Wadsworth-area crash leaves 1 dead, 5 seriously injured

Chicago Tribune07-07-2025
A Niles woman was killed over the weekend when her car was struck by a suspected drunk driver near Wadsworth, the Lake County Sheriff's Office said.
The woman, 33, was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped at a stop sign at the intersection of Russell Road and Frontage Road when her car was hit at about 10:15 p.m. Saturday.
Authorities have not yet released her identity.
Police said a Porsche Macan driven by a 58-year-old Addison man was westbound on Russell at high speed when it failed to slow and ran into the rear of the Chevrolet Volt in which the Niles woman was a passenger.
The force of the collision pushed the Volt into a Mercedes-Benz that was also at the stop sign.
The Volt driver, a 35-year-old man, and a 4-year-old girl, both of Niles, were brought to a hospital with what police said were serious but not life-threatening injuries.
The Mercedes-Benz driver and a passenger were also brought to a hospital with serious injuries, police said. The Porsche driver was also hospitalized with serious injuries, police said.
Speed and alcohol impairment appear to be factors in the crash, police said. The Porsche driver will likely face criminal charges after he is discharged from the hospital, police said.

Former Russian Miss Universe contestant, 30, dies after elk smashes through windshield

A model and former Miss Universe contestant from Russia died last week from injuries she suffered after an elk crashed through the windshield of her Porsche, according to a report. Kseniya Alexandrova, 30, died from severe brain injuries from the accident that occurred while she was driving with her husband in Tver Oblast, Russia, on July 5, Russian news outlet RIA reported. She remained hospitalized in a coma until her death on Aug. 12. Alexandrova and her husband were returning home from Rzhev when the collision with the elk happened on the M‑9 highway, the outlet reported. The husband, who was not named in the report, said there was no time to react to the animal jumping in front of the couple's Porsche Panamera, adding that he and Alexandrova were both wearing seatbelts, and were driving at a low speed during the collision. "From the moment it jumped out to the impact, a split second passed. I didn't have time to do anything," he told the outlet in a statement translated from Russian. Alexandrova, who was in the passenger seat, suffered a head injury when the animal hurtled through the windshield and into the cabin of the car, her husband told the outlet. "She was unconscious, her head was fractured, everything was covered in blood. The frontal bones of the skull were broken – it was an open cranial-brain injury," he said. The couple had been married just four months before the freak accident, according to her Instagram. She was also a psychologist who earned her degree from Moscow Pedagogical State University, according to a November 2022 post on her social media. Alexandrova represented Russia in the 2017 Miss Universe pageant and placed second in the Miss Russia competition earlier that year. Alexandrova's modeling agency, Modus Vivendis, confirmed her death in a statement that was written in Russian and posted on the agency's Instagram on Aug. 13. "It is with great sadness that we inform you that our colleague and friend, model Kseniya Alexandrova, passed away yesterday evening," the translated statement said. "Kseniya was bright [and] talented. She knew how to inspire, support and give warmth to everyone who was around," the agency continued. "For us, she will forever remain a symbol of beauty, kindness and inner strength."

Snoring suspected drink-driver caught by police sleeping at wheel

Watch the moment that a suspected drink-driver was caught by police snoring at the wheel. Footage shared by Cambridgeshire Police on Thursday (14 August) shows officers approaching a stationary vehicle in the middle of the road, after a member of the public reported that they saw a driver stumble into a Mercedes van and drive away. Inside the van was Scott Tuite, 36, who can be heard audibly snoring before officers removed the keys from the ignition and woke him up. Tuite, of Baumgartner, Godmanchester, failed to provide a specimen of breath and was arrested. He pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen for analysis at Cambridge Magistrates' Court on Thursday (7 August). He was handed a community order for 12 months, ordered to complete 80 hours of unpaid work and disqualified from driving.

Gunmen carjack BMW driver on Long Island Expressway: ‘I made a run for it'

QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) — A man was carjacked by three masked gunmen on the Long Island Expressway early Friday morning while on his way home from a night out, according to police and the victim. The man, 33, was driving a late-model BMW eastbound on the LIE when he was rear-ended by a Porsche on the LIE near Exit 31S at around 3:45 a.m., according to the NYPD. More Local News Police believe the fender bender was a setup to get the man out of the white luxury vehicle. 'As I'm looking at the damage, three guys with masks come over with loaded guns and say, 'Give me everything you got,'' the BMW driver told PIX11 News on Friday. After the collision, the victim said his first instinct was to pull over to check his car, and that's when three armed men jumped out of the Porsche, according to the victim and police. Police said two shots were fired in the air, but nobody was hit. The suspects also ripped a gold chain off the man's neck, he said. The suspects then drove off with the BMW and the Porsche, police said. 'I made a run for it. I ran down the LIE and they took the car,' said the driver, whose identity is being concealed. There have been no arrests. The investigation is ongoing. Submit tips to police by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), visiting downloading the NYPD Crime Stoppers mobile app, or texting 274637 (CRIMES) then entering TIP577.
