‘Acting smart in Maharashtra?' UP cab driver gets thrashed despite speaking in Marathi
The language dispute in Maharashtra has once again sparked tension. The issue of Marathi imposition in the state is a widely-debated issue. However, in a recent viral video, a cab driver from Uttar Pradesh is seen being assaulted by passengers. The interesting part her is the driver, despite being from UP, did know how to speak in Marathi.
The driver apparently arrived about five minutes late, and the ride got cancelled. The passengers demanded that he speak in Marathi. The driver tried. But, his fluency level did not match the expectations of the passengers, who started abusing and beating him.
The video starts with one of the passengers demanding, 'Marathi bol (speak in Marathi).'
The entire incident was caught on camera, and the 2-minute 49-second video quickly went viral. It clearly shows the passengers not just threatening the driver but also physically attacking him.
The driver was asked his name, apparently to determine his origin. The driver said, 'Umesh Kumar Jaiswal.' He also added that his ancestral home was in Varanasi.
'So, you're acting smart in Maharashtra now?' says one of the passengers.
The driver apologised for being late as he was asked to. But, his 'tone' was not impressive for the passengers.
Then starts a series of explicits in Marathi as the passengers demanded a justification for being late. The driver is asked to come out of the vehicle. When he does, he gets beaten by them.
After the video went viral, people on social media strongly criticised the incident. Users called it 'bullying in the name of language' and demanded strict action.
According to many, language is meant to connect people, not divide them.
'He knew Marathi, he was calm in the convo he even said sorry, and lastly got slapped. Got nothing but abuse! Sad it is,' wrote a Reddit user.
Another user wrote, 'They have no guts to target rich people.'
'This is how we will become a larger economy than China,' came a sarcastic reply.
"So, they don't have a problem with non-Marathi speakers, but with non-Marathi people," reacted a Twitter (now X) user.
'Maharashtra is becoming new Bengaluru,' came from another.
'Is the Indian Army fighting to protect these fools? Such people eat the country like termites,' reacted another.
'Nowadays, a very common problem but India is a democratic country so every citizen has the right to speak any language so there shouldn't be any big issue regarding language problems,' wrote one user.
The incident follows another incident involving a pizza delivery boy. Rohit Lavare was harassed by a Mumbai couple for not speaking in Marathi.
Later, the pizza delivery boy was made to apologise at an MNS office. The boy said it was all a misunderstanding. Social media, however, was not convinced.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president MK Stalin on Friday accused the BJP-led central government of deliberately delaying the national Census and orchestrating the delimitation process with a hidden agenda. Calling the Census delay 'no accident' and the delimitation exercise 'no coincidence,' he said, 'The danger I warned of is at our doorstep.' In a post on social media, he alleged: 'There is a sinister design in how the BJP-led Union Government is implementing the national Census and the subsequent delimitation. Developed states, especially in the non-Hindi speaking South, which followed population control norms, will now be punished.' He argued that states which disregarded population control for years would be rewarded with additional seats in Parliament. This, he said, distorts the federal structure and unfairly benefits neglect over progress. Stalin noted that he had already 'warned about this design' and cited senior Congress leader P Chidambaram's detailed explanation of 'how this sleight of hand is unfolding.' He said it was time to remain vigilant and prepare strategies to defend the South's representation. 'The 2027 Census will form the basis for the next delimitation, replacing the 1971 data. This gives the Union BJP government the means to restructure parliamentary representation to its advantage, at the cost of the southern states,' he alleged. While the Ministry of Home Affairs has stated that the concerns of affected states will be considered, Stalin described such assurances as vague. He insisted that the situation calls for a clear commitment in Parliament and the introduction of a Constitutional amendment. He added: 'Just look at what happened after Article 370 was abrogated. The Union government spoke of restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. Elections were held. Assurances were given in the Supreme Court. Yet, Jammu and Kashmir remains a Union Territory. This is the track record of BJP we are dealing with.' Stalin warned that if delimitation is carried out using the 2027 Census, the democratic influence of the southern states would be severely diminished. He also criticised the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), saying, 'Betrayers like the AIADMK choose to kneel before the BJP for their political survival,' but that the people of Tamil Nadu, under the DMK's leadership, would not allow the state to suffer for its developmental success.

Despite the assurance from Home Minister Amit Shah, CM Stalin asserted that a clear parliamentary commitment and a suitable constitutional amendment are what are needed to address the concerns of southern states on delimitation. 'The #Census delay is no accident. The #delimitation plan is no coincidence. The danger I warned of is at our doorstep,' Stalin said in a post on X. 'The Ministry of Home Affairs claims that the concerns of affected states will be addressed. But these are vague remarks. What is needed is a clear parliamentary commitment and a suitable constitutional amendment,' he said. The spokesperson for the Ministry of Home Affairs, in a post on X, said, 'Budget has never been a constraint for Census as fund is always ensured by the Government. HM Amit Shah has clarified on many occasions that in the delimitation exercise, concerns of southern states will be taken care of and discussed with all concerned at an appropriate time.' On Wednesday, the central government announced that the Population Census 2027 will be conducted in two phases and will also include the enumeration of castes. According to the MHA statement, the reference date for the 'Population Census-2027 will be 00:00 hours on March 1, 2027, for most parts of the country.' However, for the Union Territory of Ladakh and the non-synchronous snow-bound areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, the reference date will be 00:00 hours on October 1, 2026. ‘Treated Like Criminal': Pakistani Man Alleges Georgia Denied Him Entry Despite Valid UAE Residency

A Pakistani national with valid UAE residency alleged he was denied entry into Georgia without explanation, despite carrying all necessary documents. In a viral Reddit post, the traveller recounted being detained for over 12 hours in what he described as a 'prison-like" room at Kutaisi Airport, where he claims he was humiliated and mistreated by immigration officials. Georgia permits visa-free entry to UAE citizens and allows UAE residency holders to stay for up to 90 days. The man, who had planned a short vacation to the country with a friend, shared his experience, saying, 'We flew in from Abu Dhabi to Kutaisi on Wizz Air. We had our hotel bookings, return tickets, travel insurance — everything in order. But as soon as we said we were Pakistani nationals, the officers pulled us aside." According to the post, immigration officers took their passports and photographed them in front of other passengers. The two travellers were then taken to a separate room and denied basic information. 'When we asked why we were being held, one officer just said: 'We cannot tell you,'" the man claimed, adding, 'No reason, no documentation, no violation — just a vague statement and dismissive attitude." He said they were detained for over 12 hours in a locked room with no access to proper food, clean water, or a sanitary bathroom. 'It was like a prison," he wrote, adding that efforts to contact the UAE or Pakistani embassies were met with hostility. 'They tried to snatch our phones when they saw me trying to call the embassy." The man also shared that he holds a senior position in Abu Dhabi, has no criminal record, and possesses a strong travel history. 'We were not misbehaving. Our paperwork was complete. Still, we were treated like criminals," he wrote. 'The loss isn't just financial," he continued, referring to expenses on flights, accommodation, insurance, and rental cars, adding, 'It's the psychological toll — the humiliation, the anxiety, and the sheer helplessness." He concluded his post by calling out the officers' behaviour as 'rude, racist, and unjust," saying, 'We feel dehumanised. We will never forget this."
