Kota Belud makes debut as stopover on Sail Malaysia's Passage to the East this year
State Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, who is also Sabah Tourism Board (STB) chairman, said Kota Belud's inclusion is a fitting addition to the rally as the district is known for its horse-riding tradition.
It is also known for its strong Bajau heritage and growing reputation in community-based tourism, he said.
The annual sailing rally, which began in April, will arrive in Sabah this July with over 31 yachts and 70 participants from 15 countries scheduled to explore coastal and inland attractions from July 18 to Sept 1.
New participating countries include Lebanon, Turkey, Kuwait, Tunisia, and India, reflecting the growing global interest in Malaysia's sailing route and Sabah's diverse tourism offerings.
Bangkuai, who serves as patron of Sail Malaysia Borneo, said the rally helps promote Sabah to international travellers and strengthens its position as a culture, adventure and nature destination.
'The inclusion of new countries and destinations like Kota Belud is a promising sign as Sabah builds momentum toward Visit Malaysia Year 2026,' he said.
Sabah's growing popularity as a yachting destination is also supported by ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure, with several new berthing areas, including in Tuaran, being identified to cater to increasing interest from international sailors, he added.
Bangkuai encouraged organisers to enhance collaboration with the STB to further promote the Sabah leg as a key highlight of the entire rally.
He recently chaired a Sail Malaysia coordination meeting attended by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) and key tourism stakeholders to ensure smooth operations and safety throughout the Sabah segment.
Sail Malaysia managing director Sazli Kamal Basha said the rally follows the familiar eastern route starting in Langkawi, with Sabah stops including Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran, Kudat, Lahad Datu, Kunak, Kinabatangan, Sandakan, Tawau and Semporna.
'Participants will have the rare opportunity to sail inland along the Kinabatangan River, one of Sabah's most iconic wildlife corridors, known for its rich biodiversity and natural beauty,' he said.
He said many sailors are drawn to Sabah for its natural beauty, safe harbours and the warm welcome offered by local communities.

Malaysia sees 15.5% surge in tourist arrivals from Asean countries
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has experienced a notable rise in tourist arrivals from Asean countries, with a 15.5% increase from January to June this year compared to the same period last year, says Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing. The Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister stated in a Parliamentary reply that this growth reflected the effectiveness of Malaysia's promotional strategies and its strategic position as Asean Chair in 2025. "Tourism from our neighbouring Asean countries remains a major contributor to Malaysia's international tourist arrivals. "Asean visitors accounted for 74.3% of Malaysia's total international tourism in 2024. The number of visitors increased to 15.09 million in the first half of 2025, up from 13.06 million in the same period last year," he said in response to Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng's (BN-Tanjung Piai) question. Tiong said Malaysia's role in hosting Asean meetings boosted the country's visibility and appeal. "Our role as Asean Chair contributes to this surge, with meetings attracting delegates from across the region." When responding to Wee's additional question about challenges in tourism promotion, Tiong acknowledged budget constraints, but emphasised ongoing efforts to collaborate with the Finance Ministry to secure necessary resources. "We are exploring partnerships and optimising our promotional efforts even with limited funds," he said. Addressing an additional question from Dr Ahmad Fakhruddin Sheikh Fakhrurazi (PN-Kuala Kedah) on cross-border tourism, Tiong pointed out the importance of infrastructure development. He said there are ongoing discussions with state governments and encouraged more engagement from Kelantan in international promotions with the ministry. "Kelantan often misses these opportunities. I urge them to participate more actively," said Tiong, taking a subtle swipe at the state's lack of involvement. Tiong also responded positively to Deputy Speaker Datuk Dr Ramli Mohd Nor (BN-Cameron Highlands) about the promotion of Cameron Highlands during Visit Malaysia Year 2026. "We will assist wherever we can to promote Cameron Highlands," he said.

Sarawak eyes 5 mln tourists this year as WAK Festival kicks off

Speaking at the launch of the What About Kuching (WAK) Festival 2025 calendar at the Kuching Old Court House today, Abdul Karim said the state remains on track to meet its goal, though high airfare prices continue to pose a challenge. 'We've seen economy class fares hit RM800, and even more than RM1,000 at times. Prices are always driven by demand and supply. 'I'm looking forward to our new state airline, which could help stabilise rates. 'Apart from that, I do hope also that the airlines that are servicing now, whether it's MAS (Malaysia Airlines), whether it's AirAsia, whether it's Batik Air, they have to be considered and make sure that everything is in order,' he said. Abdul Karim stressed that flagship events like WAK play a crucial role in attracting visitors while showcasing Sarawak's rich arts, culture, and creative industries. This year's WAK, themed 'Roots', interpreted as 'We Are Kindred', will feature 49 partners, 67 events, and 369 programmes across 44 venues in and around Kuching, covering music, theatre, visual arts, crafts, gastronomy, and community activities. He noted that the festival's momentum had already begun building through its June satellite editions in Sibu and Miri, which drew strong crowds and highlighted WAK's role in uniting communities. Looking ahead, Abdul Karim said the International Dragon Boat Regatta will take place this October, featuring teams from 20 countries, making it one of the busiest tourism months for Sarawak. He urged more stakeholders and sponsors to support such events to reinforce Sarawak's position as a unique cultural destination. 'In this age of social media, even news of an isolated safety incident can spread rapidly and adversely impact our tourism image. That is why we must always remain vigilant.' Acknowledging that in recent times, Sabah has faced several safety concerns involving accidents during activities such as scuba diving, snorkelling and stand-up paddle-boarding in marine and island areas, Liew emphasised that these underline the pressing need for stronger safety protocols, strict compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and enhanced training for guides and boat operators. To address these, she asserted that the State Government has taken decisive action. 'For instance, we have strengthened collaboration with the Royal Malaysia Police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) to boost patrols and monitoring,' said Liew. Multilingual safety signage has been installed at high-risk tourist locations such as at the arrival hall of the Tawau Airport and Sandakan Airport, she added.
