India will replace the skill side of it: Ricky Ponting on team's transition from Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli
Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting expressed that while replacing legendary India batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma would be a hard thing to do in Test format, they have the quality and skill in their players to cope with this massive task better than other teams. The five-test tour of England, starting June 20 at Leeds and lasting until August 2025, is set to be a heavy one for fans and players alike. With senior stars Rohit and Virat having retired from the longest format of the game, the onus lies on the Shubman Gill-led new-look Indian side to prove themselves away from home in tough English conditions and ensure that Indian cricket is safe. Several newer talents and domestic cricket/Indian Premier League (IPL) performers like Dhruv Jurel, Karun Nair, Abhimanyu Easwaran and Sai Sudharsan have earned a ticket to the UK as a part of the main squad. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Crossout 2.0: Supercharged Crossout Play Now Undo Speaking in the ICC Review as quoted by ICC, Ponting said, "It is always very hard to replace players like that that have been around for so long, that have played that much Test cricket. But if any country can do it and do it quickly, India can because of the amount of young talent that they have." "I have seen it firsthand for 10 years around the IPL, and we have seen the emergence of (Yashasvi) Jaiswal and these sorts of guys who have come into international cricket with India and done really well pretty much straight away." Live Events "The skill side of it is one thing to replace, and I think India will replace the skill side of it easily enough, but the experience is the big thing that will be missing for them. So now, even with a young captain with Shubman Gill , they will still have some experience with KL Rahul and (Jasprit) Bumrah and these sort of guys." "But I think if you look at a rebuilding sort of phase, I think India can cope with it better than most other teams," he concluded. Rohit bid adieu to Test cricket last month, and a few days later, Virat bid his farewell to the format with a heartfelt note on Instagram. Rohit made his Test debut against West Indies in November 2013 and since then, Rohit featured in 67 Tests for India, scoring 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57, with 12 centuries and 18 fifties, his best score being 212. He is the 16th-highest run-getter in the format for India. After years of up and down performances, particularly away, the start of the ICC World Test Championship as a proper tournament revived his Test career as he went on to have a prolific run as an opener. In 40 Tests during WTC history, he made 2,716 runs at an average of 41.15, with nine centuries and eight fifties. His best score was 212. He is India's top run-getter, century maker in WTC history and overall at 10th among top run-getters. Whereas, Virat first represented India in Tests against West Indies in 2011 and in the coming years, became the country's biggest ambassador for the longest format, scoring 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85 in 123 appearances, with 30 centuries and 31 fifties. He is the fourth-highest run-getter for India in Tests. He also made a massive impact as India's most successful Test captain, winning 40 out of 68 matches, leading them to numerous iconic wins overseas. As a leader, he developed a massive roster of fast bowling talent for India and was an advocate for top-level fitness and inculcated in the team a "win at all costs" attitude and ability to take on their opponents head-on.

Vancouver Whitecaps players fall ill after Mexico final; Canada coach suggests possible poisoning
Canada's men's national soccer team coach, Jesse Marsch , was outraged on Friday, June 6, that Vancouver Whitecaps players had been "poisoned" during their trip to Mexico for the CONCACAF Champions Cup final. Earlier, the Whitecaps released a statement on Thursday indicating that approximately half of the 75 individuals who returned to Vancouver on the team's charter plane after Sunday's game reported experiencing symptoms of a gastrointestinal illness . He addressed the issue and said that the team is monitoring the players' conditions and considering necessary adjustments. 'We're still in the evaluation phase,' Marsch said during a press conference. 'We know some players have been sick after the trip to Mexico. We're trying to gather information and ensure everyone is ready, but health comes first.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The price of dental implants may surprise you Dental Implants | Search Ads Search Now Undo Marsch admitted that he had no evidence of poisoning but added that, "It's not random that two years in a row that this has happened." Vancouver arrived in Mexico City last Friday and faced a heavy defeat, losing 5-0 to Cruz Azul in the final of CONCACAF's elite club competition on Sunday. The players reportedly began experiencing symptoms of gastrointestinal illness shortly after returning from the match. Live Events The exact cause of the illness has not been publicly confirmed, but the timeline suggests a likely link to their stay or travel conditions. While no specific number of affected players has been disclosed, multiple members of the squad were said to be unwell. The timing of the outbreak has raised concerns for Canada's national squad ahead of their World Cup qualifiers. Some of the Whitecaps players are regulars or contenders for national team call-ups, and their illness could affect Marsch's lineup plans. The coach highlighted that we have contingency strategies in place. Marsch added that we have a larger player pool to work with. However, we need to be mindful of recovery timelines and don't want to rush anyone too soon. This incident has prompted discussions around travel protocols and food safety for players traveling internationally. Teams often face different hygiene standards when playing abroad, especially in countries with varying water quality or food handling practices. Experts point out that gastrointestinal illnesses are not uncommon in high-travel sports environments. 'It's part of the risk when you travel, especially for international tournaments,' said a former national team nutritionist, who noted that strict controls over food and water intake are typically recommended. The Vancouver Whitecaps have not issued an official statement detailing the extent of the illness but confirmed that health precautions were being followed.

India vs England: Ricky Ponting backs Shubman Gill as Test captain, suggests ideal batting spot
Shubman Gill Ricky Ponting has weighed in on India's upcoming Test tour of England and the appointment of Shubman Gill as captain, calling it a "smart and timely" decision as the team transitions into a new era following the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from the longest format. Speaking to The ICC Review, Ponting praised the 25-year-old Gill for his calm leadership and strong batting credentials, both of which he believes will serve India well in a challenging five-Test series starting June 20. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "I actually think it's the right move," Ponting said. "There's been talk about why it wasn't Bumrah or Pant, but Bumrah's injury history makes it tough. You can't have your captain missing matches. Shubman's young, he's a regular, and most importantly, he's scoring runs." Poll What are your expectations for India's performance in the upcoming Test series against England? They will dominate. They will struggle. It will be a close contest. I'm not sure. Ponting, who observed Gill's leadership at Gujarat Titans during IPL 2024, believes Gill has grown into a natural leader. However, he feels moving Gill away from the top of the order may help him focus on captaincy duties. "Not having to open or bat at No.3 might ease the burden," Ponting said. "I see Sudharsan and Jaiswal opening. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Tired of High Power Bills? Gautam Gambhir sends stern message after Bengaluru tragedy Ponting also acknowledged the massive void left by the exits of Rohit and Kohli but expressed confidence in India's depth. "If any country can rebuild quickly, it's India," he said. "They've got an abundance of young talent. Players like Jaiswal and Sudharsan have already shown their quality." He was especially optimistic about uncapped left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh . "I'd play him from the first Test," Ponting said. "He's skillful, he's played County cricket, and the Dukes ball will suit him. That left-arm angle adds variety."
