Elisa Longo Borghini secures second UAE Tour Woman title after ‘incredible' race for UAE Team ADQ

The National09-02-2025
Lorena Wiebes rounded off the UAE Tour Women with an impressive third stage victory, but it was the UAE Team ADQ's Elisa Longo Borghini who walked away as the overall winner at the Abu Dhabi Breakwater on Sunday. Borghini finished safely in the bunch to maintain her overall lead that she secured in the penultimate stage on top Jebel Hafeet for her second UAE Tour title following her success in the inaugural event with Lidi Trek in 2023. 'The first time I was just representing Italy and now I was representing both Italy and UAE, and we are pretty proud of it because in the end it's our, let's say, home race,' Borghini said. 'From the beginning of the season the team made a clear call that we had to be fit for this race but coming here and winning the GC, being second [with teammate Silvia Persco], and also getting away with a sprint classification [Lara Gillispie in the Intermediate Sprint] and the team classification is something just incredible. 'It shows how committed we were and how strong we were throughout the four days.' Winning the UAE Tour for the second time in three years the Italian pointed out the pressure on the expectations riding for the host team. 'Pressure is also coming from the trust that you can do it, otherwise they will not put pressure on you, because if they don't believe in you, they are not going to put any pressure on you,' she said. Talking about the final stage, Long Borghini added: 'We hoped for a breakaway to go, but there was no chance, so we just had to do it, and we wanted to pull the sprint for Gillespie. 'We tried and also when you have the jersey sometimes it's also better to stay in the front and to be out of the troubles and in the end, I just help my teammates.' Having kicked off the season with a fantastic result, Borghini is confident of taking the momentum forward. 'Absolutely, starting with the right foot is always nice and for sure we start in the best way possible and it's also a big boost of motivation for the upcoming races,' the winner of the Giro d'Italia Women last year said. Wiebes followed up her wins in Stage 1 and 2 with a third stage victory with a strong finish from Sara Fiorin (Ceratizit) and Amalie Dideriksen (Cofidis) in a bunch finish. 'It's nice to finally win the last stage of the UAE Tour Women and the team worked very hard for it. It was chaotic in the last kilometres,' the Team SD Worx – Protime rider said. 'I lost the train, but I found my way out and I was able to sprint. I knew that it was mostly headwind towards the finish, so I didn't want to come too early to the front. 'I felt somebody on the right and that meant it was time for my final effort. I hit something with my right knee and my handlebar with 10km to go. 'For a few kilometres I had no power in my right leg. But then it was full adrenalin. It's really nice to start the season with three stage wins … for the team it's something we can build on for the rest of the year.' The finish was marred by a pile-up in the peloton on the flat 128km route that was flagged off at Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Academy on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi and travelled through the city to finish on the Breakwater. 1. Tadej Pogačar finishes third on final Tour de France mountain stage

PARIS (AGENCIES) On the final day in the mountains at this year's Tour de France, Tadej Pogačar did not flinch in his defence of the Yellow Jersey. Finishing third across the line at La Plagne, the Slovenian did not even come under attack on the last climb, such was the pace that he set at the front of the favourites' group. Unable to put the UAE Team Emirates-XRG man under pressure on the last summit finish of the race, Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) sprinted around Pogačar for second at the line, with Ineos Grenadiers' Thymen Arensman taking a well-earned victory after his speculative attack from the GC group. The Dutch climber becomes the only rider to take a stage win in both the Pyrenees and the Alps at this year's Tour. Content to set a defensive tempo up the final climb to La Plagne, Pogačar did not chase down Arensman or follow his stage-winning attack. Instead, the 26-year-old sapped the morale of his opponents and crossed the line with his race lead remaining well more than four minutes. Only two stages stand between the world champion and a fourth Tour de France victory. As for Pogačar, the Yellow Jersey took third place on the day and will now turn his attention to the final two stages of this year's race. With an advantage of well over four minutes in the GC, Pogačar can be confident, but as he stated in his post-race interview, this is no time to become complacent. Pogačar said, 'We did a very good job until the last climb, and then some teams and riders think they can sprint the 19km of the climb. The pace was incredibly high at the start, and then I was thinking that maybe Jonas [Vingegaard] would want to win the stage also. But in the end, he was just holding on to my wheel.

The Portuguese winger powered past Conor Bradley on the left flank and squared for Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who fired home from inside the Okafor added Milan's third in the 60th Gakpo nodded in a stoppage-time consolation for Liverpool before Okafor walked in his second following a bad mix-up between Kostas Tsimikas and new Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who had rushed out of his replaced Alisson Becker in the second half, while Milan's new defender Pervis Estupinan, who joined from Brighton & Hove Albion, also made his debut. Piastri takes pole for Belgian Grand Prix sprint race ahead of Verstappen

Series leader Oscar Piastri secured pole position for Saturday's sprint race at the Belgian Grand Prix when he beat Red Bull's Max Verstappen by 0.477 seconds with a devastating record lap in his McLaren. The 24-year-old Australian, who leads the drivers' championship by eight points ahead of McLaren team-mate Lando Norris, clocked a fastest lap in 1min 40.510sec on Friday to seize the prime starting position. He was six-tenths of a second faster than Norris who was third ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, Esteban Ocon of Haas, Carlos Sainz of Williams and Oliver Bearman in the second Haas. Pierre Gasly was eighth for Alpine ahead of Racing Bulls' rookie Isack Hadjar and Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto while seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton wound up in 18th place after spinning his Ferrari in SQ1. 'That was a good lap!' said Piastri. 'I had a scare in SQ2 with the deletion of my lap, but the car has been mega all day so thanks to the team. The car is great.' Piastri's success helped him erase his disappointment at the British Grand Prix where he was handed a 10-second penalty and felt he missed out on a victory as Norris won to trim his lead in the title race. Verstappen, in his first race weekend since the exit of team boss Christian Horner, said he was satisfied with P2. 'To be there between the two of them is a good result for us,' he said. 'And I enjoyed it out there and the lap was good. The gap is big, so we have to focus on ourselves and the balance of the car.' 'This is Red Bull:' The session began in bright and breezy conditions at the majestic old circuit in the Ardennes, soon after new Red Bull boss Laurent Mekies had made his first public appearance after replacing Horner. As expected, the Frenchman told a news conference his priority was to secure the future of Verstappen. He also revealed he had been as shocked as everyone else when he received the news of Horner's exit and the job offer. 'It came in a completely unexpected way,' he said. 'It came out of the blue and I asked for time to think about it before I realised 'this is Red Bull' and so I rang them back.' As the sprint qualifying began, Verstappen remained in the garage while mechanics worked on his car. It was a minor delay and he was soon on track as Kimi Antonelli spun off at Stavelot in his Mercedes and returned via a deep run in the gravel trap. The Italian was followed by Hamilton who had a big slide off at Stavelot, just managing to stay out of the gravel before going off again at the chicane -- a mechanical problem on his Ferrari wrecking his lap and session. At the top, Verstappen managed to split the two McLarens as he had during the morning practice ahead of Fernando Alonso and George Russell. The two McLarens were first out for SQ2, Piastri once again setting the pace before his lap was deleted because he exceeded track limits at Raidillon, leaving Norris on top. The Australian had to go again as the rest joined the fray, led by Verstappen and Leclerc. A frantic finale ensued with Norris clocking a late fastest lap ahead of Verstappen and Leclerc while Piastri squeezed through in 10th. The Melbourne-native then produced a stunning third lap to secure pole for the following day. Agence France-Presse
