ONE of the world's biggest car brands is reportedly planning a huge wave of cuts worth a staggering £1.3 billion.
The shocking moves comes as the company battles with its worst annual loss in a quarter century - forcing it to axe a whopping 20,000 jobs.

In April 2025, Nissan confirmed that it was anticipating losses of up to £4 billion.
Just a year ago, the company reported an income of £2.3 billion - meaning that savings had to be found urgently to save the firm.
The alleged £1.3 billion in cuts, as reported by Autonews, only scratches the surface of the anticipated losses.
Nissan is aiming to have completed its £1.3 billion cost-cutting mission by 2026.
The remaining loss will be plugged by a huge wave of closures.
Nissan Motor previously announced in November that it would be cutting 9000 jobs but the manufacturer has now been forced to go even further.
The additional 11,000 cuts will affect staff and contractors across huge swathes of the company.
Areas including sales, research, administration, development and manufacturing are all expected to be hit hard by the cuts.
However, the company has not confirmed which factories are due to shut.
The brand hopes to reduce its total number of factories from 17 to 10 by 2027 - saving £2.6 billion in the process.
Further measures - in the form of changes to its supply chain - will also be taken to cut costs.
Work on "advanced and post FY26 product activities" has been paused too, though the company is hoping to launch a new version of the Nissan Skyline.
Ahead of the cuts, Nissan's new chief executive Ivan Espinosa said: 'In the face of challenging full-year 2024 performance and rising variable costs compounded by an uncertain environment, we must prioritise self-improvement with greater urgency and speed, aiming for profitability that relies less on volume."

He added: 'As new management, we are taking a prudent approach to reassess our targets and actively seek every possible opportunity to implement and ensure a robust recovery.'
The car company was hit hard by the effects of Donald Trump's tariff war, which saw a huge 25 per cent charge being slapped on US car imports.
However, other car brands have also been battling the effects of Trump's tariffs.
45 per cent of America's cars are imported, with European manufactures like Volvo and Japanese producers like Mazda building almost half of the nation's cars.
However, Prime Minister Keir Starmer signed a deal with Trump which slashed the 27.5 per cent tariffs down to just 10 per cent - for the first 100,000 vehicles sent across the Atlantic.
The UK exports roughly that number to America each year, meaning business executives including JLR boss Adrian Mardell have welcomed the deal.
Mr Mardell said: 'The car industry is vital to the UK's prosperity, sustaining 250,000 jobs. We warmly welcome this deal.'
Also, luxury car brand Aston Martin saw its shares jump by 14 per cent after the deal was signed.

The first major factor is rising online car sales which are beating in-person sales at dealerships.
With an extensive range of comparison and second-hand sites to chose from, may car buyers don't even step foot into a dealership anymore.
Secondly, the actual cost to physically run the sites has soared.
Rent, wages and energy bills have all been increasing for roughly the past five years, putting many out of pocket.
Car manufacturing across the globe was also hit by a semiconductor chip shortage in 2022 which made it difficult to produce new motors.
The high demand with limited supply created a backlog, which although has eased, is still having an impact on the industry.
A third reason for recent closures is the shift to electric cars.
They are becoming more popular, given the Government initiative to be Net Zero in 2050.
The industry is also affected when companies merge or are bought by rivals.
This may lead to some independent names falling victim to the ongoing spate of closures.

