PATIALA: A technology developed by a research team at Punjabi University here enables the conversion of Punjabi texts into Braille, empowering visually impaired individuals to access written content in their native language.
The system, developed by Charanjeev Singh Saroya from the department of computer science and engineering under the guidance of Dr Kawaljit Singh, integrates advanced features such as Gurmukhi-to-Braille transcription, automatic font conversion, an extensive linguistic corpus, and text-to-speech functionality. "The primary goal is to provide a seamless digital pathway for visually impaired individuals to engage with information in their mother tongue," said Kawaljit Singh, while highlighting the transformative potential of the technology.
Kawaljit Singh described the technology as a revolutionary step towards making knowledge accessible to the visually impaired in Punjabi. By enabling swift and accurate conversion of Gurmukhi script into Braille, this innovation promotes self-reliance and enhances the quality of life for its users, he added.
Elaborating on the system's capabilities, Charanjeev Saroya noted the ability to instantly convert Punjabi text into Grade-1 and Grade-2 Braille with exceptional precision - 99.9% accuracy for Grade-1 and 99.7% for Grade-2.

Grade-1 Braille involves character-by-character transcription, where each Punjabi letter is mapped to a corresponding Braille symbol. For Grade-2 Braille, sophisticated coding patterns enhance efficiency, catering to more complex linguistic structures. The system accepts Unicode-based text inputs and delivers Braille output in BRF (Braille Ready Format) or text format, compatible with screen readers and Braille printers.
"This system will not only convert Gurmukhi into Braille, but it will work beyond this through the process called contraction, which will make the transcribed text less voluminous," said a researcher associated with the project.

In Karnataka, Shakti scheme ticket count set to cross 500-crore mark

Bengaluru: On Monday, the Shakti scheme — offering free bus travel for women in the state — is set to cross the 500-crore ridership milestone. To mark the occasion, chief minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy DK Shivakumar will travel in a city bus and personally issue tickets to women passengers. Transport minister Ramalinga Reddy told TOI that at the district level, committees overseeing implementation of the five guarantee schemes will celebrate the milestone by distributing sweets and flowers. The Shakti scheme was the first of the five guarantees launched by Congress govt. From June 11, 2023 to July 11, 2025, the state's four road transport corporations — KSRTC, BMTC, NWKRTC, and KKRTC — issued over 497 crore tickets. The corporations have spent a whopping Rs 12,614 crore to provide free travel facilities for women on ordinary bus services. Out of nearly 25,000 buses, women are allowed to travel in over 20,000. In June this year, conductors issued more than 73 lakh tickets daily to women availing of the free travel benefit. In the first month of the scheme's launch, RTCs issued over 10 crore tickets, incurring an expenditure of Rs 250 crore. In the second month, the number of tickets issued rose to nearly 20 crore, and the cost reached Rs 453 crore. Patronage continued to grow in the following months. The highest number of tickets — over 22 crore — was issued in May 2025, accounting for Rs 670 crore. Following an upward revision in bus fares in Jan 2025, the expenditure to provide free travel under the scheme saw a significant jump. Reddy said, "Naturally, when there is a revision in bus fares, the cost of providing benefits under the scheme increases. During festive seasons and holidays, we also see increased patronage. As promised, the state govt has been supporting RTCs by reimbursing the expenditure. Except for a pending amount of Rs 2,750 crore, RTCs have received the rest of the funds spent under the scheme." He stated that the govt has extended additional financial support to RTCs by providing a loan of Rs 2,000 crore and facilitating the induction of new buses. "After coming to power, we have taken measures to induct 5,800 new buses and recruit 10,000 staff, including 1,000 on compassionate grounds. RTCs currently have a liability of Rs 4,000 crore due to the lack of support from the previous BJP govt," Reddy added.

Gujarat high court quashes criminal complaint against company for defaulting on CSR responsibilities

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat high court quashed a criminal complaint filed by the registrar of companies (ROC) against a company on charges of non-compliance with corporate social responsibility (CSR) rules, specifically for inadequate disclosure and under-expenditure on CSR activities. Acknowledging the shift in legislative approach, the HC quashed the complaint and referred the issue to the adjudicating authority to fix the penalty on the company. This decision came after the central govt in 2020 amended the Companies Act, decriminalising the offence and reducing the punishment to a fine. In this case, the ROC filed a complaint under the Companies Act in a city court in 2017 against KHS Machinery Pvt Ltd for defaulting on its CSR obligations for the financial year 2014-15. The principal district judge initiated proceedings against the company. The company contended that it constituted a CSR committee and framed its own CSR policy in accordance with the statutory mandate. In line with its CSR obligations, the company began spending amounts towards social causes as stipulated in its CSR policy. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Các chỉ số toàn cầu đang biến động — Đã đến lúc giao dịch! The quashing petition was pending since 2017. When it came up for hearing, the company contended that the case pertained to Section 134(8) of the Companies Act and the said offence was decriminalised in 2020, with the punishment reduced to a fine. It prayed that the benefit of reduction in punishment should be given with retrospective effect. It also cited a Supreme Court order in this regard. After hearing the case, Justice J C Doshi quashed the complaint and ordered the issue to be sent to the authority concerned for fixing the penalty. The HC stated, "Evidently, the benefit of decriminalisation of the offence ought to ensure to the benefit of the petitioner, in as much as the Amendment Act passed by the central govt has decriminalised the punishment in cases pertaining to CSR violations and reduced the consequences to the imposition of a fine only. There appears to be no justifiable reason to deny the retrospective benefit of such decriminalisation to the petitioner–accused."
