Italy's Mount Etna erupts as tourists visit the volcano
Groups of tourists had to seek safety on Monday, when Italy's Mount Etna, Europe's tallest active volcano erupted.
The volcano is located on the Italian island of Sicily and is a popular tourist destination with 1.5 million visitors a year, reported CNN. Many people who visit the volcano hike almost all the way to the summit.
Videos show how smoke and ash filled the air as tourists scrambled down the volcano when it erupted.
Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology Etna Observatory reported that multiple explosions of 'increasing intensity' were recorded early Monday morning, according to BBC. The mountain was spewing small amounts of fire and lava.
Preliminary observations show a 'partial collapse' of the northern flank of the volcano's southeast crater, which has produced spectacular lava flows during recent eruptions in the last few months.
The eruption began overnight and the explosions were heard as far away as Catania and Taormina which are 25 miles and 31 miles away, respectively.
None of the ash is expected to fall onto Catania which is located at the foot of the volcano, per CNN. Authorities are prepared to issue alerts for people to take cover if the wind changes.
Roads up to the volcano were closed as a way to prevent people from trying to get close to the eruptions and from disrupting first responders and emergency vehicles.
Etna is one of the world's most active volcanos, CNN reported, but it hasn't had an eruption of this magnitude since 2014. It is one of 47 volcanoes actively erupting in 2025.
Monday's volcanic activity was defined as a pyroclastic eruption which caused 'significant increase in volcanic tremor and the formation of an eruptive column containing a lethal mixture of high-temperature gases, lava grains, volcanic ash, and rock fragments of various sizes that rapidly descends down the slopes of the volcano.'
According to UNESCO, Mount Etna is one of the most closely watched and researched volcanos in the world. It has a 500,000-year history of eruptions, with 2,700 years of recorded activity.
The volcano's activity can vary from explosive eruptions to lava flows and ash emissions, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Amid speculation that people close to Donald Trump have grown weary of right-wing activist Laura Loomer, NBC News reported that she was welcomed back to the White House complex this week for her latest high-level meeting. Vice President JD Vance met [Tuesday] with the far-right activist Laura Loomer in a one-on-one meeting inside the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, two sources familiar with the meeting confirmed to NBC News. ... The meeting was first reported by CNN. Shortly after the report was published, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt acknowledged during a briefing that the vice president and Loomer did have a private discussion, though she didn't elaborate on the details of the meeting. And while it's certainly of interest to know what the two talked about, that Loomer was even offered the opportunity for high-level access is extraordinary. Loomer might not be a household name, but in political circles, she has earned an unfortunate reputation. Loomer is a right-wing activist, a failed Republican congressional candidate who has described herself as 'pro-white nationalism' and a radical conspiracy theorist who has claimed that deadly school shootings were staged and the Sept. 11 attacks were 'an inside job.' She was also a close confidant to Trump during the 2024 campaign — whose access and influence appears to have grown. Last month, for example, Loomer reportedly had a hand in derailing Dr. Janette Nesheiwat's surgeon general nomination. Around the same time, Mike Waltz was ousted from his national security adviser position after getting on Loomer's bad side. Two weeks earlier, Loomer was also reportedly involved in the firing of a U.S. attorney in California. But perhaps the most important example came to the fore in early April. It was striking enough to see the president oust several members of the National Security Council and the two top leaders at the National Security Agency, but the story became even more dramatic when the public learned that the firings came on the heels of a meeting with Loomer, who promptly took credit for the developments. The New York Times published a striking behind-the-scenes look at what transpired at the White House. Sitting directly across from the president in the Oval Office, Ms. Loomer, the far-right agitator and conspiracy theorist, held a stack of papers that detailed a litany of accusations about 'disloyal' members of the National Security Council. The national security adviser, Michael Waltz, had arrived late and could only watch as Ms. Loomer ripped into his staff. Fire them, Mr. Trump instructed Mr. Waltz, according to people with knowledge of the meeting on Wednesday. The president was furious and demanded to know why these people had been hired in the first place. The Times' report, which has not been independently verified by MSNBC or NBC News, added that the situation 'perfectly encapsulates Mr. Trump's longtime penchant for soliciting information from dubious sources. The difference now, in Mr. Trump's second term, is that he has fewer people around him who try to keep those voices away.' In a normal and healthy White House, such a cartoonish scenario wouldn't even be possible. The idea that a sitting president would not only meet with someone like Loomer but would take her recommendations about national security personnel — as the actual White House national security adviser watches helplessly — sounds like the script of an unrealistic television show. But if the Times' account is accurate, that is what happened two months ago, before Loomer was rewarded again with one-on-one access to the vice president. The Times' report from April added that during the president's first term, officials 'spent a large portion of their days blocking off people they described as 'the crazies.'' Those aides have been replaced by others who approach their gatekeeping role very differently. And therein lies the point: It is hardly a secret that both parties have fringes, but only one party offers the fringe this kind of access and influence. Week of May 26 Cable News Ratings: MSNBC Sees Positive Results in the Adults 25-54 Demo
