Detroit Tigers sign Andrew Chafin to minor league contract with invite to spring training
LAKELAND, Fla. — Andrew Chafin has returned to the Detroit Tigers.
The Tigers signed Chafin, a left-handed reliever, to a minor league contract Monday evening with a non-roster invitation to MLB spring training. The 34-year-old previously pitched for the Tigers in the 2022 and 2024 seasons.
The contract details are unknown.
In the 2024 season, Chafin posted a 3.51 ERA with 31 walks and 70 strikeouts across 56⅓ innings in 62 relief appearances for the Tigers (41 games) and Texas Rangers (21 games). The Tigers traded Chafin to the Rangers at the July 30 trade deadline for prospects Chase Lee and Joseph Montalvo.
He made $4.75 million in 2024.
It's unclear if Chafin, an 11-year MLB veteran, will be ready to join the Tigers as part of the 2025 Opening Day roster, but if he makes it, he would join Tommy Kahnle, Jason Foley, John Brebbia, Will Vest, Beau Brieske and Tyler Holton in the bullpen.
That scenario leaves one spot up for grabs in camp.

Chafin has pitched for the Arizona Diamondbacks (2014-20, 2023), Tigers (2022, 2024), Chicago Cubs (2020-21), Oakland Athletics (2021), Rangers (2024) and Milwaukee Brewers (2023) throughout his 11-year MLB career, recording a 3.42 ERA across 508⅓ innings in 601 games.
Chafin lives on a farm near Massillon, Ohio with his wife and kids, making Detroit a preferred destination in free agency due to its proximity to home.
He owns a 2.96 ERA in his 105-game career with the Tigers, spanning 64 games in 2022 and 41 games in 2024.

Phillies Expected to be Among 'Most Aggressive' Teams At MLB Trade Deadline
Phillies Expected to be Among 'Most Aggressive' Teams At MLB Trade Deadline originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies, after getting off to a solid start, have dropped eight of their last nine games. With questions mounting over how the team will contend for a World Series with the current roster, a new report sheds light on the Phillies' plans for the trade deadline. Advertisement Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported that the Phillies "are expected to be (one of) the most aggressive teams at the trade deadline." Nightengale also reported what the Phillies are expected to pursue: a center fielder and relief pitching. The Phillies' need in the bullpen has been clear since the beginning of the season. Jordan Romano has been subpar, and has a 7.71 ERA and 31 strikeouts across his 23.1 innings pitched. Jose Alvarado was suspended for 80 games for PEDs and will miss the postseason. Some of the other bullpen pieces, like Tanner Banks and Orion Kerkering, have flashed solid potential for the Phillies in 2025. But, they're not enough. Led by Matt Strahm, the Phillies' bullpen needs more talent, and the Phillies are expected to pursue that position by the MLB trade deadline. Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Brandon Marsh (16) prepares to bat against the St. Louis Cardinals during the second inning at Citizens Bank Streicher-Imagn Images The other position the Phillies are expected to pursue aggressively is center field. With a platoon of Johan Rojas and Brandon Marsh combining for negative 0.1 WAR, the Phillies need a new solution in center. Advertisement Rojas has been decent for the Phillies, and his above-average defense in center, combined with his elite speed, makes his spot in the lineup likely secure. Marsh, on the other hand, hasn't shown enough to deserve a place on the everyday roster. There aren't as many center field options in the market compared to the relief pitchers available, but the Phillies will still be looking to finally plug that hole, which has been open for the last five seasons. Dave Dombrowski and the Phillies front office are expected to be among the most aggressive teams at the trade deadline. They're expected to pursue center field and relief pitching, their two biggest needs through the beginning of the year. The highly touted 21-year-old made his MLB debut as the Red Sox hosted the Tampa Bay Rays Monday night. Anthony was slotted into the fifth spot in Boston's batting order for his first big league appearance. Ahead of his debut, MLB released a hype video introducing Anthony to fans nationwide: 'If you're not familiar with MLB's No. 1 prospect Roman Anthony, that's about to change.' The video opens dramatically with a voiceover introducing the Florida native to the league fans: 'Beware. Baseball's top prospect is heading to the show. Roman Anthony is here, and he's ready to rake. He has power, poise and one of the most beautiful lefty swings you'll ever see.' Advertisement Anthony, a left-handed hitter and right-handed thrower, was selected 79th overall in the 2022 MLB Draft. In 2023, he split time between High-A Greenville and Double-A Portland. Andy Pages delivers in 10th, Dodgers edge Padres 8-7 in rivals' first meeting of the season
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Andy Pages led off the 10th inning with an RBI double before scoring on Tommy Edman's single, and the Los Angeles Dodgers hung on to open their season series against the San Diego Padres with an 8-7 victory Monday night. Will Smith homered and drove in three runs in the first of seven meetings in 11 days between the Southern California rivals. It's also a rematch of their NL Division Series last October, when the Dodgers rallied from a 2-1 deficit to eliminate San Diego with back-to-back shutouts in what proved to be their toughest playoff test on the way to a World Series championship. After Pages delivered yet another clutch hit off Wandy Peralta (3-1), Edman brought him home with a fortunate bouncer that ricocheted off second base. Jackson Merrill slugged a one-out RBI double in the 10th for San Diego, but Tanner Scott finished for his 12th save. Kirby Yates (4-2) struck out two in a hitless ninth. Tyler Wade had a three-run triple for the Padres, who have lost four of six. Nick Pivetta yielded five runs and eight hits over just four innings in his second straight rough start for the Padres, while Dustin May gave up six hits and four walks over five innings for LA. Shohei Ohtani led off with a 111-mph double and scored on a double by Freddie Freeman, who had three hits. Manny Machado had an RBI double for San Diego in the first. Smith put the Dodgers up 5-3 in the third with a two-run homer, his sixth. Wade cleared the bases for the Padres later in the third with a two-out drive that Teoscar Hernández couldn't catch while sliding in right field. Key moment Hyeseong Kim had a tying double in the fifth for the Dodgers, and neither team scored again until Pages drove in Max Muncy. Key stat In front of Petco Park's usual lively bipartisan crowd for this rivalry, both starting pitchers were battered by these powerhouse lineups for 11 combined runs in the first three innings. Up next Dylan Cease (1-5, 4.72 ERA) pitches Tuesday for San Diego. The Dodgers hadn't announced the next patch on their injury-riddled rotation. ___ AP MLB:
