Cong: Decision to impose Emergency in 1975 constitutional, undeclared Emergency now

Maharashtra Congress chief Harshavardhan Sapkal on Wednesday termed the decision to impose the Emergency in 1975 'constitutional' and targeted the ruling BJP, claiming that there is an 'undeclared Emergency' in the country for the past 11 years. Sapkal's remarks came on a day which marked 50 years of the Emergency Proclamation, as part of which the BJP held programmes and press conferences across the country targeting the Congress. The state Congress president questioned whether the stand of former RSS chief Balasaheb Deoras, who supported the Emergency, is now unacceptable to BJP. 'The decision to impose Emergency in 1975 by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was constitutional. Certain forces were attempting to create chaos in the country. Later, the Emergency was lifted, elections were held, and democratic processes were restored,' Sapkal said. 'During the Emergency, Indira Gandhi didn't sell the country's assets or hand over public sector enterprises to industrialists. But for the past 11 years, there has been an undeclared Emergency in the country. Airports, ports, mines, banks, and government lands are being sold off to favoured industrialists. Even Dharavi's land has been sold. Today, dictatorship prevails, and the BJP's insatiable hunger for power is threatening democracy,' the Congress leader alleged. Sapkal questioned how Sengol can replace the national emblem in government advertisements. 'The BJP government has splurged crores on advertisements around the Emergency. In these government ads, the national emblem is missing, replaced by the Sengol. The BJP wants to dismantle democracy and the Constitution and implement Golwalkar's 'Bunch of Thoughts',' alleged Sapkal. Maharashtra Congress's official publication Janmanasachi Shidori released a special Emergency edition — featuring articles by Indira Gandhi, Pupul Jayakar, senior journalist and former RS MP Kumar Ketkar, Sena UBT MP Sanjay Raut, among others — to counter the 'BJP's false narrative' about the Emergency, Sapkal said.

"Congress never respects the law": Madhya Pradesh CM on 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas'

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) [India], June 25 (ANI): On the 50th anniversary of the imposition of Emergency in India, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Wednesday accused the Congress party of undermining democracy and disrespecting the Constitution for its political gains. Speaking to ANI, Chief Minister Yadav said, 'On this day in 1975, Indira Gandhi ji imposed the Emergency after she had lost elections. For its selfish interests, Congress never respects the law and the Constitution.' He further accused the Congress of hypocrisy, stating that while the party today claims allegiance to Dr BR Ambedkar's legacy, it had historically sidelined and insulted him. 'Today, they are shedding crocodile tears for Dr BR Ambedkar. It would be better if they remembered how they insulted Dr BR Ambedkar and never let him win an election,' he said. The Chief Minister added that the Congress should apologise for what he termed its 'past sins,' referring to the 21-month Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on June 25, 1975. The Central government has decided to mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency as 'Samvidhan Hatya Divas'. On 25 June 1975, then President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed issued the Emergency Proclamation under Article 352, citing threats from internal disturbance. The Emergency was declared against a backdrop of mounting political unrest and judicial developments that shook the legitimacy of the ruling leadership. Meanwhile, observing the 50th anniversary of the Emergency in India, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar recalled participating in the Jayprakash Narayan Movement, opposing the Emergency. Sharing a social media post, Nitish Kumar said June 25, 1975 marked a 'dark day' in the history of independent India and that the Emergency represented a symbol of dictatorship. 'June 25, 1975, is a day we all remember, when the Emergency was imposed in the country. It is called the dark day in the history of independent India. The Emergency of 1975 was a symbol of the dictatorship of the then government. During the Emergency, restrictions were placed on the freedom of expression of the people,' CM Nitish wrote on X. (ANI)

New Delhi [India], June 25 (ANI): Claiming India has been going through an 'undeclared emergency' for the past 11 years, Congress leader Manickam Tagore on Wednesday launched a blistering attack on the Bharatiya Janta Party, accusing it of trying to destroy Dr BR Ambedkar's legacy by attacking the Constitution. 'The Constitution is under attack. In 2024, Modi asked for a Char Sau Paar mandate to change the Constitution. He wanted to destroy Ambedkar's legacy - and the people rejected him. But the BJP continues to undermine democracy by stealth,' Tagore wrote in a post on X. Criticising the functioning of the parliament, he highlighted the suspension of 146 MPs in 2023, a record number of suspensions which occurred during the Parliament winter session, claiming that the 'temple of democracy' has become a 'dictatorship theatre.' 'Parliament has been reduced to a farce; 146 MPs suspended in one session - a world record; Laws passed in 5 minutes; Zero accountability; Budget presented without debate; India's temple of democracy has become a dictatorship's theatre,' the post claimed. These remarks come as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) observes the 50th anniversary of the Emergency imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, as the 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas'. The Congress leader recalled the various incidents he claims to be attacks on democracy and sabotage of various institutions. '11 years and 30 days of Modi's rule. We're not in a democracy anymore - we're in an Undeclared Emergency. A 5-front war has been waged against India's soul. This isn't governance. It's systemic sabotage,' his post alleged. The party leader also decried the attack on the judiciary, saying that judges are being punished for independence while others who tow the line are rewarded. Similarly, on the alleged capture of institutions, the party leader blamed the Election Commission for helping the BJP, and Governors being used to sabotage opposition ruled states. 'This is not about Modi vs Congress. This is about Democracy vs Dictatorship. This is about Ambedkar vs Sangh. This is about India vs Emergency. We will resist. We will fight. We will reclaim the Constitution,' his post read. Earlier in the day, Jairam Ramesh, the party's general Secretary (Communications) also criticised the BJP for attacking democracy in the last 11 years, highlighting the deteriorating centre and state relations, attack on Parliamentary norms, capture of institutions and more. India was placed under a state of Emergency from June 25, 1975, to March 21 1977, following the implementation of Article 352 of the constitution. (ANI)

Patna (Bihar) [India], June 25 (ANI): Observing the 50th anniversary of the Emergency in India, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar remembered participating in the Jayprakash Narayan Movement, opposing the Emergency. Sharing a social media post, CM Nitish Kumar called June 25, 1975, a 'dark day' in the history of independent India and wrote that the Emergency was a symbol of dictatorship. 'June 25, 1975, is a day we all remember, when the Emergency was imposed in the country. It is called the dark day in the history of independent India. Remembering Jayaprakash Narayan and his movement against the Emergency, Nitish Kumar said that he too participated and was imprisoned along with his colleagues. 'Against the Emergency, Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan ji started a movement. I, too, participated in this movement along with many of my colleagues and actively opposed the Emergency. All of us colleagues were imprisoned for raising our voices against dictatorship. However, the people of the country demonstrated unity and courage. Together, we fought the battle,' the X post read. CM Nitish added, 'All of you know that the voice of the people lies at the core of democracy. It is our responsibility to protect it in every situation. Bihar has always made the spirit of the Constitution, justice, freedom, and social justice the path of its development.
