This is the year Madden franchise mode not only gets back to where it was more than a decade ago—it surpasses anything we've ever seen in video game football.
EA dropped their deep dive into Madden 26 franchise mode, and there are a ton of promising things included. Specifically, there are 10 excerpts that sent me through the roof with excitement.

1. Halftime Shows with Real Highlights & Social Integration
EA said: 'The wait for highlights from other games… It's almost over! You'll see highlights from across the league in the Halftime Report, bringing the world around you to life in Franchise mode."
Do you all have any idea how long I've been begging for a halftime show and weekly wrap-up show within franchise mode? As I read this, I felt like my requests (and the thousands from others) were finally heard. That was a recurring theme as I read through the deep dive.
The fact that the highlights will be present for CPU-vs-CPU games adds a ton of immersion in your franchise experience. Here's the potential gotcha in this improvement: if the highlights are repetitive and canned sequences that repeat every week, it's not going to be much of an addition. Hopefully, that's not the case.2. Watch Your Friends' Highlights Live in Multi-User Leagues
EA said: 'It doesn't end with CPU highlights. For the first time in any NFL video game, you'll also see your friends' highlights appear at halftime in a multi-user online league. When a friend's highlight is chosen for the show, their customized Player Card will appear on-screen. If it's a highlight from a game with two other players in your online league, you'll see each of their player cards.'
The CPU-vs-CPU highlights are great, especially if they aren't repetitive, but to also have highlights from user-played games in online multi-player leagues takes things to another level. This is ideal for content creators and any serious franchise mode gamers who want to dive headfirst into their leagues.3. Scott Hanson as Halftime Report Host
EA said: "One of the most exciting elements of our Halftime Report is the host, Scott Hanson. Who could be better to speak about games around the league than the beloved host?!'
I wanted to see an NFL RedZone-style presentation in Madden 26. I'm not sure if we'll get that or if Hanson was scanned and included in the game. Even if it's just his voice, this is a strong addition that adds to the overall appeal.
4. On-Demand Weekly Recap with Game Highlights
EA said: 'We extended our ability to show CPU highlights in the Halftime Report to our Weekly Recap. This new feature is available on-demand in the Franchise hub as a way to experience highlights from across the league. Just like the Halftime Report, the Weekly Recap will also include highlights from other players in your multi-user online league. You'll also get to see your own highlights as well. It's our way of bringing sights to the stats. Scott Hanson also hosts the Weekly Recap, sharing insights from matchups across the league.'
Having this on-demand is a wrinkle that I never expected to see added. I do wonder how long the recap will be and if it will feel layered. But in any case, it is great to see EA add this much substance to franchise mode.
5. Heavier Weather
EA said: 'In Franchise mode, we've fine-tuned the weather in every city, from Buffalo to Miami to Seattle, so you'll experience the kinds of conditions you'd expect in real life. Whether it's a sunny day in LA or a snowstorm in Green Bay, the weather will feel authentic to each location. We've reworked everything from average temperatures to precipitation rates. If you're heading to Buffalo in January, it'll feel just as tough as it does in real life. This year, weather isn't just a visual feature, it's deeply woven into gameplay. We've completely overhauled how the weather looks and how it plays. Every existing weather condition has been enhanced, and we've added brand-new dynamic environments like heavy snow with fog or intense rain with fog. When the weather shifts, your strategy needs to as well. Dense fog will reduce visibility, making it tougher to read the field and execute passes—just like it would challenge a real NFL quarterback. Slippery conditions impact every player: receivers might stumble off the line, linemen and defenders can lose footing during explosive moves, and quick cuts might not land cleanly. All of this is tied directly to a player's Change of Direction (COD) rating and the strength of the precipitation.'
In the past, weather in Madden has been all cosmetic. Based on this information, it sounds like this is changing. It may seem like a trivial addition, but it's all about the sum of the parts. All of these changes give your franchise mode an identity and life. When you're playing through an entire season with weather, highlights and all of those things, it can make the entire experience more memorable.
