New Delhi [India], June 25 (ANI): Claiming India has been going through an 'undeclared emergency' for the past 11 years, Congress leader Manickam Tagore on Wednesday launched a blistering attack on the Bharatiya Janta Party, accusing it of trying to destroy Dr BR Ambedkar's legacy by attacking the Constitution.
'The Constitution is under attack. In 2024, Modi asked for a Char Sau Paar mandate to change the Constitution. He wanted to destroy Ambedkar's legacy - and the people rejected him. But the BJP continues to undermine democracy by stealth,' Tagore wrote in a post on X.

Criticising the functioning of the parliament, he highlighted the suspension of 146 MPs in 2023, a record number of suspensions which occurred during the Parliament winter session, claiming that the 'temple of democracy' has become a 'dictatorship theatre.'
'Parliament has been reduced to a farce; 146 MPs suspended in one session - a world record; Laws passed in 5 minutes; Zero accountability; Budget presented without debate; India's temple of democracy has become a dictatorship's theatre,' the post claimed.
These remarks come as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) observes the 50th anniversary of the Emergency imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, as the 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas'. The Congress leader recalled the various incidents he claims to be attacks on democracy and sabotage of various institutions.
'11 years and 30 days of Modi's rule. We're not in a democracy anymore - we're in an Undeclared Emergency. A 5-front war has been waged against India's soul. This isn't governance. It's systemic sabotage,' his post alleged.
The party leader also decried the attack on the judiciary, saying that judges are being punished for independence while others who tow the line are rewarded. Similarly, on the alleged capture of institutions, the party leader blamed the Election Commission for helping the BJP, and Governors being used to sabotage opposition ruled states.
'This is not about Modi vs Congress. This is about Democracy vs Dictatorship. This is about Ambedkar vs Sangh. This is about India vs Emergency. We will resist. We will fight. We will reclaim the Constitution,' his post read.
Earlier in the day, Jairam Ramesh, the party's general Secretary (Communications) also criticised the BJP for attacking democracy in the last 11 years, highlighting the deteriorating centre and state relations, attack on Parliamentary norms, capture of institutions and more.
India was placed under a state of Emergency from June 25, 1975, to March 21 1977, following the implementation of Article 352 of the constitution. On 25 June 1975, then President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed issued the Emergency Proclamation under Article 352, citing threats from internal disturbance. The Emergency was declared against a backdrop of mounting political unrest and judicial developments that shook the legitimacy of the ruling leadership. (ANI)

21-month Emergency unleashed era of anarchism in India: Tripura CM Manik Saha
Agartala: The 21-month Emergency period unleashed an era of anarchism in India, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said while addressing the 'Mock Parliament on the Dark Days of Emergency'. The Chief Minister said that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, after imposing the Emergency on June 25, 1975, totally curbed the voice of the people till March 21, 1977, when the black days of emergency were withdrawn. Saha, former President of the BJP's Tripura unit, said that after declaring the Emergency, many important opposition leaders were put behind the jail and there was no democracy at that time. 'Not only had the opposition leaders, leaders of her own party (Congress) who raised any issues, been imprisoned under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during the Emergency period. Many Editors and Journalists were also arrested for making comments about the Emergency,' he pointed out and adding 'we hope that never such an undemocratic and dark period returns again'. After Narendra Modi became Prime Minister, protection of democracy was further strengthened with the values of the Indian constitution upheld, Saha said. He informed that the 'Mock Parliament on the Dark Days of Emergency' is being held at more than 100 places in the country. The BJP, as part of the party's nationwide programme on Wednesday, observed 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas (Murder of Constitution Day) across Tripura, recalling the horror of the Emergency promulgated by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, with seminars, discussions, and public awareness series. In the state-level programme at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) organised a mock Parliament debate on Indian democracy among the party's youths. The Chief Minister highlighting the various facets of the 'dark phase of Emergency', said that the Emergency, which lasted for 21 months from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977, was imposed under Article 352 of the Constitution, had made the citizens' lives terrible and all kinds of democratic activities were entirely curtailed. Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi forced then President (Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed) to declare the Emergency, he said. During the period of Emergency, citizens' basic rights were suspended, media freedom was curbed through heavy censorship, and the independence of the judiciary was severely undermined, he reminded. 'We condemned those days of Congress in the 50th year of the beginning of the Emergency and tried to educate younger generations about those black days,' Saha said. State BJP President Rajib Bhattacharjee and other leaders also spoke at the event.

Security Forces Foiled Coup Plot Involving Senior Cleric, Says Armenia PM
Armenia's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Wednesday said security forces had foiled a coup plot involving a senior cleric, amid his escalating standoff with the leadership of Armenia's Apostolic Church. Nikol Pashinyan has been at loggerheads with senior clerics since 2020, when Catholicos Garegin II began calling for his resignation following Armenia's disastrous military defeat to arch-foe Azerbaijan over the then-disputed Karabakh region. "Law enforcement officers have foiled a large-scale and sinister plan by the 'criminal-oligarchic clergy' to destabilise the situation in the Republic of Armenia and seize power," he wrote on his Telegram channel. He shared a statement by Armenia's investigative committee which claimed that Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan had "since November 2024 set himself the goal of changing power by means not permitted by the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia." Galstanyan -- the leader of opposition Sacred Struggle movement -- last year accused Pashinyan of ceding territory to Azerbaijan and led mass protests that ultimately failed to topple the prime minister. The investigative committee said that Galstanyan "with the prior consent of several members of the movement, acquired the necessary means and tools to carry out terrorist acts and seize power." "Searches are currently underway at the homes of Archbishop Bagrat and around 30 of his associates," it added. A close associate of the archbishop, MP Garnik Danielyan, told journalists that "these are actions of a dictatorial regime," and called the accusations against the cleric fabricated. The loss of Karabakh after Azerbaijan's lightning offensive in 2023 has divided Armenia, as its neighbour demands sweeping concessions in exchange for lasting peace. Earlier this month, Pashinyan launched an unprecedented challenge to Garegin II, urging believers to remove him from office. He has alleged that the Catholicos has a child in a blazing row that prompted fierce opposition criticism and calls for Pashinyan to be excommunicated. Armenia -- the first nation to adopt Christianity as a state religion in the 4th century -- grants the Armenian Apostolic Church special constitutional status and the church wields considerable influence in Armenian society.
