AMD Ryzen AI Max Geekbench scores reveal a power drop in 300-series APUs

Not all laptop chips are created equal, and that's as true of AMD's innovative Ryzen AI Max "Strix Halo" APU as any.
AMD unveiled the Strix Halo APU in January as the Ryzen AI Max 300 series, debuting three consumer chipset variants and four variants made for workstation-class machines.
While we normally expect a large performance gap in between, say, a Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 9. But, with a name like Ryzen AI Max, you may not be expecting such a performance gap between the three APUs in the AI Max series.
An APU, or accelerated processing unit, is a chipset that combines the CPU and an integrated graphics tile. AMD coined the term back in 2011. AMD uses APU for all of its mobile chipsets, from the Ryzen AI Max to the Ryzen AI 300 series.
So far, we've seen only systems powered by the 16-core Ryzen AI Max+ 395 chip, including the Asus ROG Flow Z 13 gaming laptop.
However, the Ryzen AI Max family offers more budget-friendly options, too, from the 12-core Ryzen AI Max 390 down to the 8-core Ryzen AI Max 385.
Last week, we finally saw the 8-core Strix Halo chipset's performance. An HP ZBook Ultra 14 G1a featuring this budget-friendly APU has been benchmarked on Geekbench 6, and the results were uploaded to the Geekbench archives.
So, how does the 8-core Ryzen AI Max PRO 385 stack up against the 16-core 395? Let's take a look.
According to results uploaded to Geekbench on May 27, the HP ZBook Ultra 14 G1a with an AMD Ryzen AI Max PRO 385 APU scored a Geekbench single-core score of 2,489 and a multicore score of 14,136.
We expected these scores to be higher. However, a few factors may explain the larger-than-expected performance gap.
First, there's the hardware matchup (8 cores vs. 16). The Ryzen AI Max PRO 385 also has a lower max frequency than the flagship, which could explain the dip in single-core performance.
The difference in RAM between the HP ZBook Ultra configuration Laptop reviewed and the ZBook scores uploaded to Geekbench could also be behind the score differences, as RAM affects how Geekbench scores are calculated.
Our take: It has long battery life, a sharp, bright display, solid speakers, and incredible performance and graphics.

While the Ryzen AI Max 385 and its professional variant will still be interesting chipsets — as both still feature the larger Radeon 8060S integrated graphics tile — these early benchmarks clarify a few things.
The Ryzen AI Max 300 series starts at 385 and tops out at 395.
The Ryzen AI 300 Strix Point series starts with the Ryzen AI 9 365 and tops out with the Ryzen AI 9 HX 375.
The Ryzen AI 7 350 and Ryzen AI 5 340 are both technically on AMD's Krackan Point architecture.
Based on AMD's naming convention, the Ryzen AI Max 300 is designed to sit directly atop the Ryzen AI 300 series. So, as the entry-level Ryzen AI Max chip, the 385's Geekbench scores are just above what we've seen from the top end of the Ryzen AI 300 series.
We're not certain yet how expensive the Ryzen AI Max 385 will be compared to its slightly less powerful Ryzen AI 300 series counterparts, as only two Ryzen AI Max systems are on the market so far.
The HP ZBook Ultra with the Ryzen AI Max 385 starts at $2,599. Meanwhile, the Asus ROG Flow Z13 doesn't have a Ryzen AI Max 385 variant but costs $2,099 for the slightly more powerful Ryzen AI Max 390 chipset.
But based on those prices, you are paying quite a bit more for the Ryzen AI Max chipset and its more powerful Radeon 8060S iGPU.
The real question is, is the Ryzen AI Max worth its high price tag? Right now, that's still up for debate.