As real a truck as any other I grew up in a 'real truck' household. We've had our share of SUVs, some classic muscle cars, and a few motorcycles every now and again. But one thing my family always had at the ready was a 'real' truck. A large pickup truck was always in the driveway, parked at the curb, or in the garage to help my dad complete his next crazy project. It only has a 3.5-liter V6, it was AWD instead of 4WD, the bed is only 64 inches (just over five feet, for those who don't like math), the towing rating is only 5,000 lbs, and it costs only $45,380 MSRP. If you look at the front end, it's identical to the Pilot. So, essentially, my brain was telling me, 'It's just a Pilot with a bed attached to it.' I'll admit, I went into reviewing the Honda Ridgeline Trailsport a bit prejudiced. I remember the memes posted on truck pages about them. I'm here to admit I was wrong. Very, very wrong. It's so much more than that. 2025 Honda Ridgeline TrailSport — Source: Kristen Brown By definition, it's almost a 'real' truck If you ask Google, 'What's the proper definition of a truck,' you'll get a few different answers, but the most common are: it's designed to prioritize hauling goods over people, it has a body-on-frame construction, and has a decent towing capacity (to fit within the whole 'hauling goods' frame). The only criterion the Honda Ridgeline Trailsport doesn't meet is the body-on-frame rule—it's a unibody frame. This is fine for a truck of that size since it can help keep it rigid, reduce overall weight, and improve ride quality. So, while it's not as rugged and tough as a Ford F-150 or a Ram 1500, towing 5,000 pounds is a respectable amount for that segment. The Ford Ranger has a towing rating of around 7,500 pounds when properly equipped, and the Toyota Tacoma can tow up to 6,500 pounds under the right conditions. Compared to its competition, it's right within that sweet spot of being bulky enough to be used for most truck things, but not so tough that it's a chore to drive. The Pilot has a double overhead cam engine. The transmission isn't the same, either. It's a nine-speed automatic, while the Pilot is a 10-speed, and it's a tougher automatic. It can be cleverly tuned to be more mileage-friendly in 'Eco' mode, it can be more aggressive in 'Sport,' and of course, 'Towing' helps employ all the torque it needs to tow whatever's hooked up. There are a few terrain settings to choose from, too, like Snow, Sand, and Mud, and it's ready to go thanks to General Grabber A/T truck tires from the factory. It has literally everything to make it as close to a real truck as possible, without sacrificing the niceties of the Pilot SUV, including leather seats, a heated steering wheel, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, an updated and surprisingly punchy sound system, and heated seats. The Ridgeline is a good fit for just about anyone, even parents Since it shares so much Pilot DNA, the Ridgeline TrailSport was pretty cozy, especially from the driver's seat. The rear seats were a little tight, but both the front and the rear-facing car seats were fairly easy to install. Be aware, though, that securing the upper tether is a bit of a task with front-facing seats. The piece you click the tether onto is actually underneath the seat, and you have to route it behind the backrests to secure it. It took me a while to figure it out (I'll admit it—I looked it up on YouTube). The rear-facing seat, though, was a piece of cake. Once both seats were installed, getting them in and out of the Ridgeline was a breeze. My youngest loved having the rear sliding window open, too. My oldest, naturally, loved riding up high and waving at everyone through the big windows. 2025 Honda Ridgeline TrailSport — Source: Kristen Brown As a parent, I loved all the clever storage bins and cubby holes, as well as the different ways the truck could be configured. The rear seats can be folded up and out of the way or removed completely to provide more storage space. The center console and glovebox are a lot deeper than you could imagine, making it easy to keep things away from grabby toddlers. My favorite storage compartment, however, was the storage cubby in the bed. The entire week I had it, I used it to keep my groceries in it since my rear seats were occupied by my children's car seats, and it's such an underappreciated feature. It was especially comforting to know that if my gallon of milk were to spill, which it wouldn't, since it's contained as opposed to sliding around in the bed, there's a drain plug on the bottom I can open up. If it rains, thick and robust weatherstripping would keep water out, and the all-weather flooring throughout made it easy to clean up after my kids. If it's not being used to haul groceries, it could easily be used to store camping gear, and it would be safe there because that compartment can lock. Pictures don't do it justice, either. It has a volume of 7.3 cubic feet, measuring 43 inches long, 15.5 inches wide at the bottom, and 15.25 inches deep. So, you can store a bunch of stuff in the bed and still have cargo in the storage compartment. Honda says you can even stuff it full of ice and use it as a cooler, thanks to the drain plug. There are bag holders inside it, too, or guides for dividers. If you have trouble opening it once it's locked, it's easy to access if you open the bed horizontally instead of vertically. 