New D-class RNLI lifeboat celebrations for Little and Broad Haven

Little and Broad Haven RNLI's new inshore lifeboat D-899 Swaine-Legane was officially named and handed into the care of the RNLI on Saturday, July 19.
In what the station described as 'an amazing day', the important handover was carried out by Jill Legane, one of the trustees of the Laurence Misener Charitable Trust, who kindly funded the lifeboat.

The station also received a lovely message from another trustee, Captain George Swaine, who was unable to make it on the day but partly provides his name to the new vessel.

The boathouse manager, Andy Grey, opened proceedings, before Ms Legane handed D-899 over to Jo Partner, RNLI Head of Region for Wales, West and the Isle of Man.

The station's training co-ordinator, Viv Grey, then gave a vote of thanks before Swaine-Legane launched to take part in a very special flotilla off Little Haven and Broad Haven beaches, involving the Tamar all-weather lifeboats Norah Wortley from RNLI St Davids Lifeboat and Mark Mason from Angle Lifeboat RNLI.
A Little and Broad Haven RNLI spokesman said that this was 'a truly memorable occasion and we are extremely grateful to all who helped make it such a special day.'

California plane crash: Three dead after plane crash sparks multi-agency search

The twin-engine Beechcraft, which originally took off from San Carlos airport and had three people on board, crashed approximately 200-300 yards off of Point Pinos Three people have sadly died after a small plane crashed off the California coast of Monterey County. ‌ The tragic incident happened late Saturday night at around 10.55pm when watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Monterey were informed of the crash. The twin-engine Beechcraft, which originally took off from San Carlos airport and had three people on board, crashed approximately 200-300 yards off of Point Pinos. ‌ A USCG helicopter, three Cal Fire rescue boats, and personnel from the Pacific Grove Police Department, Monterey County Sheriff's Office, San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, and Monterey Fire Department were among the multi-agency rescue effort. ‌ Flares flying into the air from the area around the plane disaster were seen on Saturday night in footage that KSBW was able to obtain to help search crews. The crash's debris has washed up on the shore and on rocks. An oxygen tank and pieces of metal that ended up down the coast were captured on camera during the incident. ‌ Witnesses have given their terrifying accounts of the moment the plane went down as the search continues. "I heard the plane flying low over my house last night, and then heard a loud pop," one woman wrote on Facebook. "Woke me up, sounded like a plane doing air show stunts over my roof then heard it hit," another chimed in. The official statement from the United States Coast Guard reads: "At 10:55 p.m. Saturday evening, watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Monterey received a relay from Monterey County detailing that a twin-engine Beechcraft, tail number N8796R, with three people on board had crashed approximately 200-300 yards off of Point Pinos. "Station Monterey launched a 29-foot Response Boat-Small crew, which arrived on scene approximately 15 minutes after notification. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector San Francisco also coordinated the launch of an Air Station San Francisco MH-65 Dolphin helicopter air crew for the initial aerial searches. An Air Station Ventura MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew was also launched to conduct a search at first light. "At 3:01 a.m. Sunday morning, the Monterey Fire Boat 12 crew located the first person on scene, unresponsive. At 5:56 a.m. a CAL Fire drone located the Beechcraft fuselage. The Monterey Fire Boat 12 crew then worked in conjunction with a commercial dive team to locate and recover the remaining two people inside the aircraft between 6:31 a.m. and 9:08 a.m., both found unresponsive." The identity of the people on board have not been made public. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash.

Lifeboat crew rescue capsized kayaker in dangerous waters after dramatic call-out

Volunteers raced from a town celebration to save a kayaker clinging to an overturned craft off North Berwick after a dramatic Saturday night call-out. A kayaker was rescued off the coast of North Berwick after being spotted clinging to their overturned craft in choppy waters. ‌ The alarm was raised at around 7.30pm on Saturday, July 26, when worried members of the public called the coastguard to report a kayak had capsized near Fidra Island. ‌ North Berwick RNLI volunteers rushed from the town's Pipe Band 125th Anniversary celebrations, sprinting through crowds on foot and bike to reach their station. ‌ They launched within minutes and, guided by Aberdeen Coastguard Rescue Coordination Centre, were on the scene in just seven minutes, reports EdinburghLive. Volunteer helm Matthew Gibbons said: 'With the glare of the low sun, and the size of the waves the casualty was hard to spot. They had also drifted about half a nautical mile from the first reported position. ‌ 'Despite being a little tired from grappling with the slippery kayak for at least half an hour, the casualty was fit and well. We thank the members of the public who called 999 for the Coastguard straight away, which enabled a swift and successful outcome for the casualty.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