Of the mass number of retro gaming handhelds available today, the one missing link is a device that can help us relive the days when dual-screen gaming reigned supreme. The best options for Nintendo DS software emulation are either too flat or too expensive. Niche handheld maker Ayaneo may have a winner with its new iteration of the Pocket DS featuring a large 7-inch screen and a smaller secondary touchscreen, all housed in a clamshell that's so damn easy to take on the road. The Pocket DS is essentially a revised Ayaneo Flip 1S DS, which the handheld maker launched last week. The Flip 1S DS is a Windows-based handheld PC, but the Pocket DS runs on Android and uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 chip instead of the high-end AMD CPU. In a Tuesday livestream, Ayaneo showed off this new handheld and its two large screens that look like the all-grown-up version of Nintendo's first attempt at a dual-display device. Beyond the ergonomic bottom grip that may make it more comfortable to grip for longer, the real draw are the two large displays that fold down on each other. The main display is a 7-inch OLED panel with a max 165Hz refresh rate. That means it should be able to handle Android games or upscaled retro titles at high frame rates. The Pocket DS's 1080p screen is also higher resolution than the Steam Deck, though with a max of 800 nits of peak HDR brightness, it may be slightly dimmer than Valve's popular handheld PC. The 5-inch secondary display isn't OLED—it's IPS LCD, though it has the same 4:3 aspect ratio as the original Nintendo DS' twin displays. In its livestream, Ayaneo showed how users could swipe apps from one screen and swap them to the other display. The dual screens essentially allow users to open up the app drawer and performance center and run a game or YouTube video at the same time. You can also play games while running a separate app or even open two games at once. The main draw for most players will be Nintendo DS emulation, though even then users may still have issues that could be enough to ruin the experience. Other twin-screen devices like the OneXSugar Sugar 1—with its flip-up second display and fold-down grips—can show two screens in DS games. The problem is modern software emulators still struggle to let users use the two screens at the same time. Reviews of the Sugar 1 pointed out this problem with emulators on Android: you can't access the bottom touchscreen while controlling the main display. Ayaneo may have a solution for this issue with a special button located along the bottom of the Pocket DS that centers control on one display or the other. The other big impediment will be price. Ayaneo products are relatively high-quality, but they're notoriously pricey compared to competitors like Anbernic, Retroid, or Miyoo. On Monday, Ayaneo said its new sub-brand, named Konkr, will offer cheaper devices starting with the Konkr Fit 7-inch handheld. Ayaneo didn't share any pricing or a release date for the Pocket DS. We can only guess that an OLED panel won't come cheap, though it would likely be slightly less pricey than the Flip 1S DS at its astronomical $1,300 MSRP. It's only slightly cheaper if you go in on the Indiegogo campaign (just beware any crowdfunding campaign has a chance of failing). Even $500 may seem too steep for what's still just an Android-based handheld. So far, the remedies for DS gaming have been less than ideal. Retroid has its Retroid Pocket Flip 2 clamshell handheld with a large main display but no secondary screen. The same retro handheld maker also makes a dual-screen add-on that wraps around the company's other devices like the Retroid Pocket Mini, but it won't provide the ease and portability of a true clamshell. Then there's the MagicX Zero40 with its vertically oriented display. This allows you to use emulators to display the Nintendo DS' two screens at once. Again, this is less than ideal, and it fails to offer the same convenience of Nintendo's long-abandoned dual-screen handhelds.