2025 Honda Ridgeline TrailSport The bed is quite crafty, too. When I had the Ridgeline, my husband and I used it to haul a few things to the dump. Every time my husband thought, 'There should be a tie down here,' there was one, since there are eight throughout the entire bed. He was impressed by how thoughtfully designed the bed was, and found it incredibly easy to place and secure items in the bed compared to bigger trucks, due to its lower ground clearance and entry point. The anchor points for a camper shell were obvious, and the bed even features a 150-watt/400-watt outlet for tools, electronics, or, if you're camping, electric grills or lights. Honda offers a plethora of roof or bedtop accessories for your bikes. kayaks, skis, and even rails to stretch across the bed to accommodate a tent. All these features show that the Ridgeline can fit within any lifestyle. No wonder they're incredibly popular in Bend, Oregon. It was great off-road, too The best privilege of living in Central Oregon is how many trails are at my disposal. After a 30-minute jaunt, the TrailSport was off the road and gliding through the region's silty, light brown sediment. The torque-vectoring AWD system in the Ridgeline TrailSport is responsive and effective, and the all-terrain tires inspired a lot of confidence once the going got tough. While it was off-road, it was also impressively comfortable. My youngest daughter fell asleep on the way to my favorite trail to test cars on, and she wasn't jostled awake once. Once on the trail, the Ridgeline rode much smoother than I expected. It doesn't have electronically adjustable suspension, but the TrailSport trim does feature retuned suspension compared to other trims, and it was smooth enough to keep your spine intact, but stiff enough to not translate the knocks and bumps back into the cabin. Both my husband and I enjoyed it. 2025 Honda Ridgeline TrailSport — Source: Kristen Brown The Ridgeline has a ground clearance of 7.6 inches, which is moderate compared to its competition. It's not made to rock crawl or cross deep water, but it would be excellent to use it the way I did—perusing local trails, or heading to a campsite that's down a mild dirt or gravel road. It's not meant to tackle the same trails as a Jeep Wrangler, but I'd definitely put it in the same league as my Subaru Forester, which handled some surprisingly tough trails. The Ridgeline did everything I asked it to, and it proved to be more than capable (and flexible!). Like other off-road-ready trucks in the segment, the Honda Ridgeline has cameras on the side mirrors, the grille, and the tailgate as part of the Multi-View Camera System (MCVS) that are engaged when you select one of the terrain modes. The newest car I own is from 2011, so I don't utilize these cameras on a regular basis, and for the Ridgeline, I feel like the only camera needed is for the tailgate. The seating position is high enough to see the corners of the hood, it's easy to know where your tires are, but the bed's blind spots are, well, blind. For larger cars like the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the cameras were a must. Not in the Ridgeline. But, it's nice to know they're there if you don't have a spotter. The price compared to what you get is hard to beat As I mentioned before, the Ridgeline Trailsport is priced fairly. It starts at $45,380, which puts it ahead of the competition monetarily. The Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter, for instance, starts close to $56,000 (though the TRD Off-Road is closer to $44,000), the Ford Ranger Lariat starts at just over $47,000, and the Chevy Colorado ZR2 has a price just shy of $50,000. The Jeep Gladiator Rubicon is closer to $56,000. There are more affordable options, like the Hyundai Santa Cruz XRT or the Nissan Frontier PRO-4X, but you don't get nearly as many features as you do in the Honda. 2025 Honda Ridgeline TrailSport — Source: Kristen Brown I only had the Ridgeline TrailSport for a week, but every time I thought, 'If only the truck had [feature],' the feature showed itself. After using it as both a truck and an SUV, it's the perfect middle ground between the two categories. You get the comfort and conveniences of an SUV, but the utility and craftiness of a smaller truck. It's a potent option for those who have truck-ish needs, like hauling bags of feed, flower pots, the occasional run to the dumps, Goodwill donations, bikes, camping gear, or for moving. It would be great for hauling a small camper, too, since most people don't usually haul more than 3,500 pounds, even with 'real' trucks. Final thoughts As someone who actively participated in Honda Ridgeline slander in my youth, I learned that there is so much more to the Ridgeline than what meets the eye. It's an incredibly versatile, willing, clever, and capable little truck. It's not going to move mountains for you, but it'll get you there and back without any hiccups, and carry all of your gear and passengers comfortably. My husband, who has never ridden in a Honda Ridgeline before, noted that it's a great gateway drug to the world of trucks. The Ridgeline is the perfect way to dip your toes into the truck world, and once you're comfortable enough to swim, you can upgrade to the F-150 or Ram 1500. It's best for those 'truck curious,' if you will. ANDREW PIERCE: Is Angela Rayner's hard-Left boyfriend plotting to put her in No 10 as revenge for his sacking by Starmer's ruthless right-hand man?

