Renewable energy push sees NTPC get nod to invest Rs 20,000 crore in green arms
NEW DELHI: In a big push for green energy, the Cabinet on Wednesday granted approval to state-run NTPC to invest up to Rs 20,000 crore in its green energy subsidiaries, a sharp rise from the earlier cap of Rs 7,500 crore.
It also allowed NLC India Ltd to invest Rs 7,000 crore in NLC India Renewables Ltd, its wholly owned subsidiary.
I&B minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said work is in progress to increase NTPC's green energy capacity from 6GW at present to 26GW, with the target for 2032 being 60GW. Wednesday's decisions will "facilitate accelerated development of renewable projects in the country," he added.
The relaxation in investment limit for NTPC will enable it to infuse capital into NTPC Green Energy Ltd, which, in turn, will support investments by NGEL in NTPC Renewable Energy and other JVs & subsidiaries for scaling up renewable energy capacity.
On X, home minister Amit Shah said: "Increasing investment limits of NTPC & NGEL in the sector to Rs 20,000 crore will speed up our journey towards achieving the goal of producing 60GW green energy by 2032.... On the other hand, special exemption to NLC India Ltd will enable it to invest Rs 7,000 crore in green energy, standing out as our firm commitment to creating a greener Bharat and healthier planet."
Vaishnaw said India has achieved a key milestone by ensuring that non-fossil fuel sources account for 50% of its installed electricity capacity, which was achieved five years ahead of its Nationally Determined Contributions target under Paris Agreement.

The target now is to increase non-fossil fuel generation capacity to 500 GW by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2070.
On the decision for NLCIL, the government said it would enable the government-owned entity to invest Rs 7,000 crore in NIRL and lead to NIRL investing in various projects directly or through formation of joint ventures, without the requirement of prior approval under the existing delegation of powers.
The decision is expected to reinforce India's position as a green energy leader by reducing dependence on fossil fuels, lowering coal imports and enhancing reliability of 24x7 power supply across country.

Chilla elevated road much delayed, now pillar steel found subpar
Noida: A long-delayed infrastructure project meant to ease traffic between Delhi and Noida has come under fresh scrutiny after the Noida Authority flagged the use of substandard steel in its construction. The quality of steel used in the Rs 893-crore Chilla Elevated Road, under construction by the Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation Limited (UPSBCL), was flagged during a recent review by Noida Authority. The inspection revealed that a non-approved grade of steel was being used in the piling work for the project. On Friday, CEO Lokesh M expressed dissatisfaction with the UPSBCL for using substandard steel in the pillars and issued a notice to the construction agency, directing it to replace the material with the approved grade of steel. You Can Also Check: Noida AQI | Weather in Noida | Bank Holidays in Noida | Public Holidays in Noida UPSBCL general manager Sandeep Gupta told TOI that the particular brand of steel being used is an NHAI-approved supplier listed under national specifications. "The steel used meets the required BIS standard for high-strength deformed bars used in reinforced concrete and is compliant with IRC and MORTH specifications applicable to the project," Gupta said. He added that the brand is widely accepted and used by other public sector undertakings, including the Indian Railways, UP PWD, and the Greater Noida Authority. He also said that regular third-party lab testing is conducted to verify the steel's mechanical and chemical properties, and test reports are available for review. UPSBCL, however, has assured the Noida Authority that it will discontinue use of the current steel brand. Going forward, only materials from reputed suppliers such as SAIL, TATA, RINL, or JSPL will be used for the rest of the work. While only 6% of fresh work has been completed since construction resumed in March this year, the overall progress stands at approximately 20%, including earlier work done before the project stalled in 2021. The six-lane, 5.9-km elevated corridor aims to connect the Chilla Regulator near Mayur Vihar to the Mahamaya Flyover in Noida, offering relief to thousands of daily commuters who currently face up to an hour of congestion along the Delhi-Noida Link Road. First proposed in 2012 and inaugurated by chief minister Yogi Adityanath in 2019, the Chilla elevated road has faced years of delay due to funding bottlenecks, the relocation of a GAIL gas pipeline, and the Covid pandemic. No construction took place between 2021 and early 2025. The project resumed only after MG Contractors was appointed in December 2024, having submitted the lowest bid—7% below the estimated cost. Once completed, the corridor is expected to significantly ease congestion near Film City, Sector 14A/15A, and improve access to Greater Noida, Kalindi Kunj, and Faridabad.

Railways got over 19,000 complaints for bad food in 5 yrs, fines in 3,137 cases
The Railways received over 19,000 complaints related to supply of bad quality food in trains in the last five years, according to the data submitted in the Rajya Sabha Friday. The data shows that while the number of cases has marginally reduced from 7,026 in financial year 2023-24 (FY24) to 6,645 in FY25, it is much higher than 253 complaints recorded in FY21. In a written response to the questions from CPI (M) MP John Brittas, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that prompt and appropriate punitive actions, including imposition of fines, disciplinary action, counselling, warning, etc., were taken in case any instance of adulterated/unhygienic food or passenger complaint was reported. According to the data, out of 19,427 complaints of bad quality food in trains received in the last five financial years, fines were imposed in 3,137 cases. In 9,627 cases, warnings were issued and in 4,467 cases, the vendors were 'advised suitably'. The data shows that the licence of one entity was terminated (in FY21) for supplying bad quality food to passengers. Apart from this, 2,195 complaints were found to be 'not substantiated' and resolved on board. The Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC) floats tenders to select service providers for provision of onboard catering services in trains, including Vande Bharat and other long distance trains. These tenders are awarded through a competitive bidding process. Vaishnaw said that at present, contracts of clusters of trains have been awarded by IRCTC to 20 entities. He listed some of the key measures taken to improve the quality of food in trains including supply of meals from designated base kitchen, installation of CCTV cameras in base kitchens for monitoring, deployment of food safety supervisors at base kitchen, deployment of on-board IRCTC supervisors on train, regular food sampling, surprise inspections by Railway/IRCTC officials, etc. Dheeraj Mishra is a Principal correspondent with The Indian Express, Business Bureau.
