PODCAST: Golf 8.5 is good enough to justify lofty price tag

Eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission has made a huge difference to the 1.4 TSI engine.
After only offering GTI and R derivatives since the Golf 8's arrival in 2021, Volkswagen South African (VWSA) has reverted to only non-performance derivatives for the newly-launched Golf 8.5.
South Africa's poor fuel quality does not allow VWSA to bring in the performance models at the moment, leading to the decision that some other derivative is better than no derivative at all.
But what been a hot topic of debate is the Golf 8.5's starting price of R580 900. This top model comes in at R680 100, with the Golf 8 GTI still on sale for R853 400.
Golf 8.5 makes a Pitstop
In this week's episode of The Citizen Motoring's Pitstop podcast we look at what the Golf 8.5 offers for that price. Road test editor Mark Jones experienced the hatchback on a recent launch drive and comes to the conclusion that he'll fork out that money with a smile.
The Golf 8.5 is offered in four models derivatives; the Life, Life Plus, R-Line and R-Line Plus. They are all powered by the tried and trusted 1.4 TSI turbo petrol engine that produces 110kW of power and 250Nm of torque.
What does give the mill a new leash on life is the eight-speed Tiptronic transmission replacing the DSG box from before. According to Jones this is a supersmooth combination.

Great fuel economy
VW claims the Golf 8.5 will sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds on its way to a top speed of 216km/h. VW says it will only sip 6.3 litres of petrol per 100km.
Standard specification on the entry-level Life derivatives includes 16 inch alloy wheels, 10.3 inch infotainment system, 10 colour ambient lighting dashboard and 10 inch integrated digital cockpit.
The top-of-the-range R-Line Plus comes with IQ Matrix LED headlights with illuminated VW front logo, heated and cooling front seats, auto high beam, Vienna leather seats with R-Line logo in front, paddles in brushed stainless steel and 18 inch alloy wheels.

R4. 3m buys you the fastest-accelerating Mercedes-AMG ever: GT 63 S E Performance now on sale

The new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance is now on sale in South Africa. Image: Supplied Sprinting from 0-100km/h in a claimed 2.8 seconds, the new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance elevates the brand to almost hypercar levels of performance. Now on sale in South Africa, the new two-door flagship is yours for R4,369,287, and surprisingly that doesn't make it the most expensive Benz on the market. The G63 (R4.45m) and S63 (R4.6m) are even more detrimental to your cashflow. South Africans already had an early preview of the GT 63 S E at the 2025 Simola Hillclimb in Knysna in early May, where it won the road and supercar category with Clint Weston behind the wheel. But what makes it tick? The new S E Performance model, not to be confused with the regular GT 63, pairs a powerful 4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine with a 150kW rear-mounted electric motor for system outputs of 600kW and 1,420Nm. The result is a car that accelerates even quicker than the GT Black Series and F1-derived Mercedes-AMG One. The hybrid system produces a combined 600kW. Image: Supplied It's even ferocious at Gauteng altitudes, with independent performance tester Mark Jones having achieved a 0-100km/h time of 2.76 seconds at the Gerotek testing facility. For what it's worth, the new AMG hybrid model can also travel up to 13km on electric power alone, thanks to its 6.1 kWh battery, which is mounted above the rear axle. The new GT 63 hybrid model rolls on 21-inch alloy wheels with a five-spoke design, and also boasts some impressive aerodynamic features. Chief among these is an active aerodynamic element beneath the front bumper, that can extend downwards to create the Venturi effect, effectively sucking the car onto the road at higher speeds. Chassis wizardry includes AMG's Active Ride Control suspension with semi-active roll stabilisation, as well as active rear-axle steering that greatly enhances agility at low and high speeds. AMG's ceramic composite braking system, with six-piston callipers at the front, is part of the deal too. The GT 63 S E Performance cabin has unique displays. Image: Supplied Moving inside, the 2+2 cabin comes with electrically adjustable AMG sports seats with three massage programmes, and there is a large selection of upholsteries to choose from. Furthermore, the MBUX multimedia system has numerous AMG and hybrid-specific displays and functions. The new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance is on sale now at a price of R4,369,287, which includes a five-year or 100,000km service and maintenance plan. IOL

Around 20 000 VW workers agree to buyout amid overhaul

German carmaker Volkswagen's logo is seen at a VW dealership in the Queens borough of New York. File picture: Shannon Around 20 000 Volkswagen workers in Germany have so far agreed to take voluntary redundancy as part of a major overhaul aimed at cutting costs, the struggling auto titan said Tuesday. Around 20 000 Volkswagen workers in Germany have so far agreed to take voluntary redundancy as part of a major overhaul aimed at cutting costs, the struggling auto titan said Tuesday. Europe's biggest carmaker, hit by fierce competition in key market China and a stuttering shift to electric vehicles, struck a deal with unions last year for massive job cuts in its home market. About 20 000 workers had so far accepted redundancy offers, out of a total of 35 000 due to be shed by 2030 under the agreement, the 10-brand group said. The jobs are being cut at the carmaker's core Volkswagen brand, and amount to about 30% of its workforce in Germany. "We are on track," VW board member Gunnar Kilian said at a meeting with staff at the company's historic headquarters in Wolfsburg, western Germany. He said the "socially responsible" job cuts as well as reductions in factory costs added up to "measurable progress". Volkswagen, whose brands also include Audi, Skoda and Porsche, dropped a bombshell last year when it said it was mulling closing factories in Germany for the first time in its history. But after months of talks with unions and a series of walkouts, it decided against shuttering any plants, instead striking the agreement to cut jobs through voluntary redundancies. AFP