On the eve of the Government's difficult Spending Review, Angela Rayner was in surprisingly high spirits. Drinks were flowing as the Deputy Prime Minister held court, acting as the DJ playing loud 'house music' while her guests danced the night away. Rayner's office has refused to confirm whether a party took place in her resplendent grace-and-favour apartment in Admiralty House, once the home of Sir Winston Churchill, the night before the Housing Secretary received one of the biggest financial packages of the Spending Review. Rayner had to battle to the bitter end against Chancellor Rachel Reeves, but the outcome fell in her favour and is a sign of her growing influence. In recent weeks, there have been reports of Rayner limbering up to replace Keir Starmer as Labour leader, and she has solid backing from members of the soft-Left, as well as the unions. Her victory in the Reeves negotiations is a clear sign that Downing Street is trying to keep her on side. Little wonder, then, that she indulged in raucous celebrations hours before the Chancellor addressed the Commons, reviving memories of when she was photographed belting out songs behind the DJ's desk in an Ibiza nightclub last summer. When Rayner, 45, took her place on the benches for the Spending Review, many thought she looked somewhat jaded. The same was said of Blackpool South MP Chris Webb, who was at the party and is one of her closest friends. A source told me: 'They were celebrating the fact that Ange had won her deal on the Spending Review. She is feeling on top of the world. The settlement showed that Ange is a serious player. Tarry, 42, has never got over being sacked as a shadow minister in July 2022 for giving a TV interview while on a picket line during a rail strike 'It may look insensitive but it was a private party for a small group of friends and supporters. These party guests will run an Angela Rayner leadership campaign if and when the time comes.' Rayner's ebullience was in stark contrast to the downbeat demeanour of the dwindling band of Reeves supporters. Her stock has fallen to rock bottom among Labour MPs and members. And Rayner's soiree will only heighten suspicions in the Downing Street bunker ahead of a potential crunch Commons vote on reforms to disability benefits. As many as 200 Labour MPs are said to be deeply unhappy about Reeves's plans to make £5 billion of cuts. In public, Rayner says she has no interest in becoming Labour leader. In private, however, I can disclose that many of the party-goers on Tuesday night are working hard to bolster her support among MPs and party members. Some MPs have dubbed the less-than-covert Rayner campaign Operation Revenge because it is being masterminded by her boyfriend Sam Tarry, 42, who has never got over being sacked as a shadow minister in July 2022 for giving a TV interview while on a picket line during a rail strike. Later that year, he was deselected as the MP for Ilford South. Tarry, who was part of Jeremy Corbyn's leadership team, blames his downfall on Starmer's all-powerful chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney, who wants to purge the party of Left-wingers. Revenge is a dish best served cold, they say, and Tarry is pushing for Rayner to be the first elected woman leader of the Labour Party. In the run-up to the election, Rayner ruled out a tilt at the top job because she knew Labour was destined to win big and assumed that Starmer would be a fixture in No 10 for years. Since he became PM, however, support for Labour has collapsed faster than that of any newly elected governing party in the past 40 years. Starmer's personal rating is a woeful minus 46 per cent. And Rayner is popular where it counts – with party members. In a poll by independent party news website LabourList, she came second to Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, who is not a leadership contender after his disastrous election defeat in 2015. What's more, many Labour MPs believe they must elect a woman for the first time in the party's 125-year history. Even Rayner's many detractors, who scorn her intellectual ability, concede there is no serious alternative contender. Rachel Reeves and Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson have crashed and burned in the eyes of voters. Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham, another favourite of party members, does not have a Commons seat. And Health Secretary Wes Streeting's majority was cut to 550 by an independent Muslim candidate standing on a pro-Gaza platform. Many suspect he will lose next time. The man who helped Rayner avoid a similar fate is her close friend Wajid Khan, a former mayor of Burnley. He was instrumental in ensuring no independent Muslim candidate stood against her in her Ashton-under-Lyne constituency in Greater Manchester, which she won with a 6,700 majority over Reform. To the surprise of many, Khan – who was elevated to the Lords by Starmer in 2020 – became Rayner's deputy minister in the housing department. 'Khan was repaid with a ministerial job and he is now repaying her in turn by working discreetly on her behalf,' says a supporter. 'He will be a hugely important link to the Muslim vote which Labour is losing under Starmer.' All of which helps explains why Rayner has come round to the idea that, if Starmer goes, she should run. It explains, too, last month's leak of a memo from Rayner to the Chancellor outlining her alternative money-raising measures, arguing for higher taxes on wealthier people and cutting benefits for migrants. Whoever leaked it – and Rayner's team say it wasn't them – had one purpose: to cast her in a positive light with the MPs and party members who will choose the next leader. Some MPs say the leak fired the starting gun on a long race to succeed Starmer, which is why it caused such anger in Downing Street. Days later, Rayner had to fight her corner behind the scenes after reports that Starmer would strip her of the housing element of her brief. Flame-haired Rayner is unashamedly combative and, according to a source, 'there was a lot of shouting'. A darling of the trade unionists, she has the personality to build bridges across the party. Rayner was the special guest at Tony Blair's Christmas drinks last year. She is also close to Gordon Brown and her boisterous birthday karaoke parties are well attended by the Right and Left in the party. A Rayner associate says: 'If you're a working-class woman like Ange, who is always being written off by the men in the Downing Street bunker, what better way to prove them wrong than by seizing the top job?' Rayner famously left school aged 16, pregnant and without any qualifications. Her political hero was former Labour deputy prime minister John Prescott. 'Some say she's Prescott in a skirt,' says a supporter. 'Like Prescott, she speaks the language of ordinary voters. She understands them the way the metropolitan elite around Starmer don't. If there's a leadership election tomorrow, she wins hands down.' Downing Street is aware of the manoeuvring. It may be why, in the past few weeks, Rayner has lost her personal photographer, Simon Walker. 'No 10 thought she was getting too big for her boots, so they grounded her photographer and have now taken the post away altogether,' a source told me. A source close to Starmer says: 'You can't blame them for reining her in. Keir leads a stable government, a disciplined party, and knows what he wants. Ange would be woefully out of her depth as PM. She's not up to it and MPs know it.' But Rayner is indifferent to the barbs. She thinks she's on a roll and, judging by the mood of her party guests, they think the same.

