Baramulla MP Er Rashid Gets Limited Custody Parole To Attend Parliament, His Party Cries Foul Over ‘Harsh Conditions'
His physical presence will be permitted inside Parliament only during session hours. Once proceedings end, he will be sent straight back to jail, even if it means late hours. The court has directed that every rupee of travel, security and related arrangements must be paid by Rashid himself.

AIP's chief spokesperson Inam un-Nabi expressed a mix of relief and anger. The decision, he said, gives the impression of a reluctant nod rather than recognition of a democratic mandate. 'Yes, he is allowed to attend (Parliament's proceedings). But why only for 12 days? Why should he pay for it all himself? These terms are not only strict, but designed to humiliate,' he said, speaking from Srinagar.
He also questioned the 'inconsistency' in the court's approach. 'This is the same judge who earlier gave him interim bail during elections. He was even allowed an extension to continue campaigning. What changed now? Why has the court drawn a line suddenly and so narrowly?' he asked.
The party is now planning its next move.
According to Inam, the AIP's legal team is preparing to approach the Delhi High Court, challenging what they call a discriminatory parole order. The party argues that a serving MP, duly elected by the people, should be able to participate in the House without punitive conditions that 'reduce his role to a token gesture'.
'We are not asking for privileges. We are asking for fairness. A man who won from jail and who represents lakhs of people should not be shackled in silence inside the very Parliament he was elected to enter,' Inam said.
A former MLA and vocal critic of both mainstream and separatist politics in Kashmir, Engineer Rashid has remained behind bars since 2019 under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act or UAPA, linked to a terror funding case. Despite his imprisonment, he contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and won Baramulla with a stunning margin, defeating high-profile candidates – including J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
Since his victory, public pressure has been growing for his release or at least his presence in Parliament. The court's recent order answers that call partially. But for the AIP and many in Kashmir, the relief is thin and the restrictions speak louder than the permission.
As the Monsoon Session of the Parliament is going on, Rashid may step into the Lok Sabha but not as a free man. Each day, his route will trace the same path: from the iron gates of Tihar to the echoing halls of the Lok Sabha and back again, under guard and silence.

Jubilant scenes unfolded at Shantisheela Housing Society on Law College Road on Saturday as Lt Colonel Prasad Purohit returned home for the first time after being acquitted in the 2008 Malegaon blast case. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) court, on July 31, acquitted all seven remaining accused, including Purohit, of all charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), Arms Act, and other relevant laws, bringing to an end a legal battle that spanned nearly 17 years. The 2008 Malegaon blast occurred on September 29, when a bomb strapped to a motorcycle exploded near a mosque at Bhikkhu Chowk in Malegaon, Nashik district, killing six people and injuring 95 others. The case, initially investigated by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and later handed over to the NIA, had a total of 11 accused. Purohit, who was arrested in November 2008, spent nearly nine years in jail before being granted bail by the Supreme Court in 2017. Over the years, the case became politically and socially charged due to the alleged involvement of individuals linked to right-wing groups, leading to a contentious national debate. The NIA court's verdict came after examining 323 prosecution witnesses and eight defence witnesses. In its ruling, the court noted that there was insufficient evidence to prove the charges under UAPA and other sections against the remaining accused. Purohit's legal team has maintained that he was falsely implicated despite being an Army intelligence officer working to infiltrate and monitor extremist groups. His acquittal has been met with celebration in some quarters, while others have questioned the outcome, calling for a review of the investigation and judicial process.

‘Land illegally held by CM will be returned to the poor': Gaurav Gogoi in Assam
Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday said all the land "illegally" occupied by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his ministers will be redistributed among the poor people if the opposition party forms government in the state next year. He announced that the Congress will implement reforms in both land and economic policy to support the people. "Land illegally held by the CM and ministers, acquired under the pretense of safeguarding land rights, will be redistributed to the poor through a decision in the very first cabinet meeting of the new Congress government," he added. He said that it is his duty to fulfill the declaration made by Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi that the people of Assam will see CM Himanta Biswa Sarma behind the bars. Gogoi accused the BJP-led regime of targeting linguistic and religious minorities with injustice, and launching eviction drives against Bodos, Tiwas, Karbis, Rabhas, Misings and other communities under the guise of development. He also asserted that these series of evictions were carried out in violation of court orders. "Unlike the loot and injustice under the Himanta Biswa Sarma regime, Congress is preparing to bring a new government based on progressive land policies and economic development," Gogoi said. All India Congress Committee General Secretary (in-charge of Assam) Jitendra Singh said the people of Assam now seek change through elections. Following these discussions, economic and political resolutions were adopted. These include comprehensive proposals to reform the economy, rescue indebted Assam, create employment, and ensure inclusive and equitable development for all citizens. "Representatives of various communities have united with Congress, determined to fight the communal politics of BJP and RSS," Gogoi said. After adopting several resolutions, over 200 members from the Bodo, Karbi, Rabha and tea garden communities formally joined the Congress. Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi said, "The state is under the grip of a massive loan burden. The BJP government has rolled out dozens of schemes only to get votes in the election." The range schemes offering direct benefits into people's bank accounts are not helping the beneficiaries in increasing their earnings, he claimed. "On the other hand, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and his close aides have created a parallel economy of syndicates, which collects ₹12,000 crore of cash every year," he alleged. Bordoloi said the Congress has passed an economic resolution for raising the income level of the people, especially those in rural areas. "We aim to increase the income levels of small traders and MSMEs, mainly in rural areas, by taking appropriate policies once we come to power. Solving the mammoth unemployment issue is also a part of the resolution," he added. Talking about the political resolution, Congress former Rajya Sabha MP Ripun Bora said that the CM, his wife and family members, and his close aides have accumulated huge net worth. "They are now carrying out eviction drives everywhere, only to divert people's minds from real issues. The BJP government has evicted indigenous people from 55,000 bighas (over 18,100 acres) of land across Assam. We have taken a resolution to highlight these," he added.

Election Commission urges amendments to ensure smooth polls to GBA corporations
Bengaluru: Karnataka's State Election Commission (SEC) has urged the govt to amend the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act-2024 to plug legislative gaps and enable smooth conduct of elections to the city's newly created multi-corporation civic agency setup. In a letter to additional chief secretary of the urban development department, state election commissioner GS Sangreshi highlighted the absence of clarity in the current law regarding preparation of electoral rolls and conduct of elections. In his letter, he said: "Section 35 of the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act-2024 does not specify whether the SEC should prepare electoral rolls or adopt the Legislative Assembly electoral rolls." "There is a need for the govt to frame rules under Section 68 of the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act-2024 for conducting elections for councillors, mayors, deputy mayors, and standing committee chairpersons," the letter states. Currently, Karnataka Municipal Corporations (Election) Rules-1979 are in use for elections in other municipal corporations. The SEC has recommended their adoption for Bengaluru's five city corporations to maintain procedural uniformity and avoid legal ambiguity. The commission also stressed urgency of govt intervention. "The SEC urged the govt to take prompt action to amend Section 35, frame necessary rules, or adopt existing ones to facilitate the smooth conduct of elections under the Act," the letter stated. "These measures are essential for upholding the democratic process in the newly established multiple city corporations in Bengaluru," it added. The govt is yet to respond to the proposal.
