Allegan County: Damage from storms is $2.2 million
ALLEGAN, Mich. (WOOD) — Allegan County's emergency management agency says its preliminary assessment has estimated some $2.2 million in damage caused by the severe storm that spawned two tornadoes in the county last week. NWS confirms 2 tornadoes in Allegan County on Thursday The county's Emergency Operations Center put together the preliminary assessment to submit to the office of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who may decide whether to issue a state emergency or disaster declaration. If issued, a state or federal disaster declaration would open up access to resources for recovery. The county already declared a local state of emergency. The EOC says it found $440,000 in direct expenses and damage to local government property that fall under Michigan State Police administrative rules for possible reimbursement. Allegan County community reacts to state of emergency The National Weather Service has confirmed two EF1 tornadoes touched down in Allegan County on the night of May 15. One was in the Martin area and the other was near the Sandy Pines campground. As of Wednesday, the EOC said it was not aware of any federal financial assistance for businesses or residents with property damage. It advised people to contact their insurance company. Additional resources may be available by calling 211 or through the American Red Cross, which is reachable at (733.27677). The tornado that marched through Martin sent trees crashing down, damaged some homes and knocked out power for days. 'Trees across the road,' street commissioner Rick Martin said. 'You couldn't go in or out of Martin at 11 p.m., 12 p.m.' He estimated cleanup costs at $250,000 — but said it will end up being less than that because neighbors, people who grew up there, friends and family have stepped up. Neighbor David Cheeseman said he saw it firsthand. 'In the middle of the night, neighbors were out helping clean things up,' Cheeseman said. 'The whole town's been that way. I've always liked it here, but now I love it.' Cheeseman planted a tree before he even closed on his Martin home 20 years ago. It has grown taller and taller as the years have passed and as he built a life there. Now, that special tree will soon come down after it was rocked by the tornado. 'It was 30 feet tall until Thursday night,' he said. Cheeseman said the governor declaring a disaster and offering access to more resources for recovery could be helpful. 'There are people that are going to need help for sure,' he said. While the street commissioner also said the extra help would be beneficial, he again praised his community. 'Any help that comes along, we're not going to turn it down by any means,' he said. 'But the community here has cleaned it up. You talk to anybody, it's family. It's just the way it is.' Crews are trying to finish cleanup before Monday's annual Memorial Day parade through Martin, which includes veterans, the high school band and tractors. It's a priority for the village to keep the parade on. 'It's a goal of the (department of public works), the village of Martin to have this to make sure life goes on,' the street commissioner said. Romanian pleads guilty to swatting calls targeting former US president, lawmakers
A Romanian citizen pleaded guilty on Monday to leading a years-long conspiracy targeting dozens of individuals — including members of Congress, places of worship, and a former United States president — with 'swatting' calls and bomb threats intended to provoke fear and solicit a police response. Thomasz Szabo, 26, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson in Washington, D.C., to one count of conspiracy and one count of threats and false information regarding explosives. The sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 23. Federal prosecutors say Szabo was the leader of an online community that engaged in bomb threats and 'swatting' — a term that refers to making false reports of an ongoing threat of violence — since late 2020. He was extradited from Romania in November 2024, the DOJ said. 'This defendant led a dangerous swatting criminal conspiracy, deliberately threatening dozens of government officials with violent hoaxes and targeting our nation's security infrastructure from behind a screen overseas,' Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement. 'This case reflects our continued focus on protecting the American people and working with international partners to stop these threats at their source,' she continued. Szabo made numerous false reports to law enforcement, including in December 2020, when he threatened to commit a mass shooting at New York City synagogues and, in January 2021, when he threatened to detonate explosives at the U.S. Capitol and to kill then-President-elect Biden, according to a DOJ press release. Members of Szabo's group then engaged in a 'spree of swatting and bomb threats' from Dec. 24, 2023, to early January 2024, the DOJ said. During that time, the group targeted at least 25 members of Congress or their family members; at least six officials who were, either then or previously, serving as a senior Executive Branch official, including multiple Cabinet-level officials; at least 13 senior federal law enforcement officials; and various members of the judiciary, according to the DOJ. The DOJ said the group also targeted at least 27 officials who were serving at the time, or who previously served, as state government officials or their family members; four religious institutions; and multiple members of the media. In recent years, political violence and 'swatting' incidents have been on the rise, in particular targeting members of Congress and other high-profile public figures. Local Georgia news outlets reported that among the officials targeted by Szabo are Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and Georgia State Sen. Clint Dixon. DNC taco truck stunt trolling Trump backfires on social media with Vance, GOP: 'Can't fix stupid'
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) parked a custom-wrapped food truck in front of the Republican National Committee headquarters in Washington, D.C., in an effort to troll President Trump over his tariff policies. The stunt received widespread mockery from conservatives. The DNC used the acronym TACO for "Trump Always Chickens Out" to provoke Trump's ire. The phrase was coined by Wall Street analysts when referring to Trump's tariff policies, suggesting Trump will walk back the steep reciprocal tariffs he announced in April. Treasury Secretary Confronts Cbs Host Over Past Tariff Inflation Predictions As Rates Hit 4-Year-low "Trump always chickens out. We're just bringing the tacos to match," DNC Chair Ken Martin told Fox News Digital of the effort. The move did not impress conservatives on social media who highlighted it as an example of Democrats struggling with their messaging during Trump's presidency. Read On The Fox News App "The party that brought you the hugely successful 'Dark Brandon' and 'Republicans are Weird' campaigns are now going all in on 'TACO,'" Washington Free Beacon reporter Chuck Ross posted on X. "We have the lamest opposition in American history," Vice President JD Vance posted on X. "Democrats are doing what they do best: cheap gimmicks, free handouts, and I wouldn't be surprised if they stuck us with the bill," Western Regional & National Hispanic press secretary Christian Martinez posted on X. Trump Warns Court Ruling Against Tariffs Could Lead To 'Economic Ruination' Of Us In a statement to Fox News Digital, NRCC spokesman Mike Marinella mocked the DNC for parking the truck at a church a block away. "Looks like the Democrats took a break from fighting amongst themselves to stage a pathetic stunt," Marinella said. The most embarrassing part? They couldn't even get the location right. You can't fix stupid." "LMFAO," Zach Parkinson, RNC communications director, told Fox News Digital. "A taco truck? Are they going to be giving out free vasectomies again, too? These people are morons. No wonder Democrats' approval rating is at a historic low." Abhi Rahman, the DNC's deputy communications director, took aim at Vance's X post, telling Fox News Digital Democrats know Vance is the "cringiest VP in American history." "We understand that JD Vance, the cringiest VP in American history who cannot order a donut like a normal human being, prefers to take food away from people, including 40 million Americans whose SNAP benefits were just scrapped in the GOP budget," he said. Earlier this week, conservative commentators took aim at a TikTok posted by Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., in which he is filmed eating a taco in an attempt to mock Trump's tariff strategy, and some declared it "cringeworthy."