Three trade union leaders have been included in the King's Birthday Honours for services to areas including education and green jobs. Dave Ward, long-serving general secretary of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) is made a CBE for services to trade unions, and Dr Patrick Roach, who recently retired as general secretary of the NASUWT teachers' union is made a CBE for services to education. Sue Ferns, deputy general secretary of the civil service union Prospect, is made an OBE for services to green jobs and workplace transition. Mr Ward has been general secretary of the CWU for a decade, leading the union through the privatisation of Royal Mail and recent sale of the postal giant to Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky. He started work as a messenger boy at Tooting delivery office in south London before becoming a union rep, holding several positions before succeeding Billy Hayes as general secretary in 2015. He is married with four children, supports Chelsea and is a keen blues guitarist. He told the PA news agency: 'The New Deal for Workers campaign was founded and led by the CWU. 'At a time when society has never been more unequal the trade union movement pushing Labour to turn this campaign into a new Employment Rights Bill could not have been more important. 'This honour is recognition of our union's work in this area and for the way we stand up for postal, telecom, financial services and tech workers across the UK. 'I joined the GPO as a telegram boy in 1976 and it is a privilege to now be the general secretary of a union that campaigns for our members in and out of the workplace. 'We now need employers and the Government to go even further in rebalancing workplaces and society. We will continue to lead this.' Dr Roach stepped down as NASUWT general secretary in April after five years. The son of Jamaican immigrant parents, he grew up in Walsall, West Midlands, in the 1970s, and has described how he faced racism at school on a daily basis. He is married with two children. He was a teacher of politics and sociology in further education and was a researcher and lecturer in education, social policy and equalities in higher education. He later joined NASUWT and headed the union's education and equalities work before becoming assistant general secretary and then deputy general secretary. He has served in a number of voluntary roles as a school governor and in supporting the provision of supplementary education for African Caribbean children. Dr Roach became head of the union in 2020 at the start of the first national lockdown, leading union members in uncharted territory as schools and colleges, teachers and headteachers adapted to one of the most challenging post-war periods in education. As head of the TUC's anti-racism taskforce, Dr Roach was instrumental in leading Britain's trade union movement in challenging racism and injustice at work. He told the PA news agency: 'I am humbled and incredibly proud to be granted this honour. 'It has been my privilege to have been afforded the opportunity to devote my career to education and in the service of NASUWT members, teachers and headteachers, whose commitment, work and dedication every day continues to inspire, shape lives and make a world of difference.' Sue Ferns, who has also been a member of the TUC General Council since 2005, grew up in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, and was the first member of her family to go to university, studying industrial relations at Salford University. After graduating in 1982, she started working for the TUC's economics department. She joined Prospect in 1993, becoming head of research in 2002, director of communications and research in 2013, and senior deputy general secretary in 2018. She has campaigned on issues including the gender pensions gap, workers' rights in the science, engineering and energy sectors, and clean energy. She has taken part in several government taskforces and working groups, particularly on clean energy jobs and workforce skills. She told the PA news agency: 'I am privileged to have spent my career in the trade union movement, determined to make a positive difference to the lives of working people. 'I'd like to thank the countless colleagues, trade union representatives and members within our movement, whose commitment to improving the lives of others has been an inspiration throughout my career.'