6. Three Unique Broadcast Packages for Primetime Games
EA said: 'We're thrilled to finally give our players the experience of three primetime broadcast packages in addition to our new Madden package. Each of the primetime packages is composed of premium assets with a different look, sound, and feel for Thursday, Sunday, and Monday night games. The inclusion of four different broadcast packages is beneficial for the variety of sights and sounds you'll see and hear as you play from season to season. For example, you'll immediately notice the score bug as one of many visual elements with a distinct look for each package. We've also included custom broadcast graphics for pre-games, drive starters, and touchdowns. There's also package-specific wipes for players and teams. Last year, we introduced 3 commentary teams. This year, we assigned each one to a primetime package:
The three broadcast teams aren't new, but the specific assignments are a nice touch. It can help to give each game a special feel.
7. Massively Upgraded Team Builder with Logos, Relocations, and Uniforms
EA said: 'Our team has been hard at work polishing and improving the overall site performance. Team Builder now has a completely new look and the site is 2X faster. Overall render performance is greatly improved, so Team Builder will now work on a wider array of devices and lower end machines. You now have an upload limit of 5 MB per team. This means you can upload as many custom images and textures as you want until you hit the 5 MB limit, increasing your creative power.'
The expansion of Team Builder to allow deeper customization is excellent. When you couple that with more options in expansion, it's another boost to the franchise mode experience.
8. Wear and Tear System Tracks Every Hit and Adds Strategic Depth
EA said: Madden NFL 26 adds a new feature called Wear and Tear—a system that tracks every hit a player takes in a game and accumulates those impacts across the season. It's designed to reflect real-life player health, forcing you to manage workloads realistically. Relying too heavily on a few players—like giving Derrick Henry 40 carries or running Lamar Jackson 30 times—will carry consequences. Inspired by ideas from the College Football team, Wear and Tear launches with Dynamic Subs, letting you make on-the-fly substitutions during pre-play, and full slider customization for Franchise mode."
When the Wear and Tear system was introduced in College Football 25, I made mention that the feature would be excellent in Madden, and here we are. I'm hoping it's a bit more strict and true-to-life with the option to tweak sensitivity.
9. Dynamic Injury Recovery Windows Instead of Fixed Timetables
EA said: 'Injuries also now behave more realistically, with statuses that evolve over time based on various factors. A player's condition might improve—or get worse—week to week. This change builds on the existing Weekly Strategy and Training system, adding a new layer of unpredictability to player availability.'
I know Clint Oldenburg, former NFL player and EA developer, was tired of me bringing this up every year. I've long wanted to see injury presentation changed. I never liked seeing a complete diagnosis and expected time out for injured players within minutes. This new system adds a layer of mystery to injury severity, and there are also situations where injury time can be decreased or increased.
10. Trainers Now Have Abilities That Affect Recovery and Risk
EA said: 'Your Trainer plays a key role in keeping your team healthy through Trainer Abilities. These abilities can boost how much players recover each week, lower the chance of in-game injuries, and improve the odds that injured players will be cleared to play. Just like Coach Abilities, you'll choose which trainer abilities to activate each week in Weekly Strategy. Whether it's during practice or on game day, your trainer helps you make smarter choices to protect your roster. You'll now have more control than ever over player health. Decisions like how hard you train and when to give players rest days will have lasting effects. Having the right trainer on staff can be the difference between a healthy lineup or a team battling injuries all season long.'
I love to see trainers and every member of the team's staff impacting your experience realistically. If there was a meeting between the devs and the question was asked: 'How can we make trainers matter?'—this addition was a smart answer. Hopefully, this functions as described, as it will be a piece of what is shaping up to be the best Madden franchise mode in series history.

