‘If we want to laugh we laugh; if we want to cry we cry': Arne Slot's heartfelt speech before Liverpool's pre-season match after Diogo Jota tragedy

Liverpool start their pre-season friendlies with a match against English second-tier side Preston North End on Sunday, 10 days after the death of forward Diogo Jota. Manager Arne Slot told the club's in-house media that he struggled to find the right words to tell the players before what will be the first match they play since the shock passing of their teammate.
Jota and his brother Andre Silva died in a car crash in Spain on July 3. 'What I've said to the players, it's very difficult to find the right words because we constantly debate what is appropriate,' said Slot in an emotional interview.
'What is appropriate in our actions? What is appropriate (for) what we have to say? Can we train again? Can we laugh again? Can we be angry if there's a wrong decision?
'And I've said to them, maybe the best thing for us to do is handle this situation like Jota was. And what I meant with that is that Jota was always himself, it didn't matter if he was talking to me, to his teammates, to the staff, he was always himself.
'So let us try to be ourselves as well. So, if we want to laugh we laugh; if we want to cry we're going to cry,' he said.
Liverpool had delayed the return of their players for pre-season training as most of them had attended Jota's funeral in Portugal last week. Slot said that the Portuguese forward was someone he used to turn to whenever he needed 'something special' during games. 'I always looked at him and said, 'now we need something special from you',' Slot said. 'And he delivered so many times. I can come up with all of these moments.
'So we are in a very difficult time, so let's try to do what Diogo did so many times. If it's so difficult then try a little bit harder or just keep on going and try to make it work.'

Here are five reasond where the match was lost by India: 1. Approach towards chasing 193 India had to chase 193 in the final innings, on the final day, but they came out with a defensive approach. Their shot selection had the English bowlers dominate. Archer and Stokes picked up three wickets each in the second innings. ‘I saw Rishabh stutter in my peripheral': Ben Stokes opens up about Pant's crucial run out after winning Lord's Test

A very exhausted but satisfied England skipper Ben Stokes on Monday reveled what was going through his mind when he ran out India's most in-form batter in the series in Rishabh Pant in the 2nd innings of the match on Day 3. The dismissal with Pant batting at 74, turned out to be a pivotal moment of the match, the ripple effect of which was felt throughout as India lost to England by 22 runs on day 5 to go 1-2 down in the series. 'I had bowled an important spell, I was pretty pumped up, very important position at extra cover, it was one of those things, I saw Rishabh stutter in my peripheral, natural instincts took over and it is a great feeling when you let go of the ball and know that is going towards the stumps,' stokes said in the post-match interview at Lord's. 'Big part of the game, Rishabh played really well, we all know how dangerous he can be and that wicket this morning was a big one and Jofra was the man to do it,' he added. Even India captain Shubman Gill pointed out that run out of his vice captain was the pivotal moment that turned the match in the hosts' favour. 'The most vital turnaround point for me was Rishabh's runout. We could have added some more runs and the match would have been different,' he said at the post-match press conference. In the match, Ravindra Jadeja's heroic effort went in vain as England edged out India by 22 runs on the fifth and final day of a wildly fluctuating third Test. The day started with India requiring 135 runs and England having to pick six wickets after setting the visitors a 193-run target. The hosts got four Indian batters out before lunch but were made to work hard for the remaining two wickets in the last two sessions. India were finally all out for 170. Archer (3/55) and Stokes (3/48) were the chief architects of the English victory, even as Jadeja battled hard for India with a gritty unbeaten 61.

England's Stunning Gesture For Mohammed Siraj After 'Sledging' Battle At Lord's Goes Viral

The Lord's Test match between India and England ended on the most dramatic note possible as Shoaib Bashir dismissed Mohammed Siraj to hand the hosts a thrilling victory. It was a Test match that saw a brutal 'sledging' battle between the two sides with tempers flaring on multiple occasions. Chasing a target of 193, India were in deep trouble as they lost eight wickets for 112. However, Ravindra Jadeja stitched together partnerships with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj to take India close to the target. The match went right down to the wire when Siraj was dismissed by Shoaib Bashir and India slumped to a 22-run loss. Siraj was left heartbroken by the shocking dismissal but England players, led by Joe Root, were quick to console him - a gesture that won hearts after a match that was marred by on-field spats. If Mohammed Siraj had stopped that ball from hitting the stumps with his foot, we would have won the match. We lost the match after so much hard work of Ravindra Jadeja #INDvsENG Feeling sad for @imjadeja — 𝐑𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐢𝐢⁴⁵(@rushiii_12) July 14, 2025 Ravindra Jadeja's heroic effort went in vain as England edged out India by 22 runs on the fifth and final day of a wildly fluctuating third Test with skipper Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer playing pivotal roles. England thus go 2-1 up in the five-match series. India lost the big wickets of Rishabh Pant (9), KL Rahul (39), Washington Sundar (0), and Nitish Reddy (13) in the first session to hand England the advantage. Lead pacer Archer sent Pant's off stump for a walk with a jaffa that straightened after landing on the perfect length. Skipper Stokes rose to the occasion as he trapped KL Rahul in front of the wicket, giving the momentum back to England. The on-field umpire was not convinced by the England team's loud appeal for an lbw, prompting Stokes to go upstairs and the decision came in his favour. Jofra was on the money consistently this morning and pulled off a brilliant catch off his own bowling to send back Sundar and Chris Wokes, and then had Washinton Sundar edge one to the keeper. Their efforts paved the way for England victory.
