Russia's Ambassador to Iraq: Syria has no objection to our bases
Shafaq News/ On Thursday, Russia's Ambassador to Baghdad, Elbrus Kutrashev, confirmed that Syrian authorities did not oppose the presence of Russian military bases in Syria.
Kotrashchev told Shafaq News Agency that "there are understandings between the Russian government and the Syrian government to establish and strengthen relations between the two countries."
He added that Moscow and Damascus are in the process of further developing their bilateral ties, and 'so far, there has been no official objection from the Syrian authorities regarding the presence of Russian bases on their territory."
Notably, Russia operates several military bases in Syria, including the Hmeimim base, which houses both aircraft and ground forces. This base has been a significant point of support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and provided shelter to displaced Syrians during the coastal hostilities in March.

Oil prices headed for rebound this week as US-China trade talks resume
Shafaq News/ Oil prices slipped on Friday but were on track for their first weekly gain in three weeks after U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping resumed trade talks, raising hopes for growth and stronger demand in the world's two largest economies. Brent crude futures fell 19 cents, or 0.3%, to $65.15 a barrel as of 0441 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude gave up 20 cents, also 0.3%, to $63.17, after gaining around 50 cents on Thursday. On a weekly basis, both benchmarks were on track to settle higher after falling for two straight weeks. Brent has advanced 2.1% this week, while WTI is trading 4% higher. China's official Xinhua news agency said trade talks between Xi and Trump took place at Washington's request. Trump said the call had led to a "very positive conclusion," adding the U.S. was "in very good shape with China and the trade deal." Canada also continued trade talks with the U.S., with Prime Minister Mark Carney in direct contact with Trump, according to Industry Minister Melanie Joly. The oil market continued to swing with news on tariff negotiations and data showing how trade uncertainty and the impact of the U.S. levies are flowing through into the global economy. "The potential for increased US sanctions in Venezuela to limit crude exports and the potential for Israeli strike on Iranian infrastructure add to upside risks for prices," analysts at BMI, a Fitch affiliate, said in a note on Friday. "But both weaker demand for oil and increased production from both OPEC+ and non-OPEC producers will add to downside price pressures in the coming quarters." Top exporter Saudi Arabia cut its July crude prices for Asia to near two-month lows. That was a smaller price reduction than expected after OPEC+ agreed to ramp up output by 411,000 barrels per day in July. The kingdom had been pushing for a bigger output hike, part of a broader strategy to win back market share and discipline over-producers in OPEC+, which groups the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies including Russia.

KRG: Erbil engaging Baghdad and world powers to resolve salary crisis

Speaking to reporters following Eid al-Adha prayers in Erbil, Sadiq voiced deep concern over the Iraqi government's decision to halt salary payments during the holiday. 'No government should deny its citizens their wages, especially during a sacred occasion,' he noted. Sadiq emphasized that the KRG has met all its obligations under Iraq's constitution and relevant legal frameworks, adding, 'The government is working actively, both in Baghdad and with international actors, to resolve this issue.' The remarks come amid heightened tensions following the Iraqi Ministry of Finance's decision to freeze May 2025 salary disbursements to the Region. Baghdad accuses the KRG of failing to transfer oil and non-oil revenues as mandated by the Federal Budget Law and a ruling by the Federal Supreme Court. Erbil has dismissed the accusations as politically motivated, calling the move 'unconstitutional, unlawful, and a form of collective punishment' that targets ordinary citizens. In response, representatives of civil society organizations in the Kurdish capital submitted a letter to the United Nations on Thursday, appealing for international intervention to help lift what they described as a financial siege. Also on Thursday, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani reaffirmed the KRG's commitment to defending the rights of the Kurdish people through all legal and constitutional avenues.

Russia strikes Kyiv with drones and missiles: 20+ casualties reported
Shafaq News/ Russia launched a wave of drone and missile attacks on Ukraine overnight, causing over 20 casualties in the capital Kyiv, Ukrainian officials said on Friday. "Kyiv came under another attack involving UAVs and ballistic missiles. Rescuers are responding to the aftermath at several locations across the city," the State Emergency Service of Ukraine wrote on Telegram. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed four deaths and 20 injuries, including 16 hospitalized. Fires reportedly broke out across several districts, affecting a residential building, a civil infrastructure facility, and a metal hangar. Train tracks in the region were also damaged, causing delays of up to 90 minutes. Western regions were also targeted. Ternopil's regional military administration chief, Vyacheslav Negoda, described it as 'the most massive' air assault to date, with multiple hits. In Lutsk, five people were injured, and damage was reported to homes, educational institutions, and a government building. Khmelnytsky also suffered building and vehicle damage. The assault follows Ukrainian drone strikes that destroyed Russian strategic bombers in recent days. According to Ukrainian intelligence, drones hidden in wooden sheds were used to destroy several nuclear-capable aircraft inside Russia. In a call with US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed retaliation, while Kremlin officials hinted at an unspecified response.
