Time of Indiaa day ago
Lucknow: As a testament to their father's enduring legacy, brothers Manoj Gupta and Neeraj Gupta, co-founders of US-based Opalescent IT Solutions Inc., have etched a lasting tribute in the annals of IIT-Kanpur's history.
Their generous donation has paved the way for an eight-bed ward dedicated to economically weaker section (EWS) patients at the esteemed Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology, seamlessly weaving compassion into the fabric of excellence that defines the institution.
The contribution, made through the IIT-Kanpur Foundation, a US-based non-profit organization, will support the institute's mission of education and research.
The ward will be named in memory of their parents, Rukmani Gupta and MC Gupta, as the EWS Bay/Ward, reflecting the family's enduring connection to IIT-Kanpur.
Notably, their father, who served as an administrative superintendent from 1961 to 1997, was recognized for his exemplary service with the Long and Satisfactory Service Award in 1987. This philanthropic gesture not only honours their father's legacy but also strengthens the family's bond with the institute.

Opalescent IT Solutions Inc., founded in 2018 by the Gupta brothers, is a U.S.-based company that offers legal consulting, customer acquisition, digital marketing, and financial funding for small and medium-sized businesses.
Prof Manindra Agrawal, director of IIT-K, said, "The Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology represents our vision to transform healthcare and MedTech innovation in India. As regulatory curbs seem to ease fintechs bet on festive spark in unsecured lending play

Academy Empower your mind, elevate your skills ETtech The digital lending sector is anticipating a turnaround in FY26, after more than a year of a slowdown amid growth pangs, expecting the coming festive season to trigger a revival of the unsecured credit insiders across fintechs like BharatPe, and Paytm , and traditional lenders like Poonawala Fincorp and L&T Finance said the regulatory clampdown on unsecured lending in 2024 and early 2025 is showing signs of ebbing. This is encouraging large banks and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) who typically co-lend with fintechs to slowly open up to unsecured credit.'We will power our consumer lending play primarily with our own NBFC, and we are currently getting our internal systems right, so that once the festive season comes, we can quickly scale up disbursals,' said Nalin Negi, chief executive officer, BharatPe. The New Delhi-based fintech, which is mainly into merchant lending, is preparing to grow its consumer lending business. BharatPe owns around 74% in Trillionloans, a registered One97 Communications , which runs Paytm, showed a strong growth in its financial services business in the June quarter, primarily driven by unsecured merchant and consumer insiders believe that the stress in the unsecured sector has bottomed out and are expecting a return to growth in the coming months. 'It does feel like that we are towards the bottom of what our potential is on that platform… maybe 6 or 12 months from now, we'll be getting a lot more monetisation out of that,' said Madhur Deora, chief financial officer at sentiments are being echoed by top executives at large NBFCs. Firms like Poonawala Fincorp and L&T Finance, which work with fintechs like PhonePe, Paytm, and Amazon to power their unsecured lending business, reported growth in the June quarter and issued a positive outlook for the rest of the fiscal year.'I do believe that the situation in the market is slowly improving, the sort of the mini cycle we saw in some asset classes, especially unsecured and microfinance, are showing signs of dissipation,' said Sudipto Roy, chief executive officer, L&T Finance. 'I think it will take another two quarters for the industry to see full dissipation.''H2 will be very, very good, especially starting with the festive season and in Q4 (FY26),' Roy sector entered into the slow lane following the Reserve Bank of India's November 2023 diktat on increasing the risk weightage on unsecured personal loans by 25 basis points. ‘Extortion': Court slaps 10-lakh fine on RWA secretary

