Process under way to study ropeway transport feasibility in Mahabalipuram

CHENNAI: The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), based on a budget announcement by the state this year, has started the process for engaging consultants study the feasibility of introducing a ropeway-based transport in Mahabalipuram, a Unesco World Heritage site, and in hill stations of Ooty and Kodaikanal. The proposal, for which the feasibility will be studied in Mahabalipuram, is for introducing a two-kilometre aerial link between the upcoming new bus terminal and the iconic Shore Temple.
The project is part of a broader initiative by the state government to explore high-altitude cable-propelled transport systems in tourist destinations.
The CMRL has already floated tenders for expressions of interest (EOIs) from consultants. In addition to the Mahabalipuram link, there are also proposals for two ropeway segments in Chennai's IT and coastal corridor: A 1.7-km stretch connecting Taramanai MRTS station to Kandanchavadi Metro, and a further 1.0-km extension from Kandanchavadi to Palavakkam along East Coast Road (ECR). However, no decision has been made on when these would be taken up, sources said. TN's move follows similar initiatives in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Gujarat.

This lush forest is a haven for an extraordinary concentration of primates, including endangered chimpanzees, along with rare pygmy hippos and African forest elephants. Garnett, founder of the Environmental Foundation for Africa (EFA), began his work in the early 2000s, dedicating decades to restoring Tiwai despite civil war, pandemics, deforestation, and poaching. His approach involved convincing local communities to adopt sustainable practices, with tourism revenue now providing jobs and agricultural assistance to them. See More

Gandikota's UNESCO heritage push gains momentum, key recommendations submitted to A.P. CM Chandrababu Naidu

A strong pitch to secure UNESCO World Heritage Site status for Gandikota has been placed before Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu by Andhra Pradeh Twenty Point Programme Implementation Committee Chairperson Lanka Dinakar. The proposal came after a comprehensive review meeting held on Tuesday (July 28, 2025) at the Adventure Sports Academy in Gandikota, aiming to transform the historic site into a global tourism destination. Mr. Dinakar, in an interaction with The Hindu on Wednesday (July 30, 2025), emphasised that Gandikota, often dubbed the 'Grand Canyon of India,' deserves international recognition for its natural beauty and rich heritage. He submitted detailed recommendations for developing a full-fledged tourism circuit, utilising ₹88 crore sanctioned under the Special Assistance for Capital Infrastructure (SASCI) scheme and seeking additional funds from central, state, CSR, and private sources. The report pointed out that while Gandikota currently draws 20,000 visitors monthly, primarily on weekends, it has the potential to attract over one lakh tourists per month. However, existing infrastructure is inadequate and unhygienic. Mr. Dinakar called for a comprehensive master plan instead of piecemeal efforts, to avoid mismatched and obsolete infrastructure. Key recommendations include restoring the historic Sri Ranganatha and Madhavaraya temples with Archaeological Department approval, launching ropeways and boating for adventure tourism, creating food courts and night-stay facilities, promoting homestays, and improving road connectivity. The proposal also highlights the need for enhanced security, sanitation, and cultural infrastructure like amphitheaters and museums, apart from displaying Pemmasani and other dynasties history. Of the 1,100 acres handed over to the A.P. Tourism Development Corporation, 50 acres are earmarked for star hotels. Mr. Dinakar urged swift inter-departmental coordination and direction from the Chief Minister to implement the vision.
