CCP holds awareness session on Competition Law for IIUI students
ISLAMABAD: An awareness session on 'Competition Law in Pakistan' was held at the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) Headquarters for the students of School of Economics, International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI).
Moderated by CCP's Deputy Director of Advocacy, Raja Taimur Hassan, the session commenced with a brief video showcasing the CCP's role, followed by a detailed presentation on Competition Law by Ahmed Qadir, Director General.
Ahmed Qadir explained the fundamental of Competition Law, including those related to the cartelization, abuse of dominant position, deceptive marketing, prohibited agreements and mergers & acquisitions, to the students. He supplemented his presentation with case studies to demonstrate practical enforcement of competition law.
He also highlighted the important role that Competition Law plays in fostering fair market practices, which are critical for economic growth.
Students took keen interest and posed numerous questions regarding Competition Law and the work of the Commission, which were addressed by the officials of the Commission.
Dr Babar Amin, Lecturer at the School of Economics, IIUI, commended the session, describing it as a crucial basis for students' comprehension of market dynamics and Pakistan's regulatory frameworks that govern and guide economic activity.

Gold prices decline further
KARACHI: Gold prices continued to fall on Saturday as world market further lost momentum, sliding under $3,300 per ounce, traders said. Local gold prices went down by Rs1,400 per tola and Rs1,200 per 10 grams following a decline in world bullion rates by $14 to sell at $3,288 per ounce. The plunge dragged down gold prices to Rs347,200 per tola and Rs297,668 per 10 grams, All Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewelers Association said. Domestic silver prices also reduced by Rs24 to Rs3,456 per tola and Rs2,962 per 10 grams. The international market traded silver for $33 per ounce, the association said. May: FBR's provisional collection over Rs935bn
ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has provisionally collected over and above Rs 935 billion in May 2025 against the assigned target of Rs1110 billion, reducing shortfall to Rs175 billion. Till now, the FBR has collected Rs10,244 billion during July-May (2024-25) period against the target of Rs 11,240 billion, further reducing the shortfall to Rs 1016 billion, according to updated revenue collection figures of the FBR late Saturday night. Minister opposes IMF demand of more taxes on agri sector
KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Agriculture Muhammad Baksh Mahar has expressed serious concerns over the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) demand to impose an 18% General Sales Tax (GST) and increase Federal Excise Duty (FED) on fertilisers, sprays, and agricultural machinery. Mahar said, 'The IMF's demand is extremely unfair and anti-farmer, which will prove disastrous for the country's agricultural sector and farmers. The IMF must refrain from proposing additional taxes on the agriculture sector.' He emphasised that farmers across the country, including Sindh, are already suffering due to climate change, water scarcity, and low crop prices. The provincial minister warned that the new taxes would lead to an enormous increase in agricultural production costs, ultimately jeopardising food security. He stated that this would trigger a new wave of inflation in the country. He strongly urged the federal government to persuade the IMF and make it aware of the importance of the agriculture sector. He made it clear, 'The IMF's demand is causing severe unrest among farmers, and we vehemently oppose any such proposal.'