New Delhi: Pointing out that the facts are "shocking and alarming", Delhi High Court has slapped a cost of Rs 10 lakh on a purported general secretary of an RWA for allegedly extorting money from property owners against whom he filed petitions alleging illegal construction. In a rare move, the court also referred the case of the lawyer representing the RWA office holder, to the Bar Council of Delhi to assess violations of rules and regulations. "These facts are alarming and shocking, which disclose the deplorable conduct of the petitioner in filing cases for extorting money from people by misusing and abusing the process of this court. On the one hand, the court has to deal with cases of unauthorised constructions strictly with an iron hand; at the same time, the court has to ensure that the process of the court is not misused by anyone in order to extort money from the persons undertaking such construction. A proceeding before a court is a solemn process for furthering the cause of justice, and not for aiding unlawful objectives of certain individuals," Justice Mini Pushkarna noted in a recent order. He was represented by advocate Babu Lal Gupta, and both also run an unregistered NGO, Green Gold Earth of World. "These petitions are being filed by purported NGOs for clearly oblique motives," the court observed. "This is a case of suppression of material facts, with the NGO not even being registered."The court held that both Lodhi and Gupta were involved in a scheme under the guise of the RWA and the NGO, and that their actions amounted to impersonation and abuse of judicial process. In light of Gupta's involvement, the court directed the Bar Council of Delhi to examine his conduct and determine if it violated professional standards. 'No deal till there's a deal': Donald Trump after talks with Vladimir Putin; 'next time in Moscow', says Russian president

After a closely watched closed-door meeting in Alaska that lasted over 3 hours, US president Donald Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin made their first public remarks — demonstrating both optimism and restraint about the future of bilateral relations and the conflict in Ukraine. The joint press conference, however, lasted only a few minutes. No deal was announced, and neither leader took questions. Putin: A Long-Overdue Dialogue President Putin opened the joint news conference—an unusual move, as American presidents typically speak first when hosting foreign leaders. He took the opportunity to reflect on the deteriorating state of US-Russia relations, describing them as 'fallen to the lowest point since the Cold War.' Emphasising the need to shift from confrontation to dialogue, Putin declared, 'Sooner or later, we have to amend the situation.' He called the meeting 'long overdue,' underscoring the shared history of Russia and the U.S., especially poignant in the Alaskan setting. A centerpiece of their private discussions, according to Putin, was the situation in Ukraine. He expressed hope that 'the Ukrainians and Europeans choose to not throw a wrench in' the peace process. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Are The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo Putin also thanked Trump for his 'well-wishing tone,' noting the need for both sides to focus on tangible results. 'Trump clearly cares about the prosperity of his nation. But understands Russia has its own interests,' Putin stated, positioning the dialogue as one of mutual respect and realism. 'No Deal Until There's a Deal': Trump's Message President Trump began his statement on an upbeat note, describing the meeting as 'very productive' and noting a considerable number of agreements reached. However, Trump acknowledged that several major issues remain unresolved. 'A couple big ones where we haven't quite gotten there, but we've made some headway,' he said. Reiterating his well-known negotiation mantra, Trump stated, 'There's no deal until there's a deal.' He announced his intention to call NATO leaders and other key figures to update them on the meeting's progress. President Zelenskyy of Ukraine, he said, would also be briefed. 'It's ultimately up to them. They're going to have to agree with what Marco and Steve and some of the great people from the Trump administration who've come here,' Trump added, hinting at the broader coalition of voices involved in the process. The Road Ahead While the meeting in Anchorage did not yield a definitive agreement, both leaders emphasised progress and the importance of continued dialogue. Trump's decision to consult further with NATO and Ukrainian leadership signals that the path to resolution—especially regarding Ukraine—will require multilateral cooperation and careful negotiation. As President Trump and President Putin depart Anchorage, the world watches for signs that optimism and engagement will translate into lasting progress. The message from both sides was clear: the door to peace is open, but it will take hard work—and consensus—to walk through. 'Next time in Moscow' At the conclusion of the high-stakes Alaska summit between, Putin delivered a pointed parting remark, saying in English, "Next time in Moscow". This statement signals Putin's willingness to continue diplomatic engagements with Trump, potentially inviting the next meeting to be held on Russian soil. The Alaska talks, which lasted several hours, were seen by Putin as a diplomatic victory, allowing him to show resilience against Western isolation efforts following the Ukraine conflict. For Trump, the summit represented a moment to seek progress toward ending the war in Ukraine, with hopes of arranging further negotiations that might include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