Rams QB Matthew Stafford named to 'Bag' Hall of Fame
Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford may have to wait to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but he is already on a media-made version for a particular reason. ESPN's Bill Barnwell created the "Bag" Hall of Fame to "reward the players who did the best job of maximizing their leverage and getting paid for their ability." Barnwell clarified that this isn't a list of overpaid players, either. Advertisement Stafford was one of eight players bestowed this honor, and his "calling card" is as "the last of the great previous-CBA quarterbacks." Barnwell explained that Stafford was among the highest-paid rookie quarterbacks before the 2011 CBA instituted the rookie wage scale for picks, which significantly reduced contracts for top prospects. Taken with the first overall pick in 2009, Stafford's rookie deal was particularly eye-opening. When he agreed to terms on a six-year, $72 million deal with the Lions, the $41.7 million in guarantees was the largest figure for any player in league history, topping the $41 million defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth had been guaranteed by Washington earlier that offseason. You can understand why NFL owners didn't love the idea of guaranteeing an inexperienced unknown quantity like Stafford more than the experienced, proven veteran Haynesworth. Barnwell went on to note how the Lions restructured Stafford's deal several times as they had to constantly pay their top-drafted rookies (like Calvin Johnson and Ndamukong Suh) exorbitant pre-2011 deals. Stafford signed four extensions through his career, from "a relatively player-friendly extension (three years, $53 million deal)" in 2013 to a five-year, $135 million contract in 2017 that made him the then-highest-paid player in league history to a four-year, $160 million extension in 2022 following a trade to the Rams that ended in a Super Bowl that same year. However, Barnwell wrote that the 2025 offseason is "what got Stafford over the hump as a Bag Hall of Famer." Before the 2024 season, the Rams moved most of his guarantees forward by one year. Having already earned more than $364 million in his career and $27 million in (mostly) unguaranteed money coming in the 2025 season, he decided the Rams needed to pay up for him return at age 37. ... Forget trying to play for a winner to eke out one more ring: He threatened leaving for one of the worst teams in the league, while downgrading his offensive coordinator and offensive line, if the Rams weren't willing to give him a raise. That is Hall of Fame dedication to the bottom line. In the end, the Rams and Stafford found common ground. While Stafford didn't get a multiyear guarantee, he stuck around in Los Angeles for $40 million in 2025. Would he have really gone to play for the Giants? Some people would call that a bluff. Bag Hall of Famers would call that smart negotiating. Call it what you want, but Stafford and the Rams both got what they wanted in the end. The Rams have their franchise quarterback for at least one to two more seasons, while Stafford got his pay raise. We'll see if it works out for either side. How Chicago's historic orchestra hall helps NASCAR tackle a street-race problem
CHICAGO — The Symphony Center is one of Chicago's oldest structures, but the history inside isn't why NASCAR teams have descended on a building that first opened in 1904. The reason is that, when you go up to the ninth floor and walk out onto the east-facing balcony, you get a picturesque view of Millennium Park to your left, Lake Michigan straight ahead and Grant Park to your right. Advertisement From this lookout on the Symphony Center's highest floor, NASCAR teams get an important view during the Chicago race weekend. During on-track sessions for both the Cup and Xfinity Series, teams position spotters here to help their drivers navigate the temporary street circuit that encompasses 2.2 miles and 12 turns around Grant Park. 'It's definitely quite the view from up here,' said Travis Geisler, alternative spotter for Team Penske driver Joey Logano. Geisler, Penske's competition director, doesn't normally spot for Logano, only stepping into that role whenever NASCAR races on a road course. The spotter's job requires being an additional set of eyes for a driver, helping them through the potential safety and competitive facets they must navigate, while also monitoring every other driver. An already challenging role is made more difficult when NASCAR ventures away from its traditional oval tracks to road courses, like it will this weekend in downtown Chicago. For the third consecutive year, NASCAR is racing on the Windy City's streets. On circuits like Chicago, a spotter's visibility is often obscured, with several obstacles in the way and communication with their driver limited. And that's how a group of spotters find themselves atop a building that the Chicago Symphony Orchestra — regarded as one of the United States' 'Big Five' orchestras — calls home. It's an ideal place to view a section of the track. 'You are higher up, so you can see more, even though some of the braking zone into (Turn) 11 is blocked by the tree, you can at least see when somebody's setting it up and can give (a driver) a heads-up,' said Hayden Reeves, primary spotter for Legacy Motor Club driver Erik Jones, of the Symphony Center location. 