Degree admissions: Universities see renewed interest in life sciences

The Hindu6 days ago

While Commerce stream continues to dominate the admission process in Bengaluru colleges this year, there has been a renewed interest in Life Science subjects like Biotechnology, Biochemistry and Forensic Sciences this year, among students seeking admissions to undergraduate courses.
According to college managements, there have been many factors behind the renewed interest in those subjects, including peer pressure, the growth of Bengaluru as a biotechnology hub and an inclination towards pure science studies.
'There are a lot of start-ups and biotech companies growing out of the city and that provides more job opportunities to students. With universities taking an industry integrated approach, students also get to work in labs while studying these days, which adds on to their experience,' said Christo. V. Joseph, director, Garden City University.
Courses like Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) and Bachelor of Commerce (BCom), which have been attracting a lot of students over the years, have had a lot of takers this year too across colleges.
'Most seats for our BCA, BBA and BCom courses have been filled already indicating a great demand. In the post pandemic period, everyone feels that Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and Gen AI are the future and that drives a lot of students towards BCA and BTech. Even those who cannot get into BTech, now choose BBA,' said Mackey Agarwal Jain, Chief Manager- Marketing & Admissions at JAIN (Deemed-to-be-university).
Some noted that the demand for commerce is increasing due to recent graduates finding jobs quickly. 'Many of our students also clear international exams while studying and once they graduate, they find jobs quickly. Word-of-mouth spreads and they act as ambassadors for these courses,' said Melwin Colaco, registrar, St. Joseph's University.
Increased interest in media studies, law
While there has not been a significant change in demand for Humanities, universities have seen an increased interest in Media Studies, Law and Economics.
'We have always had demand for subjects like Psychology, Economics and Law. But this year, there has been a greater interest in Law,' said Anil Joseph Pinto, registrar, Christ University.
Fee increased by 5%
While the State government announced a 5% increase on the fees of degree courses in government colleges, private universities have also hiked it by an average of 5%. While some managements said that they increase it annually by about 5% to 10% based on inflation, some have increased it by 5% this year. .
'The cost of living in Bengaluru has increased and we need to pay our staff salaries to match that. Very few of our departments are aided and hence, we adopt a demand-based fee escalation,' said Mr. Calaco.

Rafale brand owner Dassault Aviation share price jumps 5% in five days. Experts see fresh momentum ahead

Rafale brand owner Dassault Aviation share price has rallied over 5.08 per cent in past five trading session on the Paris Stock Exchange. The Rafale jet manufacturer has remained volatile lately, falling over 2.30 per cent in a month. On June 2, Dassault Aviation stock closed at €322.40 apiece, only 3 per cent away from hitting 52-week high of €332.20. Dassault Aviation stock grabbed investor's attention after the Indian Air Force's Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025. Initially, the stock saw a significant surge up to 66 per cent after the Indo-Pak tensions escalated in May, however, has given up the gains. The Rafale jet manufacturer's stock has attracted significant attention following India's launch of Operation Sindoor—a strategic airstrike targeting terrorist camps situated 200 kilometers within Pakistani territory and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, while deliberately steering clear of breaching Pakistani airspace. According to multiple reports, the Indian Air Force carried out the mission using Rafale fighter jets armed with SCALP cruise missiles and HAMMER precision-guided bombs. According to market experts, Dassault Aviation's stock is on the verge of a bullish breakout from a 50-day-long cup and handle pattern, with the breakout pivot placed at ₹ 324. Anshul Jain, Head of Research at Lakshmishree Investments, believes that a high-volume breakout above €324 will confirm the pattern and likely trigger fresh bullish momentum. 'Dassault Aviation is on the verge of a bullish breakout from a 50-day-long cup and handle pattern, with the breakout pivot placed at €324. Volumes in the base have been accumulative, indicating strong institutional interest. A high-volume breakout above €324 will confirm the pattern and likely trigger fresh bullish momentum. Post-breakout, the stock is expected to head towards an immediate upside target of €375, supported by its strong price structure and accumulation,' Jain said. Meanwhile, Riyank Arora, Technical Analyst at Mehta Equities Ltd, says that a sustained move above €332 with volume confirmation may attract fresh buying interest. 'Dassault Aviation is trading near a key resistance at €332. A decisive breakout above this level could open the path toward the next resistance zone at €350-360. On the downside, immediate support is placed at €310, and if breached, the stock may slip toward the next support at €300. The overall trend remains mildly positive,' Arora said. Wealthtech startup Stable Money raises $20 million in round led by Nilekani's Fundamentum Partnership

Wealthtech startup Stable Money, which provides digital fixed-return investment products, has raised $20 million (Rs 173 crore) in a funding round led by Infosys cofounder Nandan Nilekani 's Fundamentum Partnership . Existing backers Z47, RTP Global and Lightspeed, along with Aditya Birla Ventures, also participated in the round. The Bengaluru-based company will use the fresh capital to expand its suite of wealth products and accelerate customer acquisition by strengthening its distribution, cofounder Saurabh Jain told ET. 'In the last four or five years, most of the investments have come into categories like mutual funds, stocks and crypto, and they have seen massive growth. Everybody thought that was the opportunity for India,' Jain said. 'But there is a larger segment, which is currently under-tapped. That's when we started with fixed deposits ( FDs ), and I think that segment has given us a lot of love and volumes, which is very surprising, even to us,' he added. Users can create FDs on the platform starting at Rs 1,000, Jain said. His cofounder, Harish Reddy, was formerly with the broking firm Estee. The company plans to onboard at least eight new banks and non-banking finance companies (NBFCs) in 2025. It currently has partnerships with around eight banks and two NBFCs. It also aims to broaden its marketing efforts to target underserved investors in tier-II and tier-III cities. As per its mobile application, banks currently integrated on the platform include IndusInd Bank, South Indian Bank, Slice Small Finance Bank, Ujjivan Small Finance Bank, Unity Small Finance Bank, and Suryoday Small Finance Bank. Stable Money had earlier raised $20 million across multiple rounds from investors, including Z47, Lightspeed, RTP Global, and Marshot, as well as angel investors such as Swiggy cofounder Sriharsha Majety and Titan Capital's Kunal Bahl and Rohit Bansal. Since its launch in 2022, Stable Money has onboarded more than 150,000 users, who have invested in FDs and bonds, taking its total assets under management (AUM) to over Rs 3,000 crore. The company noted that FDs remain India's most popular financial product, with over 230 million Indians holding them. The category continues to grow at the rate of 12% annually. In addition to FDs, Stable Money also offers investment products such as recurring deposits (RDs), secured credit cards, and bonds on its platform. While platforms such as Groww and Zerodha offer FDs, sovereign gold bonds (SGBs), and other fixed-income products as part of broader investment portfolios, several fintech players have also recently launched FD offerings. For instance, Flipkart-backed launched its FD product in November 2024, while payments firm MobiKwik rolled out instant FDs on its app last year. 'Stable Money is reimagining savings by building a highly trusted, digital-first fixed-income investment platform. They've blitzscaled from zero to over Rs 3,000 crore in AUM and have demonstrated 40% growth over the last three months. The team has democratised access to fixed-income products and built incredible customer love along the way,' said Mayank Kachhwaha, principal at Fundamentum. Vikram Vaidyanathan, managing director at Z47, added: 'We are seeing a generational shift in how Indians approach wealth, with a cohort of investors prioritising long-term compounding of savings over short-term gains. Stable Money has built deep trust in fixed-income products through a combination of user education, access, and a superlative consumer experience.'
