India Post's ₹5,800-cr tech upgrade unveiled
'Elated to announce the nationwide rollout of Advanced Postal Technology (APT) by @IndiaPostOffice, a historic leap in Bharat's digital journey. Backed by an investment of ₹5,800 crore under IT 2.0, APT will transform India Post into a world-class public logistics organisation,' Scindia said in a post on X.
APT is in continuation of the IT Modernisation Project 1.0, which introduced core banking solutions, core insurance solutions and digital connectivity.
'Driven by PM Narendra Modi ji's vision of Digital India & Make in India, this fully indigenous platform will: Enable real-time decision making; Boost e-commerce reach; Cut operational costs through automation; [and] Deliver citizen-first, mobile-ready services anywhere-anytime,' the minister added.
APT is expected to make services more reliable and cost-efficient, with features such as a single unified user interface, end-to-end consignment tracking with real-time SMS updates from booking to delivery, having postmen with GPS facility, QR-code payments, OTP-based delivery and 10-digit alphanumeric Digi PIN to enhance delivery accuracy.
India Post runs the world's largest postal network, with over 165,000 post offices spread across the country. The APT application has been hosted on the Union government's MeghRaj 2.0 cloud. Connectivity across the network has been enabled by BSNL. Department of posts (DoP) officials told HT the system has already demonstrated its robustness, handling nearly 3.2 million bookings and 3.7 million deliveries in a single day.
The nationwide rollout was carried out in a phased manner with 23 postal circles being divided into three groups. It began with a pilot in the Karnataka circle on May 15, 2025; and was expanded to cover around 10,000 post offices by the end of June; 15,770 offices by early July; over 86,000 offices later that month; and reached a nationwide coverage of 170,353 post offices, mail offices and administrative offices live on APT on August 4, according to the DoP.
A key part of the change was training around 460,000 India Post employees. Trainers and local champions helped pass on the knowledge across the network, following the idea of 'Train, Retrain, Refresh.' This made sure staff were ready for the new system and could continue providing services without disruption, it added.

12,000 spl trains for Bihar during festival season
Patna: Railways will run 12,000 special trains for Diwali & Chhath festivals for people coming home in Bihar from other states during the festival season. The railways has also decided to run a new Vande Bharat train from Purnia to Patna and four new Amrit Bharat Express trains from Bihar and give an experimental 20% discount on return journeys for travel between Oct 13 and 26 and Nov 17 and Dec 1, railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced in Delhi on Wednesday. Railways will lay third and fourth lines between Buxar and Lakhisarai to ease traffic on the main route. Deputy CM Choudhary thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and railway minister for giving a big gift of railways to Bihar on the occasion of Diwali and Chhath. He said on the special request of CM Nitish Kumar, in view of the problems faced by the passengers coming to and going from Bihar, the railways has decided to run 12,000 special trains. Yaduveer seeks Centre's help for crisis faced by coffee growers'
Madikeri: Mysore MP Yaduveer Wadiyar has sought the intervention of Union commerce minister Piyush Goyal to address the financial challenges faced by the Kodagu Coffee Growers' Cooperative Society. In a meeting with the minister at Delhi, Wadiyar presented a memorandum detailing the society's financial struggles and requested relief measures. The Kodagu Coffee Growers' Cooperative Society, established in 1956, supports over 12,000 small and medium coffee growers in Kodagu, Mysuru, and surrounding areas, impacting around 40,000 families and providing employment to numerous estate workers. The society has been grappling with financial difficulties since suffering a loss of Rs 6.8 crore in 1995-96 due to market fluctuations and capital shortages, he stated in the memorandum. In 2011, the society was directed to pay interest of Rs 1,55,28,034 by the Coffee Board. Although the Coffee Board offered an interest waiver if the principal was paid in 2015, the society later faced demands for additional interest payments, exacerbating its financial woes. Currently, the society is in a severe financial crisis, with losses amounting to Rs 13.1 crore, he noted. Wadiyar emphasised that paying the interest would result in the society's bankruptcy, affecting approximately 1 lakh people. He urged Goyal to coordinate with the Union finance ministry to provide compensation and assistance to prevent the society's collapse. Lack of hydrogen infra hurdle in expanding green public transport: Gadkari
Shortage of hydrogen filling stations and the lack of transportation infrastructure for the fuel are major challenges in expanding the green public transport network, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, said on Wednesday. 'In the coming days, green public transport is our future. Hydrogen buses are currently running on routes such as Delhi–Agra, Pune–Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram–Kochi. However, the biggest problem is the hydrogen filling stations and transport of hydrogen in which there needs to be a lot of work done,' he said while addressing the 24th Darbari Seth Memorial Lecture organised by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in New Delhi. Gadkari underlined the need to shift away from private vehicles by offering airline-like facilities in public transport at lower costs. He cited the example of Nagpur's flash-charging electric bus system, which he said is more comfortable and cheaper than diesel-fuelled buses. The minister suggested that municipal waste could be converted to green hydrogen to make it cheaper and more viable. Gadkari also stressed that building 'smart villages' is as important as developing smart cities. Deploying new technologies in critical areas like water, land, and forests can ensure rural growth along with creation of employment opportunities, he said. He also said India must strive to become energy self-sufficient, moving from being a net importer to a net exporter of energy. While traditional power companies are under financial stress, the expansion of solar energy and nuclear power could help strengthen the sector, he added.
