Opener Abhishek is at No. 1 position with 829 points and Tilak Varma is in second spot with 804 points. Both Abhisek Sharma and Tilak Varma have been named in the 15-member Team India squad for the Asia Cup 2025 tournament from next month in UAE. In fact, Abhishek's strong performances have ensured that he will be No. 1 opener for the side. Jaiswal hasn't been named in the 15-member squad for the Asia Cup 2025 but he is one of the 5 reserve players for the tournament named by BCCI selectors. South Africa's Keshav Maharaj returns to No. 1 position South Africa left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj has re-claimed his mantle as the No.1 ranked ODI bowler in the world following the latest update to the ICC Men's Player Rankings. Maharaj returns to the premier ranking spot on the back of his maiden ODI five-wicket haul against Australia in Cairns on Tuesday, with the left-armer gaining two places to climb in front of Sri Lankan spinner Maheesh Theekshana (second) and India chinaman Kuldeep Yadav (third) on the updated rankings. The 35-year-old veteran used all his experience to collect figures of 5/33 against Australia, which ensured the Proteas registered an impressive 98-run victory and helped him return to the top of the rankings pinnacle. Maharaj first held the No.1 ODI bowler ranking back in November 2023 when he displaced India seamer Mohammed Siraj during the most recent edition of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 and the spinner has maintained a place inside the top five spots on the rankings ever since. There is more joy on the rankings for South Africa, with experienced duo Aiden Markram (up four rungs to 21st) and Temba Bavuma (up five spots to 23rd) both gaining ground on the latest list for ODI batters following half-centuries in that opening game of the ongoing series with Australia. BCCI Breaks Silence On Snubbing Yashasvi Jaiswal For Asia Cup 2025: "Bowling Option..."

Yashasvi Jaiswal missed out as BCCI announced the Indian cricket team squad for Asia Cup 2025. Shubman Gill was appointed vice-captain for the competition and according to chief selector Ajit Agarkar, he will be the third opener along with Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. As a result, Jaiswal was not included in the main squad but did find a spot in the reserves list. Agarkar revealed that it was unfortunate that Jaiswal did not find a place and highlighted the bowling option that Abhishek provides to the team. 'It's unfortunate. What Abhishek has done over the last year or so, plus giving us a bowling option, is required. One of these guys was always going to miss out," Agarkar said during the press conference. Gill's last T20 match was against Sri Lanka at Pallekele in 2024 and he has now replaced Axar Patel as the deputy of skipper Suryakumar Yadav. The Asia Cup gets underway on September 9 in the UAE. "Gill's form in England was something we expected but he exceeded it all," chief selector Ajit Agarkar said during the squad announcement press conference here. There were some lingering doubts on Bumrah's availability largely due to the tournament's proximity to the home Test series against the West Indies in October. But the selectors opted to pick him nevertheless and this will be Bumrah's first T20 tournament since last year's World Cup. Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav too has been drafted in, while Jitesh Sharma will be the back-up wicketkeeper batter. Another prominent name missing in the squad was Shreyas Iyer, who showed tremendous form while guiding Punjab Kings to the IPL final earlier this year. Agarkar blamed it on the abundance of T20 talent that makes it difficult to accommodate him. "We have got some serious options in T20 not the easiest squad to pick but good headache to have," Agarkar said. India is placed in Group A of the Asia Cup alongside Pakistan, Oman, and the UAE. India squad for Asia Cup: Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Shubman Gill (vice-captain), Abhishek Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Jitesh Sharma, Shivam Dube, Arshdeep Singh, Sanju Samson, Harshit Rana, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav.

Gill wasn't Agarkar's first choice for Asia Cup vice-captain, but Gambhir reportedly swung it his way: Is this a risky move?

The BCCI has named Shubman Gill as India's T20I vice-captain for the Asia Cup 2025, replacing Axar Patel, and head coach Gautam Gambhir was instrumental in this decision. But is it the right decision? The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors created a heated debate in the Indian cricketing circles with their bold move of not only bringing Shubman Gill back into the T20I squad for the Asia Cup 2025, the 25-year-old has also been made the vice-captain, replacing Axar Patel. Indian Test team captain Gill is now breathing down T20 skipper Suryakumar Yadav's neck, and if he continues his meteoric rise, it would only be a matter of time before he replaces SKY at the helm in the shortest format. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD However, what's interesting here is that Gill wasn't the first choice of the Indian cricket team selection panel led by Ajit Agarkar. Reportedly, the selectors had other names in mind for the vice-captain slot, including that of incumbent Axar Patel. Gambhir helps Gill become India T20 vice-captain As per a report in the Indian Express, the selection meeting at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on Tuesday spent most of its time on whether Gill should be picked and made the vice-captain. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, who joined the meeting through an online medium, played a big role in swinging the verdict in Gill's favour. 'It was the matter that consumed most of the time at Tuesday's selection meeting and head coach Gautam Gambhir, who joined online, was also of the view that India needs to groom someone for the future and Gill, who turns 26 next month, was the most eligible candidate,' the Indian Express report said. 'Gill wasn't the first choice initially and some people felt that Axar Patel should continue the role of vice-captaincy. But the overall mood at the selection meeting was that it's better to invest in a player who is likely to serve Indian cricket for long.' Also Read | Shubman Gill's T20I elevation lays bare BCCI's long-term vision as India cricket seek next superstar After the selection panel couldn't find any better alternative, it decided to pick Gill, the report added. 'The panel couldn't find any other candidate whom they can hand over responsibility for the next five years. As Gill is already leading in Test cricket, the selectors felt it was a right time to prepare him to take over from Surya some time in the future.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD What other options BCCI had? While it's true that Gill showcased incredible leadership skills in the five-match Test series in England, helping India secure a 2-2 draw despite the recent retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, it's also true that Axar Patel has consistently done well for India in the T20Is, especially since 2023. Also, the BCCI selectors had the option of bringing in Shreyas Iyer, who was India's highest run-getter in the victorious Champions Trophy 2025 campaign and also helped Punjab Kings reach the final of the Indian Premier League (2025). Iyer also won the IPL last year with the Kolkata Knight Riders. Yashasvi Jaiswal could also have been an option. Jaiswal was part of the T20 World Cup-winning squad in 2024 and has much better figures than Jaiswal in the T20Is. By picking Gill as T20I vice-captain, the selectors have indicated that he could be the next all-format captain, but it's also a risky proposition to put all your eggs in one basket in a highly competitive cricket era where the scheduling is becoming extremely dense.
