East Coast's longest sled run in West Virginia opens Christmas week

Yahoo04-12-2024

DAVIS, W.Va. (WBOY) — The longest sled run on the East Coast is scheduled to open for the year just in time for Christmas.
The sled run off Canaan Loop Road Tucker County's Blackwater Falls State Park is a quarter-mile long—one of the longest in the country, but the big draw is that a 'wonder carpet' or small conveyer takes sledders to the top of the hill so they don't have to walk up it.
The run is well maintained, and tickets can be purchased for a two-hour time slot. The first day the sled run will operate this season is on Saturday, Dec. 21. By that time, multiple ski slopes in the Davis area will also be open, giving adventure seeking options for winter recreation activities in Tucker County.
Land between Canaan Valley and Dolly Sods turned into new preserve
A two-hour session on the run costs $28-33, depending on the day you go, and the run is open Thursday-Saturday, with additional operating dates around Christmas and New Year's. The sled run will be open, weather permitting, through the first weekend in March. Kids under five are free with a paying adult.
More information and ticket sale information is available on the West Virginia State Parks website.
If you're looking for other sledding experiences in West Virginia, Harpers Ferry's Tubing Hill at River Riders, which is the longest designated tubing slope in the East Coast, is already open for the season, and the tubing hill at Chestnut Ridge Park in Monongalia County is expected to open later this month.

Cloudy and showery weather stays in Mid-Michigan

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Scattered to light rain is possible over the next few days, it won't be a washout and it won't impact Sunday so you won't have to cancel any Father's Day plans or Graduation parties. We started clear and mild for our Thursday with rain to the north of Mid-Michigan. Warm temperatures continue today with daytime highs getting into the upper 70s to low 80s with mostly cloudy skies, a few peeks of sunshine is possible throughout the day as well. Heading into the afternoon and evening there is a chance for a stray shower or pop up storm that could have gusty winds and small hail. While most spots stay dry there is a chance for some isolated rain showers tonight with mostly cloudy skies and temperatures in the low to mid 50s. Heading into Friday, we continue to see scattered to isolated showers or storms with temperatures into the mid 70s. Showers could pick up Friday night into Saturday morning but still remain scattered in remains damp during the morning hours but by the afternoon it looks to dry out with temperatures into the mid to upper 70s. While Father's Day remains dry we still remain cloudy with an isolated shower or two. Temperatures return to the upper 70s to low 80s for Sunday and warm even further into the low to mid 80s into the work week with dew points making us feel a little sticky at times! Isolated afternoon showers and storms, again

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Warm and humid conditions continue this week. Expect highs near 90 this afternoon. Relief from the steamy setting should take place in the late afternoon/ early evening in the form of a shower or storm. Rain chances are about the same, if not slightly lower today than the past two afternoons. Just be mindful that any storm that does develop could produce a brief moment of heavy rain. Locally we start off dry, but heavy rain and flooding is taking place to our west in SE TX. These storms will impact western LA later today. Isolated showers are beginning to develop along the Louisiana coast. Father's day is this Sunday and rain showers, along with a few thunderstorms are still expected in the afternoon. Sunday morning will not be completely dry across the area, but much lower chances for rain occur before noon. Sunday afternoon and evening is looking pretty soggy across town. Strawberry moon makes appearance in western Massachusetts

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – A strawberry moon was seen in the sky throughout western Massachusetts. A full moon peaked around 3:44 a.m. on Wednesday, but it was also advised to check it out on Wednesday evening. The full moon appeared in hues of orange and red. The strawberry moon is the most colorful of the year as it takes a low path across the sky. The full moon's arc across the sky means that moonlight must travel through a greater portion of the Earth's atmosphere, which can give it a colorful tint. Here's where you can pick your own strawberries in Massachusetts The 'strawberry' name comes from the Native American Algonquian tribes, who lived in the northwestern United States, not the color. The Ojibwe, Dakota, and Lakota tribes also used the name to mark the wild strawberry season in June. This full moon is also unique because it appeared lower due to the Earth being in 'a major lunar standstill.' This impacts the moon's orbit around the Earth, and the last major lunar standstill occurred in 2006. In case you missed this strawberry moon, it might be partially visible on the night of July 12. The rest of 2025's full moons are expected: July 10- Buck Moon Aug. 9- Sturgeon Moon Sept. 7- Harvest Moon Oct. 6- Hunter's Moon Nov. 5- Beaver Moon Dec. 4- Cold Moon If you have any photos or videos, email us at reportit@ Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
