Perak police seize RM4.67m worth of drugs from abandoned SUV in Gerik
IPOH, June 11 — Perak police seized over 123 kilograms of methamphetamine and ketamine valued at RM4.67 million from an abandoned sports utility vehicle (SUV) near Loji Taman Pulai Savana in Gerik on June 6.
Perak Police Chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the discovery was made after a member of the public alerted authorities to a suspiciously parked Honda HR-V along the roadside at around 1am.
'The prolonged presence of the vehicle raised suspicions, prompting a police patrol unit and a criminal investigation team to inspect the locked SUV,' he said during a press conference at the Perak Police Headquarters here today.
Officers found 80 transparent plastic packets containing suspected methamphetamine weighing 82.8 kilograms, along with 39 packets of suspected ketamine totaling 40.4 kilograms.
Noor Hisam said the drugs were in plain sight in the vehicle's bonnet, and there were no signs of the driver or passengers.
'Our officers believe the vehicle had been left there for about 30 minutes, as the engine was still warm when it was found,' he said.
Investigations revealed that the SUV had been cloned, with its chassis number tampered with and engine number altered.
'The original registration was traced to a nurse residing in Serdang, Selangor,' Noor Hisam said.
He described the seizure as significant, estimating the recovered drugs could have supplied 350,000 addicts — nearly half the population of Ipoh.
'We believe these drugs were intended for distribution within Perak and potentially to neighbouring states.
'Our investigation will also focus on the origin of the drugs and why the vehicle was abandoned in Gerik,' he added.
Noor Hisam noted this is one of the largest drug seizures in the state for the first half of the year.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction.

Helmi called on members of the public who witnessed the incident or have any information to contact the Seberang Perai Tengah police or senior investigating officer Assan Alimudin at 012-4418081. The case is being probed for committing mischief by fire under Section 435 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison and a fine, upon conviction. The case is also being investigated under Section 6 of the Explosives Act 1957 for causing an explosion likely to endanger life or property, punishable by up to seven years' imprisonment, a fine of RM10,000, or both, upon conviction.

Manjung district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Hasbullah Abd Rahman, said the investigations are being conducted under Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. He said the investigation was launched following a report lodged at the Manjung district police headquarters at 4.40pm yesterday regarding a Facebook post by an account under the name 'Khalid Yunus'. "The account published an offensive message about the UPSI students involved in the recent road tragedy. "We advise the public not to upload any content that may cause unease or disrupt public order," he said in a statement today. Earlier, it was reported that the Perak State Education Department had directed the district education office to prepare a full report on the teacher's social media post. Perak state executive councillor for education, higher learning, youth and sports Khairudin Abu Hanipah was quoted as saying that investigations found the Facebook account to belong to a teacher serving at a secondary school in the state. The teacher sparked controversy after posting an offensive remark that went viral and caused distress to the victims' families. On Monday, a bus carrying 42 UPSI students was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's main campus when it collided with a Perodua Alza at KM53 of the East-West Highway in Gerik. Thirteen died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries in hospital. The driver, his attendant, the other UPSI students, and a family of four travelling in the Alza sustained various injuries. ends

Nearly 160,000 harmful online content removed this year, says Fahmi
Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said 57% of the removed content was from Facebook, 28% TikTok, and 13% YouTube. PETALING JAYA : Social media platforms Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube have removed 159,518 pieces of harmful content related to online gambling, scams, cyberbullying, and fake news as of yesterday, says communications minister Fahmi Fadzil. These removals were part of 174,473 takedown requests made so far this year, Bernama reported him as saying. 'About 51% of the content involved online gambling, 25% were related to scams, 12% cyberbullying, and 9% fake news,' Fahmi said at the ministry's monthly assembly. He said 57% of the removed content was from Facebook, 28% TikTok, and 13% YouTube. These three platforms account for nearly 95% of the problematic content identified. Fahmi also raised concerns about the continued presence of child exploitation content online, especially on Facebook. 'This raises questions about whether current laws and cooperation are enough, or if we need a more strategic approach,' he said, citing last year's joint operation, known as Op Pedo, between the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). On efforts to regulate social media, Fahmi noted that a new licensing framework introduced earlier this year aimed to make digital platforms safer, especially for children. He also highlighted the Online Safety Act (OnSA) 2024, passed in Parliament last December and set to be enforced soon. The Act gives MCMC the authority to act against platforms that fail to meet safety requirements. The OnSA has received royal assent from Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim and is currently being prepared for enforcement.
