R4. 3m buys you the fastest-accelerating Mercedes-AMG ever: GT 63 S E Performance now on sale
Image: Supplied
Sprinting from 0-100km/h in a claimed 2.8 seconds, the new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance elevates the brand to almost hypercar levels of performance.
Now on sale in South Africa, the new two-door flagship is yours for R4,369,287, and surprisingly that doesn't make it the most expensive Benz on the market. The G63 (R4.45m) and S63 (R4.6m) are even more detrimental to your cashflow.
South Africans already had an early preview of the GT 63 S E at the 2025 Simola Hillclimb in Knysna in early May, where it won the road and supercar category with Clint Weston behind the wheel.
But what makes it tick?
The new S E Performance model, not to be confused with the regular GT 63, pairs a powerful 4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine with a 150kW rear-mounted electric motor for system outputs of 600kW and 1,420Nm.
The result is a car that accelerates even quicker than the GT Black Series and F1-derived Mercedes-AMG One.
The hybrid system produces a combined 600kW.
Image: Supplied
It's even ferocious at Gauteng altitudes, with independent performance tester Mark Jones having achieved a 0-100km/h time of 2.76 seconds at the Gerotek testing facility.
For what it's worth, the new AMG hybrid model can also travel up to 13km on electric power alone, thanks to its 6.1 kWh battery, which is mounted above the rear axle.
The new GT 63 hybrid model rolls on 21-inch alloy wheels with a five-spoke design, and also boasts some impressive aerodynamic features.
Chief among these is an active aerodynamic element beneath the front bumper, that can extend downwards to create the Venturi effect, effectively sucking the car onto the road at higher speeds.
Chassis wizardry includes AMG's Active Ride Control suspension with semi-active roll stabilisation, as well as active rear-axle steering that greatly enhances agility at low and high speeds.
AMG's ceramic composite braking system, with six-piston callipers at the front, is part of the deal too.
The GT 63 S E Performance cabin has unique displays.
Image: Supplied
Moving inside, the 2+2 cabin comes with electrically adjustable AMG sports seats with three massage programmes, and there is a large selection of upholsteries to choose from.
Furthermore, the MBUX multimedia system has numerous AMG and hybrid-specific displays and functions.
The new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance is on sale now at a price of R4,369,287, which includes a five-year or 100,000km service and maintenance plan.

Minister Macpherson to address media as exposé of IDT officials' bribery bid reverberates across SA
Minister of Public Works Dean Macpherson is expected to respond to the details of an explosive exposé by Daily Maverick of an attempted bribery of one of its investigative journalists by the suspended Independent Development Trust CEO and her spokesperson. ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula has called for suspended Independent Development Trust (IDT) CEO Tebogo Malaka and her spokesperson Phasha Makgolane to face the law 'if they are implicated in bribery'. Meanwhile, Minister of Public Works Dean Macpherson is expected to address the media on Thursday following an explosive exposé by Daily Maverick of an attempted bribery of one of its investigative journalists by the two IDT officials. On Tuesday, Daily Maverick carried video footage and recordings of this blatant attempt to bribe its journalist, Pieter-Louis Myburgh. Suspended IDT CEO Malaka and spokesperson Makgolane attempted to pay Daily Maverick investigative journalist Pieter-Louis Myburgh R60,000 in cash over the weekend to suppress an investigation into Malaka's personal dealings and questionable IDT contracts. The IDT, a very important, if lesser known, government body, spends upwards of R4-billion each year on social infrastructure projects, such as building schools and clinics, and falls under the Ministry of Public Works. Macpherson last week released a forensic report into a R836-million oxygen tender awarded to a ghost company that was first exposed by Daily Maverick. The report recommended that Malaka be suspended. Malaka was placed on precautionary suspension on Friday. Now Macpherson's remarks at Wednesday's briefing are expected to set the tone for the government's broader response. The attempted bribe, which took place during a meeting in Stellenbosch, was captured on camera. Myburgh photographed the cash, delivered in a white Dior shopping bag, and recorded video and audio of the exchange. Makgolane also sweetened the offer with promises of R100,000 in monthly payments