Since May 10, he has claimed 30 times that he stopped Operation Sindoor. These claims were made in four different countries. On June 18, he hosted the Pakistan Army Chief and the orchestrator of the Pahalgam terror attacks for lunch at the White House.' 'On July 30, he imposed a 25% tariff on US imports from India plus a penalty on India's oil and defence purchases from Russia. In addition, sanctions on at least six Indian companies were imposed for engaging with Iran,' he said. On July 30, Trump also announced that the US will help Pakistan explore and develop its oil and gas reserves, Ramesh said, adding that this comes on top of his full-throated support to Pakistan receiving financial assistance from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. 'Prime Minister Modi once spoke of the TOP (Tomato, Onion, Potato) challenge in prices. Now India has to contend with the political challenge arising out of CAP (China, America, Pakistan),' Ramesh said. 'He (Modi) invested very heavily in his personal friendship with President Trump, as he had done earlier with President Xi. Both have the full measure of the man now –? someone who can be managed easily by playing to his gigantic ego and self-obsession,' the Congress leader said. The remarks came a day after the US President announced the imposition of 25 per cent tariff on all goods coming from India starting August 1, plus an unspecified penalty on the country for buying Russian crude oil and military equipment. The announcement is being seen as a pressure tactic to get New Delhi to agree to demands made by the US, which has, in recent days, got favourable trade deals with major partners like Japan, the UK and the European Union. In a social media post, Trump termed India's trade policies as 'most strenuous and obnoxious'. 'All things not good! India will therefore be paying a tariff of 25 per cent, plus a penalty for the above, starting on August first,' Trump wrote. The penalty was announced as India has made large purchases of oil and military equipment from Russia. India is the first country Trump has slapped a penalty over Russian imports. Earlier, he had imposed high tariffs on China but refrained from levying any penalty despite Beijing being Russia's largest oil importer. On Wednesday, the Opposition parties slammed the government for the US' imposition of the tariff and penalties on Indian imports, and said that Prime Minister Modi's friendship with the US president meant little. Ramesh had said that Modi should take inspiration from former prime minister Indira Gandhi and stand up to the president of the United States.

Arrest of nuns in Chhattisgarh echoes in Parliament

Congress and its allies raised the arrest of three, including two nuns from Kerala, in Chhattisgarh over charges of alleged human trafficking and religious conversion, demanding their immediate release. At the Zero Hour, Alappuzha MP K.C. Venugopal argued sisters Preeta Mary and Vandana Francis of the Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate order were being kept in jail without any reason. He enumerated that the two nuns have been serving cancer patients, poor and deprived people, and offering palliative care. Mr. Venugopal further accused the Chhattisgarh Chief Minister of adhering to the Bajrang Dal's narrative. He urged the government to intervene and release the nuns immediately. BJP in Kerala has distanced itself from Bajrang Dal, terming the arrest a 'misunderstanding'. However, in parliament, Durg MP Vijay Baghel accused the two nuns of facilitating potential religious conversion. Enumerating the chain of events, he held one of the three women being escorted by the nuns was seen to be crying at the railway station and wanted to go back home. Apart from this issue, Lok Sabha conducted business as usual, taking questions related to communication, space, and other constituency-centric issues. In Rajya Sabha, the debate over Operation Sindoor continued with both Minister of External Affairs, S Jaishankar, and Leader of the House, J.P. Nadda, making statements. 'We gave a message that we are now responding to Pakistani attack and we will keep responding. If that fighting has to stop, Pakistan must make a request and that request must come from the channel of Pakistan's Director-General of Military Operations,' said Mr. Jaishankar. Mr. Nadda alleged that the anti-terrorism policy of the previous Congress-led governments at the Centre had suffered due to their eagerness to appease Pakistan. Questioning the Congress's stand on counter-terrorism measures, Mr. Nadda asked the Opposition leaders to introspect about their responses to terror attacks when they were in power. 'The Army was the same, but there was no political will,' he claimed. Despite both denying any foreign interference in the Indo-Pak ceasefire, several Opposition members raised US's role in the outcome. They also urged the Centre to display humility and apologise to the Pahalgam victims' families. Today, Home Minister Amit Shah will move a resolution in Rajya Sabha to extend President's Rule in Manipur. He moved a similar motion in the lower House yesterday. The Upper house may also take up The Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2025 for discussion and passing. The Lok Sabha will discuss the The National Sports Governance Bill, 2025. Lauding Home Minister Amit Shah's reply to the debate on Operation Sindoor in the Rajya Sabha as phenomenal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday that he categorically expressed the government's stand on national security, including uprooting of terror networks. In posts on X, Modi praised External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's "exceptional" speech as well. He emphasised India's efforts to make terrorism a subject of global attention, highlighted the country's fitting response through Operation Sindoor and how the government is increasing the safety of citizens, Modi said. Posting the link to Shah's speech, he said, "A phenomenal speech by Home Minister Amit Shah Ji in the Rajya Sabha. He categorically expressed our Government's point of view on key aspects relating to national security, uprooting terror networks and the success of Operation Sindoor." Both Shah and Jaishankar spoke in the House on Wednesday as the discussion related to the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor ended.
