'Art is life': Motto of Soweto centre for vulnerable children that heals hurt through creativity

TimesLIVE18-07-2025
'We want to ensure that every child who comes here lives a normal life,' says Mlungisi Mvelase, manager of the Rena Le Lona Creative Centre for Children in Diepkloof, Soweto.
He leads a team that provides vulnerable children with the space and tools to sing, dance and act as they work on development goals.
'Art is life,' the centre states in a Facebook post describing its work.
Mvelase strongly believes in nurturing and healing of emotional traumas through art therapies.
'It's our calling to make a difference in these children's lives and in the lives of their families and guardians.'
The centre is more than an after-school programme, it is also a sanctuary for children vulnerable to hunger and poverty, grieving orphans and those exposed to violence at home and in the community.
Many are raised by unemployed single mothers, elderly grandparents or foster parents who are struggling financially.
One of the beacons of hope is Amanda Ntlapo, a care worker and teacher at the centre who once walked the same path as her students.
'The children come in with heavy stories. Sometimes they haven't eaten, sometimes they're overwhelmed by what is happening at home. But through the arts, they smile again. They come alive.
'Through drama, kids express their struggles, pains and ekasi life. The centre tries to provide a safe and nurturing environment where every child feels like they have a brother or sister. We try to comfort them, show them love.

Afrika Tikkun celebrated its talent day at DP World Wanderers Stadium

Smiles, cheers, and jubilation filled the DP World Wanderers Stadium on July 26 during Afrika Tikkun's talent day. The talent day is a chance for 3 000 children from different Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres around Gauteng to come together to show their talents. Afrika Tikkun is a South African non-profit organisation transforming the lives of children and youth from cradle to career. Also read: Scouts welcome Johannesburg Children's Home for weekend of fun and friendship The talent day was made up of sporting activities, including netball, soccer, running, and dance competitions. Afrika Tikkun's CEO, Marc Lubner, explained that although there were prizes for winners, every single child present would receive a prize. 'The Talent Day Initiative started approximately 12 years ago; we were a much smaller organisation. We've got a new group that's here today from Marikana, which is part of our latest outreach programme.' Lubner added that the NPO has begun to engage with children with disabilities in an inclusion programme. 'So rather than keeping the disabled children separate, we involve the children in mainstream.' 'Rich Hilton College parents': TikToker mocks SA's most expensive school

A popular schoolboy rugby TikTok account has mocked the parents of Hilton College, who recently came under fire over their 'flashy' display of wealth at a recent derby day. The KwaZulu-Natal boarding school is the most expensive school in South Africa, with an annual tuition of close to half a million rand. On TikTok, the popular fitness and schoolboy rugby account @adafitfans took a jab at Hilton College's recent headlines. The account posted an AI-generated skit of parents of the most expensive school bragging about splurging cash on designer tents, helicopters, and even comparing themselves to the Springboks. Take a look… @adafitfans Who's next? #hilton #hiltonparents #adafit #schoolboy #schoolboyrugby #rugby #fyp #fyppppppppppppppppppppppp #humour #fypシ゚ #rivalry ♬ original sound – adafitfans In May, Hilton College George Harris scolded parents of learners in the school in an open letter for their 'extravagant' display at a derby day against Michaehouse. This included hiring five-star hosting and catering services that showcased lavish displays of food like sushi, biltong, and couture cakes. The principal also criticised the parents for not cleaning up after the events. He wrote: 'When hospitality and generosity became self-serving displays of opulence, and began to pull away from what we aspire to be as a community. The principal added: 'Next year, can we ditch the opulence in favour of a wholesome hospitality devoid of showmanship and loud extravagance?. 'When the extravagance stretches into overconsumption, the message we send to our children is wrong'. Hilton College came under fire over its recent rugby derby day.
