TVET reforms lift Malaysia's graduate employability to 95.1 pct

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) reforms have boosted graduate employability to 95.1 per cent, with more than 430,000 students now enrolled nationwide, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also National TVET Council (MTVET) chairman, said 53.56 per cent of the country's secondary school leavers in 2024 chose TVET as their first option, marking a significant shift in national education trends.
'When I was entrusted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in 2023 to chair the National TVET Council, I knew this was more than just a policy role,' he said when opening the ASEAN TVET Conference (ATVET) 2025 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) here today.
The reforms, he said, were anchored on integrating 12 ministries under one vision, aligning skills training with market demand and ensuring inclusivity so that no community is left behind.
This led to the development of the National TVET Policy 2030, the TVET Big Data System, the TVET MADANI Portal and the UP_TVET application system connecting students to opportunities across ministries.
He said Malaysia has also introduced new certification levels equivalent to higher education qualifications and expanded minimum wage coverage to semi-skilled and TVET graduates under MASCO Code 8 and above. - Bernama

No Barisan-Pakatan clashes in Sabah polls, says Ahmad Zahid

SHAH ALAM: Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says seat distribution between the coalition and Pakatan Harapan for the upcoming Sabah state polls has been finalised, with no overlaps. Ahmad Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, further informed that no negotiations have been held between Barisan and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) regarding seat distribution or cooperation for the state election, in order to respect Pakatan. However, Ahmad Zahid anticipated that at least three-cornered contests would be unavoidable, following the likelihood of participation from other and new parties. "What has been finalised is Barisan-Pakatan, and we respect Pakatan-GRS. There are no direct negotiations between Barisan and GRS. So far, any other discussions to avoid three-cornered contests or seat overlaps have been conducted behind the scenes. "However, I feel that since there are too many new parties in Sabah wanting to contest this time, three-cornered fights will certainly be unavoidable, possibly up to eight-cornered. That is up to them, as that is the political landscape in Sabah. BN-PH has no overlapping seats,' he said. He said this when met after attending the 16th National-Level Civil Defence Student Corps (Kor Sispa) Training Completion Parade and Commissioning Ceremony here on Saturday (Aug 16). Ahmad Zahid was earlier reported as saying that negotiations on cooperation and seat distribution within the BN, PH, and GRS alliance for the state election were nearly completed. - Bernama

Zahid: Don't take members from coalition partners

SHAH ALAM: Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has verbally reminded Unity Government parties to uphold the convention of not accepting members from other component parties. Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional chairman, said a protest note was being prepared to be sent to parties that have admitted Umno members. "The protest note is a decision of the Umno Supreme Council. We have long stated that parties in the Unity Government should not accept members from other component parties. "This must be respected; it is a convention that should be honoured by every party in the coalition. "The note is being prepared, but I have already conveyed this verbally to the respective party presidents," he said. Zahid, who is the deputy prime minister, told reporters this after attending the 16th National Civil Defence Student Corps Commissioning ceremony. His comments follow news that Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz had his application to join PKR accepted. Zafrul resigned as an Umno Supreme Council member and Kota Raja division chief on May 30. Earlier, Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party would submit protest notes to coalition partners that had admitted or planned to admit former Umno members. He said the move was a stern warning to safeguard ties within the Unity Government. Asyraf said the decision was made at the Supreme Council meeting held on Aug 13.