'From here, you can pick them up a little sooner.' At most ovals, teams employ just a single spotter, stationed usually at the track's highest point — typically on top of the scoring tower on the frontstretch. On a road course, with a more complex layout, teams usually bring in at least two additional spotters, scattered throughout the circuit to offer guidance at areas where the main spotter cannot get a proper visual. Advertisement For Chicago, teams generally place their primary spotter on a stand along the main straightaway in the frontstretch. Additional spotters, many of whom study the vernacular of the primary spotter to make it easier for the driver to understand, are in the designated locations between Turns 3 and 4 — where they stand atop double-decker buses parked outside the circuit — and at the Symphony Center. Spotters along the straightaway are responsible for picking up the cars exiting Turn 12 and entering Turn 1, a primary passing zone, then coming into Turn 6, another passing zone. They also handle restarts, which are often frantic. Spotters on the buses handle the cars as they come down the high-speed backstretch into Turn 3, through Turn 4 and into Turn 5. Spotters at the Symphony Center pick up their driver as they exit Turn 8 and enter a quick succession of three turns, including Turn 11, a tricky 90-degree bend that has been the site of many pile-ups. 'Most of the corners are 90-degree corners and blind, and you can't see around them,' said Kaulig Racing driver AJ Allmendinger. 'And as we've seen a couple of times, you start stacking cars in there, if the spotter is slow to get to it or can't see it, we all kind of stack it in there because you just don't see the cars wrecked.' The use of multiple spotters on road courses — teams may use more than three and place them where needed — requires everyone to adjust their operations. T.J. Bell, spotter for 23XI Racing's Corey Heim, described it as a 'game of telephone' where not everyone has direct communication with everyone at all times. On an oval, a driver's lone spotter informs them of everything — choosing the right lane on a restart, if another driver is to the inside or outside of them, cautions, what's happening on pit road, or any number of other things. On road courses, however, the regular spotter is not necessarily the primary voice, as some duties are left to those with a better sightline. Advertisement The setup means the regular spotter has to accept not being able to talk to their driver as often as normal and must adapt to handing off to the alternative spotters, then remaining silent. 'Well, I'm an egomaniac. I don't like to share my job with anybody,' said Freddie Kraft, the spotter for 23XI Racing driver Bubba Wallace. 'I want to be in control of everything.' This year, track officials have relocated the primary spotter stand from above pit road to across from it, a move made due to the removal of a hospitality area that had been there for the past two years. While spotters should now have a straight-on viewpoint of pit road itself, some have expressed trepidation about whether they'll be able to clearly see cars exiting Turn 12 and entering Turn 1, or picking up their driver going into Turn 6 due to trees that line the course. Track officials responded to the concerns by adding video boards to assist. Limited visibility for spotters is not unique to Chicago, with similar concerns arising in the past few years at other tracks, including some ovals. Last month at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, a permanent road course in Mexico City where NASCAR raced for the first time in nearly 20 years, some of the initial designated spotter locations weren't ideal. Spotters had difficulty seeing cars going into Turn 1, a key section of the 2.49-mile, 15-turn course, due to the stand being too low to the ground. After consultation with NASCAR, spotters were allowed to relocate to areas they saw as a better fit, though some still said they lacked sufficient visibility. 'Spotters into Turn 1 of Mexico. Do you know where they were standing? You can't see anything,' Wallace said. 'And so if we want to talk about safety and all this stuff, either say we're not racing with spotters, or get them in a position and make sure the area is safe for them to operate in to give us the safety and the protocols that we need.' Wallace's frustration stems from how much drivers rely on spotters. That importance is magnified on some tracks, particularly a street course that offers little margin for error due to the concrete walls that closely surround the track. But because of the vast layout of the Chicago course, or nearly any road course, there are areas where spotters can't see their cars. There can also be radio issues due to interference from nearby buildings. The combination of factors leaves drivers momentarily on their own, a little blind to what's around them. Advertisement 'You just have to pick it up on the stuff that you may get relaxed on, stuff like relying on your ears a lot,' Logano said. 'When you get your spotter going and all that, you listen to him to make your decisions, and now you have to take a little bit of focus off the road and look at the mirror.' It's all part of the challenge of trying to race on a road course, both for those behind the wheel and those watching from above trying to keep a close eye on the action. 'Chicago is a tough one with a lot of blind spots,' Kraft said. 'You would probably need five or six guys to do it effectively. It's basically just a positioning thing. You see Turn 4 spotters are standing on top of a damn tour bus. Like, we got someone on Symphony (Center) on the balcony. Some guys are in hotel rooms trying to watch Turn 6.