and influence over IDT tenders. In a statement on the briefing, his department confirmed that Macpherson would respond directly to the 'serious allegations by Daily Maverick that Malaka sought to bribe journalist Pieter-Louis Myburgh'. Posting to social platform X yesterday morning, Macpherson said he planned to consult with the IDT board later in the day. The statement also warned that the matter appeared to be part of 'what is now likely a paid-for public campaign aimed at discrediting [Macpherson's] efforts to bring stability and good governance to the entity'. It suggests deeper political and institutional tensions may be at play, especially as Macpherson has been spearheading reform efforts at the IDT. On 22 January, the EFF accused Macpherson of 'brazen and corrupt interference' in IDT affairs, citing an incident where he allegedly instructed staff to process a questionable payment to a construction company. The party claimed that Macpherson had unfairly targeted Malaka and used the PSA oxygen plant tender as a pretext for political interference. EFF secretary-general Marshall Dlamini opened a criminal case of corruption against the minister on 22 January 2025. IDT promises full response While remaining tight-lipped on the details, IDT spokesperson Lerato Modisana said the IDT acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations. The IDT board convened on Wednesday, 6 August, to 'deliberate comprehensively on these matters'. However, Modisana said the IDT was not at this stage in a position to respond to specific media enquiries. The organisation pledged to uphold 'transparency, accountability and good governance' and promised that 'a detailed response will be provided in due course, once the board has fully considered all the relevant facts and implications'. What everyone wants to know Daily Maverick's exposé has garnered significant attention from other media, including radio broadcasts. Readers applauded Myburgh's efforts, while some wondered at the sheer audacity of the brazen bribery attempt. Reader Eddie Maulson summed it up: 'One is gobsmacked at the lack of thought that went into this outrageous attempt at bribery, not to mention the effrontery that these individuals show in their lamentable assumption that they could bribe a man of PLM's integrity in such a crass manner.' A history of red flags Malaka was already under scrutiny, having been placed on precautionary suspension days before the footage emerged on 1 August 2025, following the release of a PwC forensic report into the R836-million PSA oxygen plant project. That report, spurred by Daily Maverick investigations in October 2024, recommended disciplinary action for Malaka, citing her failure to prevent or address serious violations in the project's procurement. The IDT has long struggled with governance and accountability, facing repeated criticism over failed projects and procurement lapses, eroding public confidence in the agency's leadership. DM

German EV showdown: Bold new Mercedes GLC and BMW iX3 to debut in September
The upcoming Mercedes GLC with EQ Technology (left) and new BMW iX3 both aim to make bold design statements. Image: Supplied There's a German electric SUV showdown looming, and it starts at the IAA Mobility Summit in early September when the new BMW iX3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC with EQ Technology will be revealed to the world for the first time. Not only will the two battery-powered midsize SUVs be direct competitors when they hit the market, but both will usher in new design and engineering eras for their respective carmakers. The Mercedes GLC electric debuts a brand new design language for the firm's electric vehicles, with the softer lines of its current EQ models having faced criticism for their lack of imagination and identity. To whet our appetites, Mercedes released a teaser image this week, showing the new upright, and more traditional-looking, 'grille' that will feature on its electric GLC. The GLC with EQ Technology replaces the EQC and features a more traditional look. Image: Supplied Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ As EVs do not require a grille for cooling, the GLC's centrepiece is purely aesthetic and features a chrome frame surrounding a smoked-glass-effect lattice structure and integrated contour lighting. An illuminated version will also be offered, featuring 942 backlit dots and animation sequences. The battery-powered GLC with EQ Technology replaces the EQC SUV, with Mercedes moving to a more integrated naming convention for its models. While it shares a name with its combustion-engined GLC sibling, the electric model will feature a completely different platform, in