How Intel Stock Falls To $10

Intel stock (NASDAQ:INTC) has barely moved this year, up just 2%, as the company continues to struggle with shrinking relevance in its core CPU market and underwhelming progress in its foundry ambitions, despite investing over $50 billion in the space. Revenue has collapsed from $79 billion in 2021 to $53 billion in 2024. While the broader PC market is showing signs of stabilization, Intel's top line is projected to decline again this year - suggesting revenue stagnation could become the norm. Meanwhile, stocks of competitors like AMD and Nvidia are soaring, up 43% and 24% respectively in 2025. Could Intel stock plunge to $10 - half its current value? It may seem extreme, but given the steady erosion of its fundamentals, it's no longer unthinkable. Below, we provide a scenario considering three key metrics, namely revenues, net margins, and price-to-earnings multiple. Intel revenues declined from $79 billion in 2021 to $53 billion in 2024 as Intel's CPU sales declined due to the cooling off of the PC market post-Covid-19, and also due to market share gains by rival AMD. The rise in mobile devices and increasing demand for AI chips - areas where Intel has a limited presence - have also hurt. While the PC market is recovering with sales projected to grow by low single-digits this year, Intel's revenues don't look like they will stabilize just yet, with consensus estimates projecting a 2% dip in sales this year. There remains a possibility that Intel could see its revenues stagnate in the interim due to a host of factors. While Intel struggles, Will AGI Take Nvidia Stock To $300? Foundry business may not be taking off: There's are increasing signs that Intel's foundry bet isn't taking off the way the company had expected. During its most recent earnings call, Intel appeared to play down hopes of winning major external customers for its 18A process - its most advanced manufacturing tech to date - with the leadership noting that 18A will primarily be used for internal products to begin with. Intel also said in its quarterly filing that it could potentially 'pause or discontinue' its next-generation 14A process if it was unable to win a significant customer. However, the market for foundry services is actually booming. Taiwan's TSMC - the world's largest foundry player - sees its AI-related chips revenue doubling in 2025 and rising at a mid-40% levels over the next five years. Intel, on the other hand, is witnessing very little of the action. CPU market share losses: Intel's CPU business could face further pressure, despite new launches, as the generative AI era could open the doors to more competition as PC makers look to incorporate more smarts into their devices. For instance, both chip-designer ARM and mobile chipset specialist Qualcomm are pushing into the PC space and Microsoft's latest Copilot+ PCs use ARM chips that offer AI features and consume less power. On the server front too, there could be challenges as accelerated computing servers used for generative AI applications typically require just one CPU for eight or more GPUs in AI servers. Moreover, GPU makers such as Nvidia are playing a bigger role in overall server system design, looking to replace dedicated CPUs from the likes of Intel with lower-powered ARM chips instead of Intel's. This could impact Intel's bread-and-butter CPU business. Foundry utilization dilemma: Intel also faces a dilemma of sorts. While competitors like AMD and NVIDIA use TSMC's superior, cutting-edge manufacturing processes, Intel must balance product competitiveness with the financial health of its own costly foundries. Intel has already been sending some chip orders TSMC's way in recent years for crucial components of some of its recent processors. While this outsourcing boosts Intel's product performance, it simultaneously starves its internal manufacturing division of crucial orders needed to cover fixed costs. This forces Intel into a difficult choice: risk using its own possibly less advanced fabs and falling behind rivals in the CPU game, or undermine its internal foundry operations by further embracing TSMC. Intel is clearly on the back foot. While the company is keen to build momentum - employee morale can't be high either. Customers and buyers are more likely to want the 'best' and if the word on the street is that Intel isn't the 'future' - it's less likely to be the choice 'now.' Everything becomes just a tad harder. Intel revenues are projected at about $52 billion for this year per consensus estimates and there is a possibility that sales could remain flat in the coming years, due to the aforementioned factors. Margins Fall Further? Intel's adjusted net margins (net income, or profits after expenses and taxes, calculated as a percent of revenues) have been on a declining trajectory - they fell from levels of over 28% in 2021 (and in years before that) to just about 8.5% in 2023 due to sales declines and considerable losses in the foundry business. The metric fell to negative levels in 2024 as Intel posted losses. While the markets are likely betting that Intel's margins could eventually expand to historical levels as it sets its product and manufacturing roadmap in order, there remains a possibility that margins could remain depressed, remaining at about 5% levels in 2025. Costs associated with the foundry ramp-up could hurt Intel's bottom line. Moreover, Intel's move to outsource production of its Arrow Lake chip to TSMC could potentially reduce the utilization of its own manufacturing facilities. Intel has also not exactly been known for production efficiency. For perspective, in 2023, Intel's foundry business reported an operating loss of $7 billion on sales of $18.9 billion. Separately, higher competition in the CPU space - where new entrants such as Qualcomm and ARM - might also force Intel to resort to some amount of discounting. How This Impacts Intel's Stock Now at the current market price of about $20 per share, Intel trades at about 160x estimated 2025 earnings and about 1.7x consensus revenue. Since Intel was unprofitable in 2024, let's ignore the P/E multiple for this year. In 2023, Intel traded at about 19x. So what explains the difference in Intel's P/E multiple using 2023 and 2025 earnings? It's because investors are betting that things will get better going forward. However, if Intel doesn't deliver in the interim, investor sentiment could go further downhill. If we combine the scenario we detailed above - which assumes no meaningful annual revenue growth between 2025 and 2027 with adjusted net margins falling to about 5% - this means that adjusted net income could fall from about $4.4 billion in 2023 ($1.05 per share) to about $2.5 billion in 2027 ($0.58). Bad times make it easier to imagine worse times - and when that happens, things can spiral causing investors to assign an even lower multiple to Intel re-assessing Intel's recovery path. For example, if Intel's investors assign a multiple of 18x to Intel, following its continued underperformance, this would translate into a stock price of just about $10 per share. What about the time horizon for this negative-return scenario? While our example illustrates this for a 2027 timeline, in practice, it won't make much difference whether it takes two years or four. If the competitive threat plays out, with Intel also continuing to struggle with manufacturing, we could see a meaningful correction in the stock.
