Baramulla MP Er Rashid Gets Limited Custody Parole To Attend Parliament, His Party Cries Foul Over ‘Harsh Conditions'
His physical presence will be permitted inside Parliament only during session hours. Once proceedings end, he will be sent straight back to jail, even if it means late hours. The court has directed that every rupee of travel, security and related arrangements must be paid by Rashid himself.
This development sparked reactions from his party.
AIP's chief spokesperson Inam un-Nabi expressed a mix of relief and anger. The decision, he said, gives the impression of a reluctant nod rather than recognition of a democratic mandate. 'Yes, he is allowed to attend (Parliament's proceedings). But why only for 12 days? Why should he pay for it all himself? These terms are not only strict, but designed to humiliate,' he said, speaking from Srinagar.
He also questioned the 'inconsistency' in the court's approach. 'This is the same judge who earlier gave him interim bail during elections. He was even allowed an extension to continue campaigning. What changed now? Why has the court drawn a line suddenly and so narrowly?' he asked.
The party is now planning its next move.
According to Inam, the AIP's legal team is preparing to approach the Delhi High Court, challenging what they call a discriminatory parole order. The party argues that a serving MP, duly elected by the people, should be able to participate in the House without punitive conditions that 'reduce his role to a token gesture'.
'We are not asking for privileges. We are asking for fairness. A man who won from jail and who represents lakhs of people should not be shackled in silence inside the very Parliament he was elected to enter,' Inam said.
A former MLA and vocal critic of both mainstream and separatist politics in Kashmir, Engineer Rashid has remained behind bars since 2019 under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act or UAPA, linked to a terror funding case. Despite his imprisonment, he contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and won Baramulla with a stunning margin, defeating high-profile candidates – including J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
Since his victory, public pressure has been growing for his release or at least his presence in Parliament. The court's recent order answers that call partially. But for the AIP and many in Kashmir, the relief is thin and the restrictions speak louder than the permission.
As the Monsoon Session of the Parliament is going on, Rashid may step into the Lok Sabha but not as a free man. Each day, his route will trace the same path: from the iron gates of Tihar to the echoing halls of the Lok Sabha and back again, under guard and silence.

Election Commission Fact Checks Rahul Gandhi Over Karnataka Poll Fraud Allegation
The Election Commission of India on Thursday fact-checked Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, saying that the Congress party did not file any appeal against Karnataka poll results and now claiming wrongdoing on the part of the poll body. Reacting to a video of Rahul Gandhi, the ECI said that the claim made in the social media post was misleading and baseless. "As far as Electoral Rolls of Karnataka Lok Sabha 2024 is concerned, not a single appeal was filed with DM/ CEO of Karnataka, which was a valid legal remedy available to INC under Section 24 of RP Act 1950; and as far as conduct of Lok Sabha elections 2024 is concerned, out of 10 Election Petitions, not a single Election Petition was filed by any losing INC candidate, which was a legal remedy available to INC under Section 80 of RP Act 1951," said the ECI. #ECIFactCheck Claim made in this social media post is misleading and baseless May refer to the link provided below to read in detail the response from CEO Karnataka: Read detail in image below — Election Commission of India (@ECISVEEP) July 24, 2025 Rahul Gandhi's Allegation Earlier on Thursday, LoP Rahul Gandhi said that the Election Commission is not functioning as the Election Commission of India. 'Today, they (ECI) made a statement. This is complete nonsense. The fact of the matter is that the Election Commission is not doing its job. We have concrete, hundred per cent proof of the Election Commission allowing cheating in a seat in Karnataka. It is a hundred per cent proof. We just looked at one constituency, and we found it. I am absolutely convinced that constituency after constituency, this is the drama that is taking place. Thousands and thousands of new voters, aged 50 years, 45 years, 60 and 65 years are added. We have caught them. I want to send a message to the Election Commission: if you think you are going to get away with this, if your officers think they can get away, you are mistaken. We are going to come for you," said LoP Rahul Gandhi. Karnataka CEO's Response The Election Commission also shared data put on X by the Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer. The Karnataka CEO on Thursday also refuted the charges by Rahul Gandhi. Rejecting election cheating charges, the Karnataka CEO said that the electoral rolls are prepared transparently and copies were shared with the recognised parties. "As informed by the Election Commission of India already, Electoral Rolls are shared with all recognised political parties. During Special Summary Revision-2024, which was taken up before the General Elections to Lok Sabha-2024, the copies of draft and final electoral rolls of all 224 assembly constituencies were provided to representatives of all registered and recognised political parties, including the Indian National Congress (INC)," said Chief Electoral Officer of Karnataka V. Anbukumar. Anbukumar pointed out that between the draft and final publication of rolls, about 9.17 lakh claims and objections were received for consideration. His statement also highlighted that no appeals were received at that time, even as the political parties can file an appeal against wrongful additions or deletions in the Electoral Rolls. "As per law, an appeal can be filed against wrongful additions or deletions in the Electoral Rolls. No appeals received," said Anbukumar.

Income Tax dept working on rules for new direct tax law: CBDT chief
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) chief on Thursday said that the Income Tax department has begun drafting rules, forms and procedures for the Income Tax Bill, 2025, PTI reported. The bill, which seeks to replace the current income tax law, was tabled in Parliament in February and reviewed by a parliamentary panel that submitted its report to Parliament on 21 July, the report added. Speaking at an event in Delhi, CBDT chairperson Ravi Agarwal said, 'Work is already underway to give shape to its rules, forms and procedures - a critical next step. These will define how the law functions in practice. And I am confident that just like the bill, these too would reflect our shared commitment to clarity, simplicity and taxpayer convenience.' He noted that the department is aligning its enforcement approach with a principle of 'empathy', aiming to improve voluntary compliance. 'Rather than launching compliance measures at once, we are now enabling taxpayers to review and voluntarily update their filings. This is enforcement with empathy and it reflects the department's evolving mindset to trust persons,' Agarwal was quoted as saying. The CBDT chief also highlighted the department's increasing use of data analytics through its 'Nudge' initiative - short for 'non-intrusive usage of data to guide and enable taxpayers' - which uses behavioural insights and transaction-level data to identify discrepancies in tax filings. The system focuses on issues such as under-reported income, incorrect deductions or suspicious claims. In a separate interview with The Indian Express, Agarwal also stated that the department has started using artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor taxpayer behaviour. This includes tracking activity on online tax portals, identifying high-value transactions and filtering out PANs associated with suspicious claims. The long-term aim, he said, is to build a 360-degree view of individual financial activity and detect behavioural patterns that may indicate tax non-compliance.
