Cyprus wildfire: Two die in burned car as 44C heat expected

BBC News4 days ago
Two people have died in a car in a wildfire which has torn through southern Cyprus amid soaring temperatures which are expected to climb to 44C on Thursday. Cypriot police said two charred bodies were found in a burnt out vehicle after the blaze started in the village of Malia in the Limassol district on Wednesday afternoon. The bodies are yet to be formally identified, but local media reports say the car belonged to a 77-year-old woman who had been reported missing. The pair are understood to be an elderly couple from the area.More than a dozen other people have been treated for injuries related to the fire, which has already destroyed homes and ravaged 100 sq km (40 sq m) of land.
More than 250 firefighters were deployed to battle the fire, which has been fanned by strong winds on soaring temperatures. The country's Department of Meteorology has issued an extreme maximum temperature alert for Thursday, with a high of 44C expected in inland areas.Cyprus Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis said there were "no active fronts" in the fire, but "flare-ups" continued in the area. Several communities have been left without electricity or air conditioning as a result of the blaze, which tore through properties."When I entered my house, I saw the mountain and the valley full of flames," Antonis Christou, who lives in Kandou, one of the villages affected by the fire, told the AFP agency."I cried, really I cried, because people got burnt".Neighbouring countries have been asked to support the firefighting effort by the Cypriot government.Cyprus has requested support for its firefighting effort through the European Union's civil protection mechanism.Spain is expected to send two aircraft on Thursday, government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said. Two firefighting aircraft are on standby in Jordan, while two more are expected from Spain, Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis told public broadcaster CyBC.Witness testimony which suggests the fire was started deliberately has been passed onto police by the fire service. Europe has faced searing temperatures this summer during heatwaves, with wildfires also taking hold in the Greek island of Crete, Turkey and Spain. Cyprus, which is facing a drought, is routinely hit by wildfires during the summer months. In 2021, four Egyptian farm workers died in a wildfire which burned an area of around 55 sq km (21 sq m) in the Limassol district.

ROTC cadet, 22, dies during summer training program in Fort Knox

A U.S. Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps cadet died during a training camp at Fort Knox, officials say, as a heat wave swept across parts of the South and the Midwest. Neil Edara, 22, of Ridgewood, New Jersey, became unresponsive during land navigation training on Thursday at the Kentucky military base, located about 35 miles south of Louisville, according to the U.S. Army ROTC Cadet Command. The Rutgers University-New Brunswick student was attending Cadet Summer Training as part of the 9th Regiment, Advanced Camp, the command stated in a press release on Saturday. He was at the installation's land navigation site, where cadets practice what the ROTC website describes as an 'essential skill,' which involves learning how to determine locations and distances for travel and targeting. Upon falling unconscious, Edara received medical attention at the scene and was evacuated by helicopter to the University of Louisville, where he was pronounced dead. The cause of Edara's death was not immediately clear, and the incident is under investigation. 'Cadet Edara was one of the most dedicated and promising young leaders I've had the privilege to know,' Lieutenant Colonel Timothy Sorensen, professor of military science at Rutgers University, said. 'His calm, collected demeanor and unwavering commitment to excellence left a lasting impact on everyone around him. Sorenson said the loss has been deeply felt across the ROTC and Rutgers University communities. 'Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,' he added. The command's news release did not mention the heat wave gripping portions of central Kentucky, as temperatures soared past 90 degrees at Fort Knox late last week. They are expected to continue climbing until Wednesday, according to AccuWeather. The National Weather Service released a heat advisory on Monday morning, which is expected to remain in effect until Wednesday evening. 'Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun,' it advised. According to his LinkedIn, Edara was majoring in biology and was due to graduate next year. Edara was also a volunteer with the Ridgewood Ambulance Corps before he joined the cadets, Ridgewood Mayor Paul Vagianos said, according to He was a very special young man who showed us all the true meaning of service,' Vagianos said. 'And while I did not know him, I will never forget him.'

Floods in Romania kill three, hundreds evacuated

BUCHAREST, July 28 (Reuters) - Severe overnight floods in eastern Romania killed three elderly people and damaged thousands of homes, with hundreds of people evacuated and four helicopters searching for stranded villagers, officials said on Monday. Some 25 villages across nine counties were affected by heavy rain and high winds, which tore off roofs and uprooted trees, blocking traffic on some national roads, according to the emergency response agency. It released footage showing wooden houses and cars swept away by the floodwaters, with rescue workers checking vehicles for potential victims. The worst hit were Neamt and Suceava counties in eastern Romania, where two rivers burst their banks, killing a 66-year-old man and forcing hundreds of people to evacuate. All access roads to the village of Brosteni in Suceava county were blocked. The emergency response agency later said that two women, an 85- and an 83-year-old, were also victims of the flood. Firefighters had to use an excavator to retrieve one of the bodies from a riverbed. The Environment Ministry's water management agency said some rivers rose to record high water levels. Repair works on collapsed bridges were underway, it said.