the form of Merc's upcoming MB-EA dedicated electric vehicle architecture. Technical details are still under wraps, but CarExpert reports that the new electric GLC is likely to offer a WLTP driving range of more than 800km, while the most powerful version could produce over 500kW. BMW EV revolution loading Either way, the GLC is going to face some stiff competition from its Bavarian rival, with BMW stating that the new iX3 will be one of the most significant model introductions in the company's entire history. Ushering in the 'Neue Klasse' family of vehicles, it claims to make huge strides in EV technology as well as sustainability and connectivity. The new BMW iX3 ushers in the 'Neue Klasse' architecture. Camouflaged model shown. Image: Supplied The architecture incorporates a completely new battery system and drivetrain, all geared towards maximum efficiency and reduced weight. BMW says the iX3 50 xDrive flagship will boast a WLTP range of up to 800km, and thanks to a 400kW maximum charging capability, owners will be able to add around 350km of range in just 10 minutes at a fast-charging station. Furthermore, its Gen6 powertrain technology and BMW Dynamic Performance Control software stack aim to raise the dynamic potential of electric powertrains to a new level. The iX3 also debuts the new BMW Panoramic iDrive cockpit interface, which displays all relevant driving information in the driver's ideal line of sight. 'With the all-new #BMW iX3, we bring our revolutionary technologies into series production for the first time, and we can hardly wait to see it in action on the road. All future BMW models, regardless of powertrain type, will benefit from the innovations and technology clusters of the Neue Klasse," says Mike Reichelt, Head of Neue Klass BMW. IOL Motoring

Court hits the brakes: Mercedes repossesses R1. 6m GLE after owner's 6-year legal joyride
The North Gauteng High Court has ordered that Mercedes-Benz can repossess a 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE 63 S AMG valued at over R1.6 million after its owner defaulted on payments and ignored a settlement agreement. Image: Ron | IOL The North Gauteng High Court has ordered that Mercedes-Benz can repossess a 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE 63 S AMG valued at over R1.6 million after its owner defaulted on payments and ignored a settlement agreement. The six-year battle over the car was not straightforward. Leruma Thobejane, who represented himself in court while fully robed, alleged that Mercedes-Benz 'had fraudulently approached the court for the issuing of a warrant for delivery of the vehicle in September 2023, whilst being fully aware that that matter was on appeal before the Supreme Court of Appeal'. In the order, the judge found that 'in my view the warrant was issued in terms of the court order, and not in breach thereof'. The court noted that Thobejane had failed to meet his payment obligations. 'The respondent however did not dispute the allegations in the applicant's attorney's affidavit that he breached the settlement order, and that he did not make the required payments in terms thereof,' the ruling stated. The judge added: 'The applicant has already been waiting for payment in terms of the settlement agreement since September 30, 2021, and the respondent remains in possession of the vehicle. In my view relief that the applicant is entitled to, should not further be frustrated by reason the applicant's attorney's reliance on an incorrect subrule.' Thobejane was partially successful in having a previous warrant of execution set aside. However, ultimately, the court authorised Mercedes-Benz to repossess the vehicle under its latest ruling. Next Stay Close ✕ The dispute dates back to 2019, when Mercedes-Benz Finance instituted proceedings against Thobejane after he defaulted on payments for the vehicle. The credit agreement stipulated ownership would remain with Mercedes-Benz Finance until full payment was made. It also provided that, in the event of default, the company could cancel the agreement, repossess the vehicle, and claim any shortfall after resale. Despite demands, Thobejane fell into arrears, owing more than R1.36m by the time summons were issued. After litigation and discovery, the parties reached a settlement in August 2021, which was made an order of court in March 2023. The settlement agreement required Thobejane to make five consecutive monthly payments totalling R1.5m plus interest and costs. It included a clause that if he breached the payment terms, the full outstanding balance would immediately become due, and Mercedes-Benz Finance could apply for judgment and repossession – rights to which Thobejane consented.
