Lexus IS500 Climax Edition launched in Japan as final V8 sedan, limited to 500 units
Lexus has unveiled what is likely its last V8-powered sedan—the IS500 Climax Edition, a limited-production product for the JapanESe market. With just 500 units planned, this edition is a farewell to the brand's legendary naturally aspirated V8 engine during this time of global electrification. Priced at ¥9,500,000 (or around ₹ 51.2 lakh), this premium model brings a refined blend of performance enhancements and styling upgrades. Scheduled to arrive in Japanese showrooms in August 2025, the Climax Edition is for collectors and enthusiasts who want a part of Lexus' high-revving heritage.
Lexus IS500 Climax Edition: Design
Visually, the IS500 Climax Edition distinguishes itself through a distinctive Neutrino Grey exterior paint finish that integrates metallic flakes into a pale grey base, presenting the sedan with an understated but aggressive look. Lexus defines the color as a visual depiction of "sporty, speedy driving." Adding to its stance are 19-inch forged BBS alloy wheels in matte black, designed to combine lightweight construction with high structural stiffness.

Inside, the cabin receives a radical facelift with two-tone red and black interior trim. L-tex faux leather and Ultrasuede are applied throughout the seats, door trim, and console by Lexus, with red seatbelts and red-trimmed Ultrasuede garnish adding to the sport-luxury ambiance. Textured leather is used for the steering wheel and gear knob to remind one of Lexus's trademark premium build quality. Subtle branding elements—like a dedicated Climax Edition startup animation, laser-etched analogue clock, and badged door sills—add to the exclusivity. Lexus IS500 Climax Edition: Features and Specs
Under the hood, the IS500 Climax Edition continues to be powered by the 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8, delivering 472 bhp. While the powertrain remains the same, performance sees an upgrade with a high-spec Brembo brake package. The vehicle now comes with six-piston red calipers and bigger 380mm 'pillar fin' brake rotors instead of the standard 356mm brakes. Special-engineered rotors provide greater cooling, an important upgrade for ultra-high-performance driving.

Beyond braking, the mechanical setup is identical to the IS500 F Performance variant. The 8.0-inch TFT instrument cluster remains, now with Climax-exclusive startup graphics. Despite the emotional name, the Climax Edition is about achieving peak refinement and driving purity—true to the model's name in the performance sedan segment.

Blending ambition with friction: Is E20 revving up or breaking down?
Consumers neglected The E20 success story is now facing setbacks. As ethanol-blended petrol went mainstream, vehicle owners, especially those with older models, voiced fears about potential wear and tear on engines and reduced mileage. The petroleum ministry recently confirmed that four-wheelers designed for E10 and calibrated for E20 may experience a 1-2% drop in mileage, while other vehicles may see a reduction of 3-6%. While the government's claim of up to 6% reduction in mileage on older vehicles suggests a limited impact, consumers and some experts believe the impact on mileage to be a little higher. 'By its chemical composition, ethanol has lower energy per unit volume than petrol. This results in reduced fuel efficiency from any ethanol-blended petrol when compared to unadulterated petrol. While our internal estimate shows that E20 petrol gives 5-7% lower mileage than unadulterated petrol, primarily in vehicles manufactured before 2023, consumer feedback suggests the impact to be in double digits in real-world driving conditions,' said the head technical officer of a leading car company on the condition of anonymity. An industry expert cited that ethanol is hygroscopic (attracts water) and more corrosive than petrol. He stated that over time, this can lead to increased wear of rubber and plastic components (like gaskets, seals, hoses). He added the possibility of fuel leaks, degraded fuel pumps and clogged injectors, especially in older vehicles which are not designed for higher ethanol blends and are not maintained routinely. Automakers have also pointed to potential technical issues and reduced fuel efficiency, particularly with higher ethanol blends such as E20. In an email response to a consumer's query, Japanese carmaker Toyota stated that it is not advisable to use E20 and that usage of any fuel (other than recommended as per Owner's Manual) will void Toyota Warranty for the impacted parts. Two-wheeler major Hero MotoCorp said that vehicles manufactured before April 2023, may require modifications in the engine fuel system for it to be tuned to run efficiently on E20 fuel. 'Certain rubber, elastomers and plastic components (like gasket, O-rings, fuel tube, etc.) may need to be replaced for prolonged usage with new parts made with E20 compatible material,' it added. TVS Motor says that compared to gasoline, ethanol has different chemical characteristics, and it is corrosive to several materials that are frequently used in fuel systems. Component deterioration or damage could result from compatibility problems, it added.

The concept features a low profile, advanced aerodynamics, and hints of a powerful twin-turbo V-8 engine, suggesting a potential production model by 2026 or 2027. Engineering Speculation: Performance Underpinning While Lexus hasn't released full technical specs, the concept appears rooted in serious performance. Reports say a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, underpinned by a twin-turbo V-8 mated to a rear transaxle gearbox, suggesting a concentrated weight balance and track-ready dynamics. Design details—like the engine set well behind the front axle, large cooling vents, and hidden exhaust outlets—reinforce the track-bred engineering theme. Enthusiasts have interpreted the concept as not just a spiritual successor to the LFA, but perhaps the tip of a multi-tiered performance strategy: a GT3 racer, a Toyota-branded performance coupe, and this high-design, luxury-focused Lexus halo. The Sports Coupe will share its underpinnings with a Toyota counterpart as well.
