Cowboys WR Kavontae Turpin is arrested on two misdemeanor charges

Via CBS News Texas, Cowboys receiver Kavontae Turpin was arrested during Fourth of July weekend on a pair of misdemeanor charges.
It happened on Sunday morning, in Allen, Texas. Turpin was booked for possession of marijuana and unlawful carrying of a weapon. His bond was set at $500.
Both charges will trigger potential scrutiny under NFL policies. Marijuana doesn't result in the same punishment that it once did. However, he'll likely be subjected to enhanced testing and potential fines for positive tests. Suspensions are very rare, and very hard to earn, under the current substance-abuse policy.
Turpin had his biggest in 2024, with 420 (coincidence, not irony) receiving yards. He also was the first-team All-Pro kick returner, with 904 yards, a 33.5-yard average per return, and a 99-yard touchdown. He also had 18 punt returns for 187 yards and a touchdown.

Baltimore's gunslinger has proven time and time again that he can sling it with the best of them. See his aforementioned league-leading passer rating last season, but so many still offer the opposite opinion that he's more valuable as a rusher than a passer. Regardless of where you stand on any of that, Lamar went the route of taking the high road: Classy and the typical Lamar Jackson panache there. Pat him on the back. Please keep your fingers crossed for the rest of us. We mentioned we're annoyed with the disrespect, right? We mentioned we're confused about how Jackson keeps taking the high road, correct? How does he stay so calm when the rest of us get so bothered by this? Maybe it's the professionalism. Perhaps it is his knowledge that, when you're a starting quarterback for an NFL team, this is just part of the arrangement. Most of us probably would have answered a 'clap' by 'clapping back'—credit Jackson for avoiding turning some holiday 'cheer' into a media circus. We all understand where the jabs come from. Jackson knows that to continue validating himself, he must win playoff games and eventually a Super Bowl, but as strange as it sounds, it seems that probably wouldn't be enough to change some people's minds. No one wants to win more than Jackson. "They're going to get a Super Bowl out of me." That was the promise he made to everyone when drafted. Whether fair or unfair, postseason success and title count are the most commonly used factors in grading how well NFL quarterbacks are performing. Jackson needs to deliver on his promise. To distance himself from his peers, he needs that ring, that Vince Lombardi Trophy. Then again, the same thing can be said about Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, and Justin Herbert. How come no one disrespects them as often as the guy in Baltimore? Jackson is on the track, and attempts to discredit him as a passer are foolish. He tossed 41 touchdowns last season vs. just four interceptions. Only five quarterbacks eclipsed his 4,172 yards passing, and he lit it up through the air despite being part of the game's top rushing attack. Lamar ranks among the elite. He destroys defenses with his legs AND his arm. Now, all that's needed is that elusive Super Bowl win.

Chicago's bloody July Fourth weekend leaves 55 shot, 6 dead: report
During a bloody Fourth of July weekend, more than 50 people were shot and six killed in Chicago, a notorious hot spot for violent crime. Several mass shootings and drive-by shootings accounted for the violence that occurred between midnight on Thursday, July 3, and Sunday night, according to ABC 7, which tracked the violence. On Saturday morning alone, a mass shooter injured four, three critically, in a drive-by attack in the city's Little Village neighborhood. Several suspects inside an SUV opened fire on the victims while they sat in their own vehicle, according to the report. Hours later, two men were reportedly shot dead in separate instances. The first was a 46-year-old man who was shot dead while sitting in his vehicle in the city's Lake View neighborhood. Police have a suspect in custody in that incident, the report said. A 30-year-old man was then found dead with a gunshot wound to the head on the city's West Side. Detectives are investigating, according to the report. Within the span of minutes on Friday night, police reportedly responded to a spate of shootings, all on Chicago's South Side. A 36-year-old man identified as Marco A. Velasquez-Sierra was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head, according to the report, and nobody is in custody following that shooting. Around the same time, two unidentified male suspects opened fire on a crowd of people, injuring seven, two critically. Then, another male suspect shot a 16-year-old girl and a 35-year-old man. The girl, identified as Meeyah Smith, died from a gunshot wound to the throat, according to ABC 7. No one is in custody following that shooting. Early Thursday morning, two women were shot, one fatally, also in the city's South Side. Both women were inside a home when an unidentified male suspect allegedly attempted to rob them. After a struggle, shots rang out. The deceased woman was 29. On the same morning, a 21-year-old man was reportedly shot dead in a drive-by shooting in South Side Chicago. Thursday morning's deadly shootings were accompanied by two separate mass shootings, one that injured four, and another that injured three, according to ABC 7. According to city data, there have been 205 homicides in Chicago this year, including 170 fatal shootings. Over Memorial Day weekend at the end of May, 22 people were shot, two fatally, in the city. Seahawks need way more from Byron Murphy II in 2025
The Seattle Seahawks need sophomore defensive tackle Byron Murphy II to be more effective this season. The No. 16 overall selection in the 2024 NFL draft experienced an up-and-down rookie year. Murphy II must be a healthier, stronger player in 2025. Murphy dealt with injuries throughout 2024. The former Texas standout was limited to 457 snaps in 14 regular-season appearances. Murphy posted a 70.0 pass-rushing grade from Pro Football Focus on true pass sets. His 10% pass-rush win rate (PRWR) and 76th percentile run stop rate highlighted a balanced skill set. Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald is tasked with developing Murphy this season. John Schneider's 2024 first-round pick flashed pass-rushing upside in spurts as a rookie. A healthy, more mature sophomore version should be an effective defender in 2025.