This is TVNewser's basic cable network ranker and cable news report for the week of May 26, 2025. The final week of May was a shortened week due to the Memorial Day holiday and three networks experienced total viewer losses during primetime and total day. But MSNBC shone in the advertiser-coveted Adults 25-54 demo as the only network to record improvements versus the prior week during both dayparts. CNN, on the other hand, was the only network to experience week-to-week declines across the board. It was the network's lowest-rated week so far this year. Meanwhile, Fox News managed to finish ahead of all three broadcast networks in weekday primetime viewers. It commanded 68% of the cable news audience in primetime and 65% of the audience across total day. NETWORKS: According to Nielsen Live Plus, same-day data for the week of May 26 saw FNC average 2.289 million total viewers and 240,000 A25-54 viewers during primetime. The network experienced a -6% decline in the former category and a -5% decline in the latter compared to the week prior (the week beginning May 19). FNC averaged 1.479 million total viewers and 175,000 A25-54 viewers in total day viewing. Relative to the week prior, it was down -5% in the former category and had a flat finish in the latter. Fox News slipped to third in total primetime viewers and dropped one spot to fourth in the demo among all basic cable networks. In total day, it remained No. 1 in total viewers and held steady at No. 3 position in the demo. MSNBC's primetime lineup averaged 718,000 total viewers and 65,000 viewers in the A25-54 demo. The network was down -9% in the former category, but rose +8% in the latter compared to the week prior. During total day, MSNBC averaged 504,000 total viewers and 47,000 demo viewers for a week-to-week decline of -4% in the former category, but a +4% in the latter. Among all basic cable networks, MSNBC slid to fifth in total primetime viewers, but moved up three spots to land at No. 24 in the demo. During total day, it remained No. 4 in total viewers and slipped one spot from No. 18 to No. 19 in the demo, tied with the Hallmark Channel and MTV. CNN averaged 374,000 total viewers and 61,000 A25-54 viewers during primetime for declines of -3% and -8%, respectively. In total day, the network saw 308,000 total viewers and 49,000 viewers in the demo for respective losses of -11% and -13% in those categories. In primetime, CNN held steady at No. 14 place in total viewers and dropped five spots to the No. 27 position in the demo, tied with the Hallmark Channel. During total day, it slid from fifth to sixth place in total viewers and fell four spots to No. 16 in the demo. When looking at these networks' performance during the same period a year ago (the week of May 27, which included coverage of President Donald Trump's guilty verdict in his hush money trial): During primetime, Fox News increased by +8% in total viewers and +6% in the demo. During total day, the network saw gains of +7% in total viewers and +9% in the demo. MSNBC dropped -52% in total viewers and -59% in the demo. During total day, the network was down -48% in total viewers and -55% in the demo. In primetime, CNN dropped by -40% in total viewers and -46% in the demo. During total day, it dropped by -43% in total viewers and -34% in the demo. PROGRAMMING: Fox News had 14 out of the Top 15 spots of the most-watched cable news shows of the week in total viewers, with The Five (3.654 million viewers at 5 p.m. ET) leading the way. MSNBC's Deadline: White House with Nicole Wallace (1.066 million viewers at 5 p.m. ET) registered at No. 15. Steam and debris erupt again at Yellowstone thermal pool, webcam shows
A small hydrothermal eruption was captured on camera at Yellowstone National Park last weekend at the same site where a massive explosion destroyed a section of boardwalk last summer. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the eruption occurred at 8:39 p.m. local time on Saturday, May 31, at Black Diamond Pool in Biscuit Basin, just north of Old Faithful. It was recorded by a newly installed webcam set up on May 14 to monitor activity at the site. "It is likely that these small eruptions are a result of the hydrothermal plumbing system for the pool adjusting after the major disruption of the larger explosion last summer," USGS Scientist-in-Charge Michael Poland told USA TODAY. Hydrothermal explosions occur when superheated water rapidly turns to steam underground, triggering sudden bursts of steam, rock and debris. The July 2024 explosion at the same pool scattered boulders, destroyed nearby infrastructure and altered the shape of the pool itself. No injuries were reported. As of June 3, the parking lot and boardwalk at Biscuit Basin remain closed due to continued risk of hydrothermal activity.
