Cong: Decision to impose Emergency in 1975 constitutional, undeclared Emergency now

Indian Express5 hours ago

Maharashtra Congress chief Harshavardhan Sapkal on Wednesday termed the decision to impose the Emergency in 1975 'constitutional' and targeted the ruling BJP, claiming that there is an 'undeclared Emergency' in the country for the past 11 years.
Sapkal's remarks came on a day which marked 50 years of the Emergency Proclamation, as part of which the BJP held programmes and press conferences across the country targeting the Congress.
The state Congress president questioned whether the stand of former RSS chief Balasaheb Deoras, who supported the Emergency, is now unacceptable to BJP.
'The decision to impose Emergency in 1975 by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was constitutional. Certain forces were attempting to create chaos in the country. Later, the Emergency was lifted, elections were held, and democratic processes were restored,' Sapkal said.
'During the Emergency, Indira Gandhi didn't sell the country's assets or hand over public sector enterprises to industrialists. But for the past 11 years, there has been an undeclared Emergency in the country. Airports, ports, mines, banks, and government lands are being sold off to favoured industrialists. Even Dharavi's land has been sold. Today, dictatorship prevails, and the BJP's insatiable hunger for power is threatening democracy,' the Congress leader alleged.
Sapkal questioned how Sengol can replace the national emblem in government advertisements.
'The BJP government has splurged crores on advertisements around the Emergency. In these government ads, the national emblem is missing, replaced by the Sengol. The BJP wants to dismantle democracy and the Constitution and implement Golwalkar's 'Bunch of Thoughts',' alleged Sapkal.
Maharashtra Congress's official publication Janmanasachi Shidori released a special Emergency edition — featuring articles by Indira Gandhi, Pupul Jayakar, senior journalist and former RS MP Kumar Ketkar, Sena UBT MP Sanjay Raut, among others — to counter the 'BJP's false narrative' about the Emergency, Sapkal said.

Emergency's 50th anniversary sparks political face-off in Raj

1 2 Jaipur/Jhunjhunu/Jodhpur: The 50th anniversary of the Emergency sparked intense political debates across Rajasthan, with ruling BJP and opposition Congress trading sharp accusations over the historical event and ongoing development projects Wednesday. Chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, addressing the Democracy Fighter Honour Ceremony at Maheshwari Public School in Jaipur, termed the Emergency a "dark stain on our democratic history." Sharma accused the Congress of harming national interests through "appeasement, nepotism and corrupt politics in its lust for power." Deputy chief minister Diya Kumari, speaking at BJP's 'Sacrifice Day' event in Sikar, shared a personal connection to the period, revealing that her father, late Brig Bhawani Singh, a Mahavir Chakra awardee, was imprisoned during the Emergency. Former CM Ashok Gehlot, however, defended the Emergency, stating it "was the need of the time." Speaking in Jodhpur, Gehlot reminded that Congress had faced consequences of imposing Emergency but subsequently won the general elections with a significant majority under Indira Gandhi's leadership. Gehlot dismissed BJP's attempts to leverage the Emergency issue for political gain. PCC chief Govind Singh Dotasra added another dimension to the debate, claiming that RSS man Balasaheb had actually supported the Emergency, and pointed out that Kumari's father had contested Lok Sabha elections on a Congress ticket. The political discourse extended beyond the Emergency, with Dotasra alleging an "undeclared emergency" under the current Modi govt. He also questioned the BJP govt's progress on various infrastructure projects, including the Fatehpur Road bypass and Nawalgarh Road railway bridge. On the other hand, Deputy CM Kumari highlighted developments in Jhunjhunu, including the Shekhawati Havelis, Khatu Shyamji Corridor and Jhunjhunu War Museum projects, with the central govt allocating Rs 87 crore for the Khatu Shyamji project. Congress, however, accused the BJP of taking credit for initiatives started during their previous tenure at the govt. The day saw multiple events across the state, including a seminar titled "The Dark Chapter of Indian Democracy - Constitution Murder Day - 2025" at the Constitution Club, marking five decades since the Emergency's imposition.

Kochi: Political leaders, who were jailed during the Emergency of 1975-77 under MISA and DIR laws, gathered at the residence of CPM leader K N Ravindranath at Edappally, where they recalled their life in prison, on Wednesday. The dark shadow from half-a-century ago still haunted them. Participants of the meeting, organised by Thampan Thomas Foundation, included Ravindranath, Thampan Thomas, M K Kannan, M T Kurian, K A Ali Akbar, K P Job and John Joseph. They recounted being taken away by the police at night, the tortures in jail and the brutal beatings they endured. They unanimously voiced the need for a public uprising against the undeclared state of emergency prevailing in India today. Ravindranath recalled that he was arrested two months after Emergency was declared, as his wife Indira and son Madhu listened intently. There is a need for a major public uprising to confront the emerging climate of terror similar to the Emergency period, he said. Thomas said he received a promise of becoming a high court judge before he was arrested at night, with police surrounding his house. BJP instigating conflicts, engaging in negative politics: Akhilesh

Kanpur: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday again condemned the tonsuring of a non-Brahmin Katha Vachak in Etawah by a group of men after finding out their caste. He said PDA scholars are being stopped from narrating spiritual stories. Speaking to reporters in Farrukhabad, he said such Dalit persecution would cease when SP will form govt. The SP chief claimed that oppression of backward classes, Dalits, and minorities has reached unprecedented peak under the BJP govt. He accused the BJP of instigating conflicts along religious and caste lines and engaging in negative politics. Yadav was in Farrukhabad to attend the 13th day rituals of late Samajwadi Party leader and former MP Chhote Singh Yadav. He said BJP govt in Uttar Pradesh is laying the groundwork for an "old emergency," asserting that an "undeclared emergency" is currently in effect across the country. He alleged that "discrimination based on caste and religion is rampant under the BJP's rule, and that inflation and corruption have reached their peak." Drawing a parallel to the Emergency that followed Jaiprakash Narayan's anti-corruption movement, he said, "At that time, there was a declared Emergency, but the BJP govt has imposed an undeclared Emergency this time."
