Kite string slits neck of man on flyover near Tughlakabad in Delhi, condition critical

A 30-year-old man sustained critical injuries after his neck was allegedly slit by a manjha or kite string while he was on a flyover near Tughlakabad Metro station on Saturday evening.
The incident was reported around 4.40 pm on the carriageway connecting Sarita Vihar to Faridabad.
The victim, Rajneesh from Akhibelpur village in Uttar Pradesh's Hardoi district, was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where his condition remains serious, police said.
'He was found bleeding heavily from the neck… Preliminary investigation suggests that he was injured from red manjha or a kite string,' said DCP (South East) Hemant Tiwari.
This comes amid the Delhi Police Crime Branch mounting a crackdown against the sale of the banned Chinese manjha – a synthetic, glass-coated kite string notorious for causing grievous injuries and deaths in the city during the festive season.
In the run-up to Independence Day, police said they had arrested three men for allegedly selling Chinese Manjha and recovered 68 rolls from their possession.
Police said that in a raid carried out on Thursday in North East Delhi's New Seelampur, two persons – Ashu (22) and Imran (22) – were arrested and 18 rolls of plastic-based Chinese manjha seized.
The same day, the Inter-State Cell of the Crime Branch raided a shop at Sangam Vihar in Wazirabad, where 50 rolls of the string were recovered from Mohammad Saaqib (35). He too was arrested.

Man dies hours after kite string slits his neck on flyover in Southeast Delhi

A 30-year-old man, who was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre on Saturday after a kite string had slit his neck while he was on his bike on a flyover in Southeast Delhi, succumbed to his injuries, police said on Sunday. Police sources said that the man, identified as Rajneesh, had wrapped a cloth around his neck as precaution, but the string managed to cut through the cloth and slit his neck. Police added that Rajneesh died just hours after being taken to the hospital. The incident was reported around 4.40 pm on the carriageway connecting Sarita Vihar to Faridabad. 'He was found bleeding heavily from the neck… Preliminary investigation suggests that he was injured from manjha or a kite string,' DCP (South East) Hemant Tiwari had said on Saturday. Police also said that Rajneesh had attempted to stem the bleeding before collapsing on the road. Despite being banned in Delhi, the sale of Chinese manjha — a nylon string coated with crushed pieces of glass — has not stopped. In recent years, it has been linked to multiple cases of deaths and injuries where mostly people riding two-wheelers have been reported as the victims. On June 27, Yash Goswami (22) died after his throat was slit by manjha on Rani Jhansi flyover in North Delhi. The Karawal Nagar resident was on his way home. In another incident on July 2, though the string did not claim the life of Axis Bank employee Prakash, it slashed his face while he was on the Shastri Park flyover on his bike.

Internet users at risk: Watch your click as crooks eye trends

Kochi: Putting internet users in the city at high risk, cybercriminals are using new tricks to spread APK files and hidden links through messaging apps. This revelation comes after city police busted a major racket that used fake m-Parivahan apps to commit fraud. Investigators said they recovered several similar applications from those arrested, indicating they were conducting multiple such scams. The cyber wing of city police was the first to make an arrest in the m-Parivahan fraud, despite hundreds of complaints being registered in various states where APK files disguised as the official app were being circulated through messaging platforms like WhatsApp. Phones of those who installed the apps were hacked, leading to severe monetary loss. "When we arrested them, we found an array of such APK files. One of them was for installing an app to engage in sex chats, which could then be used for extortion through honey-trapping. Very few victims would file complaints in such cases fearing shame. Another APK file was for bogus KYC updation," said an officer with the cyber wing. City police commissioner Putta Vimaladitya said scamsters were changing tactics depending on what was trending at the time and users must be extremely careful. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "For instance, as time for filing income tax returns approaches, they create an APK file for an app to file I-T returns or to calculate your income tax amount. The moment someone downloads, data gets stolen. Sometimes they take control of the screen, while sometimes only messages. Many aim to take control of applications on the phone," he said. Fresh complaints in m-Parivahan style are becoming fewer while they are coming up with newer things, he added. Another city police officer said there was a surge in bogus links last week over Independence Day. "Since many e-commerce platforms provide offers during this period, scamsters took advantage. Links were sent with similar offers, luring people into sharing their personal details. Such links can be expected during Onam season. Another trend is sending links warning of private photos being online so that users are tempted to check it by clicking the attached link," said an officer. Vimaladitya said verifying such links remains the most effective safeguard against such scams. "It is very unlikely that an official body would send you important official communication through WhatsApp. Even if that happens, everything must be cross-checked — either by directly contacting the office concerned or by visiting authentic websites and writing to them for clarity. For example, If you search for a bank like Federal Bank on Google, fake website links might appear. Instead, search for the original Federal Bank URL, confirm its authenticity and then proceed. This kind of due diligence is essential before making any online transaction," he said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
