Saudi Arabia Urges Moon Sighting on May 27 to Mark Start of Dhu Al Hijjah
Saudi Arabia's Supreme Court has invited Muslims across the Kingdom to observe the crescent moon on the evening of Tuesday, May 27, to determine the start of Dhu Al Hijjah—the Islamic month during which the Hajj pilgrimage takes place, followed by Eid Al Adha. The Court made the announcement on Sunday, urging citizens and residents alike to look for the crescent on Dhul Qadah 29, either with the naked eye or through telescopes. Those who spot the moon are requested to report their sighting to the nearest court and offer their testimony. In addition, the Supreme Court encouraged individuals with the capability to participate in the Kingdom's official moon-sighting committees to assist in the process. These groups play a crucial role in confirming the beginning of key Islamic months, which in turn determine the dates for major religious events. If the crescent is not sighted on May 27, Islamic tradition dictates that Dhul Qadah will complete 30 days, and Dhu Al Hijjah will begin on Thursday, May 29. This would subsequently move the dates of the Hajj pilgrimage and Eid Al Adha forward by a day, with Eid likely to be celebrated on Saturday, June 7, 2025. The moon sighting holds significant importance as it directly impacts the scheduling of Hajj rituals and the celebration of Eid Al Adha, one of Islam's two major annual festivals.
