‘No More Ullu And Chill?': Internet In Meltdown Mode As Govt Bans 25 OTT Platforms

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has recently banned 25 OTT platforms, including popular names like Ullu, Alt Balaji, Desiflix and MoodX. These sites were found hosting vulgar, obscene and in some cases, pornographic content without meaningful stories or social messages. Once the news started circulating on social media, people quickly reacted with jokes, memes and even poked fun at how such questionable content was easily available online.

The list includes ALTBalaji (ALTT) and Ullu, Desiflix, Mojflix, Triflicks, Boomex, ShowX, MoodX, Sol Talkies, Adda TV, HotX VIP, NeonX VIP, Hulchul App, Big Shots App, Gulab App, Kangan App, Bull App, Jalva App, Navarasa Lite, Wow Entertainment, Look Entertainment, Hitprime, Fugi, Feneo and ShowHit.

What's The Issue:
As per Hindustan Times, officials shared that many of these OTT platforms were showing content with strong sexual hints and long scenes that showed nudity and adult acts. Some of this content was almost like p*rn. They also pointed out that most of these shows or videos didn't have any real story, a clear theme or a message. Instead, they mostly focused on bold and inappropriate visuals without much meaning or purpose.
Officials said that the government took this step because the content on these platforms broke important Indian laws. The material was going too far and crossing legal limits, which led to strict action against these platforms.
According to Storyboard18, the government made it clear that digital platforms and intermediaries must follow the rules under the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. They are required to remove or block access to any unlawful content shared on their platforms. This includes videos or shows that are considered vulgar, obscene or harmful to viewers.
