New coach Gattuso vows to restore enthusiasm to battered Italy

Reuters6 hours ago

ROME, June 19 (Reuters) - Italy's new coach Gennaro Gattuso on Thursday pledged to restore enthusiasm and create "a family" at the battered national team, aiming to secure qualification for the next World Cup after the Azzurri missed out twice in a row.
Gattuso replaces Luciano Spalletti, who was sacked this month following a 3-0 defeat by Norway in a World Cup qualifier. He officially departed after overseeing his final match, a 2-0 victory against Moldova.
"It's a dream come true, and I certainly hope to be up to the task. I know the job won't be easy, but nothing in life is easy," said Gattuso, who recently left Croatian club Hajduk Split after a third-placed finish in the country's top flight.
Nicknamed 'Ringhio' (Growler) for his tenacious attitude on the pitch, the 47-year-old earned 73 caps for the Italian national team and was a key member of the 2006 World Cup-winning squad.
Fans hope his strong character can help with the task of taking the four-time world champions to next year's World Cup, which will be played in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Italy, third in World Cup qualifying Group I, will host Estonia on September 5 before taking on Israel three days later.
"My goal is that whoever comes to the training ground comes with great enthusiasm and to create a family," said Gattuso, who according to a source at the Italian soccer federation (FIGC) was given a one-year contract.
Gattuso spent the bulk of his playing career at AC Milan, where he won two Champions League and two Serie A titles, before returning to coach the club from 2017 to 2019. As a manager he won the Coppa Italia with Napoli in 2020.
"The primary aim is to create a sense of belonging" to the Azzurri team, Gattuso told reporters during his presentation to the press at a luxury hotel in central Rome.
The new coach said he believed players felt the pressure of having missed out on qualification for two World Cups in a row and that was weighing on the team's performance.
"We must be good at reacting, only those who react and give it all can get out of this situation," he said.

Thomas Frank shows his true colours over Ange Postecoglou as new Tottenham boss makes feelings clear

The former Brentford manager was hired by Daniel Levy to take over from the ex-Celtic gaffer in North London Thomas Frank has spoken out on Ange Postecoglou as part of his first interview as Tottenham's new manager – hailing him as a legend. The former Celtic boss delivered on his second season trophy promise as he sparked wild scenes in Bilbao by defeating Manchester United in the Europa League Final and ending the long wait for silverware in North London. ‌ The triumph also booked a golden ticket to the Champions League this season and landed Spurs a mega windfall in the process. ‌ However, a 17th place finish in the English Premier League - despite the success in Europe's second tier competition - proved to much for Daniel Levy and club bosses as they decided to axe Ange after two seasons at the club. They moved quickly and turned attentions to Brentford boss Frank and got a deal over the line with the Bees. Now, the new Spurs boss has spoken for the first time since taking up his new position and he has shown his true colours over the man he has replaced. Speaking as part of an in-house interview, Frank said: "I think Ange has done something special. He'll forever be a legend in Tottenham. "It's important to understand we all stand on the shoulders of others. "I'm going in on the foundation Ange built, and his coaching staff, and I'm very humble about that. ‌ "I'll do my very best to continue the great work he put in. "The feeling, the excitement, the joy and the happiness in the fans' faces, the pictures were 'wow'. "Hopefully, we can create more of those moments. That will be the ultimate dream: to do that and build on that." ‌ Tottenham kick off the new season at home to Burnley but before that EPL showdown they have the small matter of fighting PSG in the Super Cup with more silverware on the line before the campaign even gets up and running. Ange has already been linked with a quick-fire return to the dugout in Saudi as he ponders his next steps. But pubs have been warned that they will have to stick to their ordinary timings if neither team manages to reach the final stages of the "prestigious tournament". The semi-finals are set to take place on July 22 and 23, with the final on July 27. Speaking in the Commons today, Dame Diana said: "[Pubs] stand to benefit from this modest extension which would allow them to accommodate increased demand during these high-profile fixtures. "If neither England nor Wales reach the semi-finals, the proposed extension will not apply on July 22 or 23. "Similarly, if one or both teams reach the semi-finals but do not progress to the final, normal licensing hours will apply on July 27. "It is right to acknowledge as well that police representatives have expressed some concerns regarding the potential for increased crime and disorder. "Now, whilst operational decisions on deployment and resourcing are a matter for individual forces, I am confident that appropriate measures will be taken to mitigate any risks, as has happened in similar cases. "Notably, there have been no significant incidents of large-scale disorder linked to previous licensing extensions, which I think is testament to the professionalism of our police service, to whom we owe our thanks." Mr Snowden, the MP for Fylde, said the Conservatives were "delighted" to support the temporary changes. He added: "I don't think I would have much choice on this matter, as if I ever stood at this dispatch box and opposed more time in the pub to watch football, my dad would probably disown me. "We are the defending champions of the Women's Uefa cup after England's magnificent performance at the 2022 tournament hosted here in the UK at Wembley. "The final saw a 2-1 victory, and of course in football, it was made all the sweeter by beating the Germans. "So this is a fantastic time to support your local as well as your national." What Conor Coady really thinks about Rangers transfer as target ready to show Brendan Rodgers what he passed on

Coady is a target for Rangers and has previous with Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers ahead of a reunion in Glasgow Conor Coady admitted Brendan Rodgers pushing him out on loan was a turning point in his early career – as he gears up to show his former boss the player he's turned into. The defender is a target for new Rangers boss Russell Martin who is desperately in need of defensive reinforcements before their first Champions League qualifier with Panathinaikos, which is coming up fast. ‌ News of John Souttar's surgery might have catapulted Coady to top priority status with Robin Propper, Clinton Nsiala, Ben Davies and Leon King the only central defensive options if Souttar is unavailable. ‌ If the 32-year-old does decide on a move to Ibrox then it will mean crossing paths with Celtic boss Rodgers – who coached him during his formative days at Liverpool and sent him out to gain first-team experience at Sheffield United in 2013. And speaking in 2020, the defender credited the Irishman for pushing him to leave his comfort zone. He said: "Brendan Rodgers was good to me when I was young. I had a season training with the first team at Melwood, learning off them. That was big for me, but I always knew it was tough. "I knew at some point I'd have to come away from Liverpool to really experience being a first-team player. It was the best decision I ever made, and Brendan was great for that; he pushed that to send me on loan and try to improve my game. "Liverpool were always getting better, they were always improving, and the players in my position were ridiculous. But I just wanted to play football. I knew where I was at, the type of level I was at, but I just wanted to be part of a first team, playing in games which meant something, playing against men." He ultimately never made the grade under Rodgers at Anfield, making just two appearances, and now he may be gearing up to show his former boss the player he passed on by taking the fight to him in Glasgow. ‌ Pundit Lee Hendrie meanwhile has offered an insight into where Coady's head is on the deal. He told FootballLeagueWorld: "I could see him at Ibrox, for sure. I think that he could certainly step in and do a job at Rangers. There's no doubt about that. He still offers a lot in the line of experience. "He has been limited on game time, but I think, particularly with Leicester being in the Championship, he'd be one you look at and think that he's got a bit more mileage in him to go on and kick on in the Championship. ‌ "If you're linked with Rangers, I'm sure that would certainly give him something to think about. I'd be looking at it from a Leicester point of view, thinking that he'd be one that I want to keep hold of, given some of the players that they have at the club."
